Summary Research during the last two decades has clearly pointed out that dramatic ecosystem changes have occured in lakes due to deposition of acid substances and decreased pH. Today a large number of lakes and running waters in Scandinavia are suffering biological damage with disappearing fish populations, overgrowth of the bottom by mosses and filamentous algae, reduced invertebrate fauna, increased transparency etc.—Of all documented biological changes the effect on macrophyte succession, in particular that ofSphagnum, is the most striking effect. Along with the growth of filamentous algae, these changes have brought about major shifts in the composition of the primary producers. The biomass in one lake was estimated to be 6.5 t (dry wt) corresponding to about 24 g m–2, the relevant proportions being 52% forSphagnum, 34% forLobelia and 15% forIsoetes. Percentage production in the whole lake is 54% forSphagnum, 29% forLobelia and 17% forIsoetes, which gives an estimated production of 2.9 t yr–1 or 9 g m–2 yr–1.Sphagnum is a recent flora element and its occurrence is related to the acidification of the lakes. The investigations also show that the growth ofLobelia is reduced in acid lakes compared to other oligotrophic lakes due to shading by the benthic mat of filamentous algae, detritus andSphagnum debris.—One can conclude that there are several quantitative and qualitative changes in the macrophyte community which are related to acidification. One can also conclude that liming of lakes cause elimination ofSphagnum and some increase in the production ofIsoetids.  相似文献

Summary Species of the unicellular algaDunaliella possess outstanding tolerance of a wide range of salinities. They can adapt to grow in salt media which range from less than 0.5 M to saturated salt solutions and withstand enormous osmotic shocks through a unique osmotic adaptation. The osmoregulating mechanism depends on photosynthetic production of glycerol, whose intracellular concentration varies in direct proportion to the extracellular salt concentration and reaches values in excess of 50% of the total dry weight of the cells.Dunaliella, and another halotolerant glycerol producing alga,Asteromonas gracilis, osmoregulate biochemically by controlling glycerol biosynthesis and degradation. 3 new enzymes, NADPH-dihydroxyacetone-reductase, dihydroxyacetone kinase and glycerol-1-phosphatase seem to be involved in the osmoregulatory response via glycerol inDunaliella andAsteromonas. A hypothetical scheme of glycerol metabolism in these algae utilizing these enzymes is presented. Growth studies ofDunaliella indoors and outdoors showed that salt concentrations favoring maximal glycerol productivity are not identical with those required for maximal algal productivity. Maximal yield of glycerol occurred around 2 M NaCl while maximal algal productivity occurred below 0.5 M NaCl. Observed yields of glycerol inDunaliella culture outdoors are compared with theoretically calculated maximal yield.  相似文献

Diurnal shedding by retinal rods was studied in wild cutthroat trout,Oncorhyncus clarki, hatchery rainbow trout,Oncorhyncus mykiss, and the plains killifish,Fundulus zebrinus, by counting the shed tips of rod outer segments ingested as phagosomes by pigment epithelial cells. After sunrise, phagosomes increased in all species, but fewer occurred in trout, and these were elevated from 3 to 9 hours after sunrise. Shedding occurred earlier in the light period and was more robust in killifish, with phagosomes elevated from 1.5 to 6 hours after sunset. The data suggest that both production of phagosomes by shedding and their subsequent disposal are slower at the lower temperatures experienced by trout. Otherwise, rod shedding produced under natural lighting is not appreciably different than that provoked by sudden onset of artificial light.  相似文献

Summary The content of isoxanthopterine in different developmental stages and different genotypes ofDrosophila melanogaster has been investigated. In male pupae of the red eyed wild type the isoxanthopterine reaches a high concentration which is maintained during the whole period of imaginal life. It could be shown that the mutantsw (white) andbw (brown) though they are unable to synthesize the red eye pigment do nonetheless accumulate considerable quantities of isoxanthopterine during metamorphosis. This isoxanthopterine, however, disappears gradually from the body ofw andbw during the first 3 days of imaginal life till nothing of it is left in adult flies. The transitory appearance of isoxanthopterine in the two mutants, sets new problems with regard to the pleiotropic effect of thew- andbw-loci in pigment synthesis.  相似文献

Summary The insect anti-juvenile hormones precocene I and II (7-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran and 6,7-dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran) were identified in three of nineNama (Hydrophyllaceae) species. Precocene I occurred inN. lobbii while precocene II occurred inN. hispidum, N. lobbii andN. sandwicense. N. hispidum contained the highest concentration (ca 0.5% dry weight) of precocene II, which was found in the leaves, stems, seed capsules, corolla, glandular trichomes, and seeds. In addition to the anti-juvenile hormone, insect juvenile hormone activity was detected in the organosoluble extracts ofN. rothrockii andN. sandwicense. N. sandwicense is the first plant discovered to contain compounds with both anti- and juvenile hormone activity.  相似文献

Summary Mature larvae, one day and three days old pupae, one day and ten days old adultDrosophila melanogaster males were assayedin vitro for the enzyme, xanthinedehydrogenase. Very high enzyme activity was found in wildtype and bothw andbw throughout the period investigated. Also 6 days oldwhite flies proved to be able to form isoxanthopterin from 2-amino-4-oxypteridine in anin vivo assay. The results are discussed with regard to the absence of isoxanthopterin and uric acid inwhite andbrown imagines.

Summary Serial transfer of mycelial macerates of a wild type, haploid, aflatoxigenic strain ofAspergillus parasiticus in a defined liquid medium resulted in the production of three new morphological classes: a sclerotial form with high aflatoxin production, and two variant forms (fan andfluff) with lowered sporulation, no sclerotia, and attenuated levels of aflatoxin. A genetically marked diploid containing mutant markers for aflatoxin pathway intermediates yielded the same three morphological classes upon serial transfer of macerated mycelia. When these diploid variants were treated with a haploidization agent, and the phenotypes of the resultant segregants scored, a low frequency of colonies producing aflatoxin pathway intermediates was recovered. These genetic data indicate that the structural genes for the aflatoxin pathway are present but somehow attenuated in thefan andfluff strains.This work was supported by a Cooperative Agreement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, (58-7B30-3-556).  相似文献

The origin of the brown frogs with 2n=24 chromosomes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Late replication and C-banding analyses of somatic metaphase chromosomes were attempted on three species of brown frogs with 2n=26 chromosomes (Rana japonica, R. tsushimensis andR. temporaria), and three with 2n=24 chromosomes (R. ornativentris, R. dybowskii andR. chensinensis), which are distributed in the Palearctic region. The late replication banding patterns were highly conserved in these species. Four chromosome inversions were demonstrated inR. ornativentris, two inR. dybowskii and two inR. tsushimensis. From a detailed comparison of late replication and C-banding patterns between the 2n=26 and the 2n=24 species, it was found that an end-to-end fusion of two small chromosomes (nos 11 and 13) in an ancestral 2n=26 species may have produced the medium-sized no. 6 chromosome of the 2n=24 species.  相似文献

Summary The air stores carried by a number of aquatic insects have: a) a hydrostatic function (Brocher, Oortwijn-Botjes, Thorpe, andCrisp); b) the function of an oxygen store (Ege, de Ruiter et al.) and c) the function of a physical gill (Strauss-Durckheim, Ege, etc.). The fact that oxygen is taken up from water with the aid of an air bubble was demonstrated forNotonecta by comparing the life time of insects with and without physical gill (while replenishing the oxygen store from the air was prevented) byEge, and forCorixa byPopham, whileVlasblom determined the oxygen uptake from water with and without air bubble forNotonecta, Naucoris, Corixa, Sigara andNepa. Nepa andSigara can take up considerable quantities of oxygen by cutaneous respiration.During the summer, the gill function of the air store ofNotonecta andNaucoris is of importance only when a water current passes along the animal, caused by ventilation movements of the legs (de Ruiter et al.). At low temperatures, however, the metabolic rate is so low that in many instances the physical gill provides the oxygen required without ventilation movements.An apparatus for the simultaneous determination of oxygen uptake from air and water (Wolvekamp andVlasblom) gave results that provided a means of evaluating the importance of the physical gill function.In some cases, the air store, although in direct contact with the water, does not need to be replenished. InAphelocheirus andElmis, the negative pressure in the bubble, caused by oxygen consumption and the diffusing out of part of the nitrogen, is compensated for by the mechanical resistance of a feltwork of thin hairs and the surface tension of the boundary layer of the water (Thorpe andCrisp). In the African beetle,Potamodytes, the unprotected air bubble is permanent because the strong river currents produce a lowered pressure around the animal according toBernoulli's principle (Stride).  相似文献

Summary Laccase production was higher in malt extract medium than in lignin, andPolyporus sanguineus appears to be better thanPolyporus versicolor andTrametes hirsuta (syn.Polyporus hirsutus) for enzyme production. Phenolic compounds, of which resorcinol was the most active, induced enzyme production; while sugars repressed it. A temperature of 37°C, pH 3 and indulin AT at a concentration of 0.2% gave the best enzyme yield.A part of Ph. D. thesis of D.S. Arora.Acknowledgments. Summary Halocyamine A, an antimicrobial substance isolated from hemocytes of the solitary ascidianHalocynthia roretzi, inhibited in vitro the growth of fish RNA viruses (infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus and infectious pancreatic necrosis virus). Pretreatment of RNA virus with halocyamine A reduced the infectivity of the virus toward host cells. The growth of marine bacteria,Achromobacter aquamarinus andPseudomonas perfectomarinus, was also inhibited by halocyamine A but that ofAlteromonas putrefaciens andVibrio anguillarum was not. These results suggest that halocyamine may have a role in the defense mechanisms ofH. roretzi against marine viruses and bacteria.  相似文献

Summary The chromosomes of three species ofPachybrachis and nine ofCryptocephalus chrysomelids were analyzed. The male meiotic bivalent formula ofP. azureus Suffr.,P. catalonicus Burl. andP. petitpierrei Daccordi is 7II+Xyr.Cryptocephalus sexmaculatus Ol. andC. vittula Suffr. have 13II+Xyp,C. bipunctatus L. 14II+Xyr,C. ochroleucus Steph. andC. ocellatus Drap. 14II+Xyp,C. crassus 01. 15II+Xyr,C. sulphureus 01. 15II+Xyp, the same number as inC. fulvus Goeze with 2n=32 chromosomes, whileC. primarius Har. has 19II+Xyp. The modal chromosome number inCryptocephalus is 2n=30 (about 60% of spp.), and most species are characterized their small chromosomes. The low variation found in the karyotypes of Cryptocephalinae along with their possible interrelationships with allied chrysomelid subfamilies are also discussed.  相似文献

Summary The Pelobatids have a basal karyotype of 26 chromosomes, with 6 pairs of large and 7 of small chromosomes (6+7). From this karyotype, shown byLeptobrachium, Pelobates andScaphiopus, those ofMegophrys andSpea (5+8) may be derived, as well as that ofL. pelodytoides, with only 24 chromosomes.Pelodytes has 24 chromosomes and a karyotype 7+5 differing from that of typical Pelobatids under several respects.Research supported by a contribution from the Italian C. Summary The effect of i.p. injection of an aqueous extract of Stannius corpuscles (10 mg/ml/100 g b.wt) on serum calcium levels was investigated inRana cyanophlyctis andBufo andersonii. Summary Chloramphenicol (CAF) administered to rabbits during the whole period of immunization, is able to suppress almost completely the antibody response against horse serum albumin and globulins (HSA, HSG) andEscherichia coli: on the other hand, it does not inhibit antibody response to heterologous RBC. The possible mechanism of the inhibiting action of the CAF in antibody response to HSA, HSG andE. coli is discussed, and some hypotheses are put forward on the possible reasons for the different behaviour of CAF on the immune response induced by heterologous RBC.  相似文献

Summary Plasma amine oxidase activity increased from 23.4 nmol/ml/h during pregnancy to 49.5 nmol/ml/h during an extended post partum period in 10 rhesus monkeys.
