"Sino-US Forum on Basic Science for the Next Fifteen Years" Held in Beijing

February 16-17, 2004, "Sino-US Forum on Basic Science for the Next Fifteen Years", co-sponsored by NSFC and NSF, was held in Beijing. The meeting discussed the future of basic science in the next 15 years and provided consultancy to China' s research for developing medium and long term strategic plan for basic science development. Vice President Shen Wenqing Met with US Science Dean Delegation

NSFC Vice President Prof. Shen Wenqing met with an US science dean delegation on 21 October, 2008. Prof. Shen briefed the delegation on NSFC＇s profile of international cooperation with the United States, followed by discussions on how to better develop China-US collaboration in science and technology and how to encourage US students to do research in China. Dr. Alex DeAngelis, the new Director of NSF Beijing Office, joined the delegation. NSFC staff from the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Bureau of International Cooperation attended the meeting.

President Chen Yiyu Meets with Former NSF Director

NSFC President Chen Yiyu met with Dr.Arden L.Bement,former NSF Director on April 27,2011. Prof.Chen extended his welcome to Dr.Bement and expressed his appreciation to Dr Bement's positive contributions to China-US collaboration in basic research.He also introduced NSFC's recent development. During the meeting,the two sides exchanged views on such topics as climate change,water and energy challenges,and discussed the perspective of collaboration in these fields.

The first plenary session of the Sixth NSFC General Assembly was held in Beijing on May 27, 2008. State Councilor Liu Yandong attended the meeting, gave her greetings and paid tribute to those scientists and technologists who contributed to the quake relief endeavor. She emphasized that NSFC should, guided by the scientific outlook for development, precisely grasp its strategic position in the national innovation system, consistently develop and improve the science funding system and strive to open up a new prospect for science funding.

Top Heads Met at China-US Computer Science Leadership Summit

NSFC Vice President Sun J iaguang, heading a delegation composed of computer science professionals and NSFC staff, attended the Second China-US Computer Science Leadership Summit held in the U. S. A. from July 9 to 13, 2008, which was jointly sponsored by NSFC and NSF. NSF attached great importance to the summit and its Director, Dr. Arden L. Bement, attended the summit. When talking with Prof. Sun, Dr. Bement expressed his hope for the further consolidation of the cooperative relationship between NSF and NSFC and the substantial enhancement of the collaboration and exchanges between scientists from the U. S. A. and China. They also delivered speeches at the opening ceremony.

Multi-disciplinary Research in Traditional Chinese Medicine—An Exploration

This paper discusses the present state of Traditional Chinese Medicine being divided into three leading lines of thought, namely, the Clinical line, the Integration of Western and Chinese Medicine line and the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine line. It also describes the position of Traditional Chinese Medicine being a medical science rich in philosophy and wisdom and a culture centred upon medical science and technology. It outlines the basic characteristic of Traditional Chinese Medicine being rooted in the ‘Holistic Theory’ and ‘Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment’ and pointed out various flaws in methodology in Integration of Western and Chinese Medicine research. It also stresses that in order to make fruitful progress in the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine, multi-discipline research in Traditional Chinese Medicine should be made on a thoroughly understanding of the basic methodology of Traditional Chinese Medicine and follow its established principles.

20世纪80年代初,有学者提出用脐带血干细胞代替骨髓干细胞移植的可能性。1989年,法国医生Gluckman教授将这一设想变为现实,他们用HLA相合的同胞脐带血干细胞进行移植,成功地治疗了一个患范可尼贫血的儿童。1992年,美国纽约血液中心建立世界上第一家脐带血库。目前,全世界已建有几十家脐带血库,所保存的脐带血干细胞已超过54 000份,并为2 000余例患者提供了脐带血干细胞移植。
