Summary Genome sizes of the planariansD. lugubris (2n=8),D. polychroa (2n=8) andD. benazzii (2n=16) were evaluated on metaphase plates by measuring both the Feulgen-DNA contents and the karyotype lengths. In the three species, genome sizes are significantly different; this finding rules out the possibility of a karyotype evolution through simple chromosome rearrangements betweenD. lugubris andD. polychroa. A different Feulgen-DNA content per unit length of karyotype in the three species studied was also found, which suggests that DNA could be differently packed along metaphase chromosomes.  相似文献

The D1 protein of Photosystem II (PSII), encoded by the psbA genes, is an indispensable component of oxygenic photosynthesis. Due to strongly oxidative chemistry of PSII water splitting, the D1 protein is prone to constant photodamage requiring its replacement, whereas most of the other PSII subunits remain ordinarily undamaged. In cyanobacteria, the D1 protein is encoded by a psbA gene family, whose members are differentially expressed according to environmental cues. Here, the regulation of the psbA gene expression is first discussed with emphasis on the model organisms Synechococcus sp. and Synechocystis sp. Then, a general classification of cyanobacterial D1 isoforms in various cyanobacterial species into D1m, D1:1, D1:2, and D1′ forms depending on their expression pattern under acclimated growth conditions and upon stress is discussed, taking into consideration the phototolerance of different D1 forms and the expression conditions of respective members of the psbA gene family.  相似文献

To identify individual chromosomes of a frog karyotype by their fluorescence banding patterns, chromosomes were stained with actinomycin D and 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) after incorporation of BrdU during the late S-phase. The chromosomes of three Rana species which were selected for this study (R. ridibunda, R. lessonae and R. japonica) showed well-defined late replication bands. The fluorescence patterns obtained were the reverse of those produced by a 4Na-EDTA Giemsa-staining technique. Fluorescence patterns of the two water frog species (R. ridibunda and R. lessonae) were similar to each other, except for the different fluorescence of the centromeric heterochromatin, which gave extremely bright signals in R. ridibunda but no signal in R. lessonae. Experiments also showed differences between the fluorescence patterns of R. lessonae chromosome 13 in the Italian and Luxembourgian populations. These results sho w that the fluorescence replication banding using actinomycin D and DAPI is very effective in identifying individual frog chromosomes and detecting their structural changes. Summary Hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration were measured in four chromosomal species and some peripherally semi-isolated and isolated populations of the mole rat superspeciesSpalax ehrenbergi in Israel. HCT was 52.0, 51.4, 50.9, and 47.8%, and Hb was 16.0, 16.6, 16.3, and 14.7 g/100 ml for 2n=52, 58, 54, and 60, respectively. The species 2n=60, which lives in arid habitats, had lower HCT and Hb than the other three species. HCT decreased as aridity increased between the species and within the species 2n=60. Changes in HCT probably reflect clinal changes in both soil permeability to gases and ambient temperature.  相似文献

Summary Green leaf volatiles were shown to interrupt responses to aggregation pheromones of three species of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) which infest pines in the southern United States [the southern pine beetle,Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm.; the four-spined engraver,Ips avulsus (Eichhoff); and the five-spined engraver,Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff)]. The order of effectiveness of the compounds tested for each species was hexanal>hexanal+hexan-1-ol>hexan-1-ol. Neither hexanal, hexan-1-ol nor hexanal+hexan-1-ol was as effective in interrupting pheromone responses ofD. frontalis as verbenone, a known inhibitor of this species. Other than interspecific chemical signals, this is the first report of an interruptant forIps species, and the only report of a pheromone interruptant active for bothIps andDendroctonus species.  相似文献

Summary The proximal half of the A (=X) chromosome ofD. madeirensis has a gene arrangement very similar to the A1 or A6 inversions found inD. subobscura. Polytene chromosome analysis of hybrids betweenD. madeirensis and strains ofD. subobscura homozygous for such inversions shows, however thatD. madeirensis has a gene arrangement different from any known forD. subobscura. These results provide evidence for a greater differentiation of the X chromosome in these species than has previously been described; it seems that the X chromosome is the only one that has undergone structural variation during the speciation process.  相似文献

Summary CosmopolitanDrosophila species can survive wide ecological tolerances measured by resistance to desiccation/temperature extremes compared with endemic rain forest species. Summary In order to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships betweenD. takahashii andD. pseudotakahashii, 2 closely related allopatric species, sexual isolation was studied by the male-choice method. Summary Ethidium bromide was fed toD. melanogaster andD. simulans males in order to test its toxic capacity and potency for the induction of dominant lethals. Our results show that ethidium bromide has a high toxicity and likewise produces dominant lethals to a significant extent in both species, but more effectively inD. melanogaster.  相似文献

Summary Sonographic analyses of songs and calls of Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli) show important structural differences between the geographically isolated western (P.b. bonelli) and eastern (P.b. orientalis) populations. Summary Males ofPodisus fretus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) release a long-range attractant pheromone containing linalool (49.0%), (E)-2-hexenal (34.5%), benzyl alcohol (12.0%), nerolidol (2.0%),-terpineol (1.1%), and traces of several other compounds. The eastern yellowjacket,Vespula maculifrons (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), is attracted to artificial pheromones forP. fretus and for the sympatric species,Podisus maculiventris.The authors thank Mr T.J. Summary Research during the last two decades has clearly pointed out that dramatic ecosystem changes have occured in lakes due to deposition of acid substances and decreased pH. Today a large number of lakes and running waters in Scandinavia are suffering biological damage with disappearing fish populations, overgrowth of the bottom by mosses and filamentous algae, reduced invertebrate fauna, increased transparency etc.—Of all documented biological changes the effect on macrophyte succession, in particular that ofSphagnum, is the most striking effect. Along with the growth of filamentous algae, these changes have brought about major shifts in the composition of the primary producers. The biomass in one lake was estimated to be 6.5 t (dry wt) corresponding to about 24 g m–2, the relevant proportions being 52% forSphagnum, 34% forLobelia and 15% forIsoetes. Percentage production in the whole lake is 54% forSphagnum, 29% forLobelia and 17% forIsoetes, which gives an estimated production of 2.9 t yr–1 or 9 g m–2 yr–1.Sphagnum is a recent flora element and its occurrence is related to the acidification of the lakes. The investigations also show that the growth ofLobelia is reduced in acid lakes compared to other oligotrophic lakes due to shading by the benthic mat of filamentous algae, detritus andSphagnum debris.—One can conclude that there are several quantitative and qualitative changes in the macrophyte community which are related to acidification. One can also conclude that liming of lakes cause elimination ofSphagnum and some increase in the production ofIsoetids.  相似文献

Summary Acetic acid vapour is utilized as an energy source up to a threshold where it becomes a stress in 3Drosophila species. The effect of heat shock on protein synthesis in three relatedDrosophila species belonging to theobscura group was analyzed on SDS-acrylamide gels. Four major heat shock proteins (hsps) were found in these species, in which synthesis reaches a maximum at 34°C. Although the higher molecular weight proteins are conserved, differences in size were found for the small hsps in these species. By means of in situ hybridization usingD. melanogaster probes for the small hsp genes, it was inferred that the small hsp genes of theobscura group species are clustered at the 27A locus in all three species.  相似文献

Dictyostelium discoideum is a eukaryotic microorganism that is attractive for the study of fundamental biological phenomena such as cell-cell communication, formation of multicellularity, cell differentiation and morphogenesis. Large-scale sequencing of the D. discoideum genome has provided new insights into evolutionary strategies evolved by transposable elements (TEs) to settle in compact microbial genomes and to maintain active populations over evolutionary time. The high gene density (about 1 gene/2.6 kb) of the D. discoideum genome leaves limited space for selfish molecular invaders to move and amplify without causing deleterious mutations that eradicate their host. Targeting of transfer RNA (tRNA) gene loci appears to be a generally successful strategy for TEs residing in compact genomes to insert away from coding regions. In D. discoideum, tRNA gene-targeted retrotransposition has evolved independently at least three times by both non-long termina l repeat (LTR) retrotransposons and retrovirus-like LTR retrotransposons. Unlike the nonspecifically inserting D. discoideum TEs, which have a strong tendency to insert into preexisting TE copies and form large and complex clusters near the ends of chromosomes, the tRNA gene-targeted retrotransposons have managed to occupy 75% of the tRNA gene loci spread on chromosome 2 and represent 80% of the TEs recognized on the assembled central 6.5-Mb part of chromosome 2. In this review we update the available information about D. discoideum TEs which emerges both from previous work and current large-scale genome sequencing, with special emphasis on the fact that tRNA genes are principal determinants of retrotransposon insertions into the D. discoideum genome. Zusammenfassung Wird Thymidin dem Standardnährboden vonDrosophila zugefügt (1–2%), erweist es sich als teratogen. Bei Versuchen mit verschiedenen Stämmen vonD. melanogaster traten in allen Fällen nach Behandlung wiederholt morphologische Missbildungen einer ganz bestimmten Kategorie auf. Ausserdem erwies sich Thymidin bei diesen Konzentrationen auch als mutagen zumindest in bezug auf die Auslösung geschlechtsgebundener rezessiver Letalfaktoren. Der mutagene Effekt kann durch Röntgenbestrahlung des Thymidins vor der Anwendung herabgesetzt werden. Auf die möglichen Ursachen der teratogenen und mutagenen Wirkung des Thymidins beiD. melanogaster wird hingewiesen.  相似文献
