Circadian variation of serum testosterone in the adult male rat with a late morning acrophase

Summary Serum testosterone concentrations were measured in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The influence of somatostatin on drug-induced prolactin release in the monkey

Summary The infusion of linear somatostatin did not block prolactin release induced by either perphenazine, TRH or serotonin. Relation of ATPase activities to iron uptake in rabbit and cat erythroid cells

Zusammenfassung Fe⁵⁹-Aufnahme in Kaninchen-Retikulozyten ist durch erhöhte Werte des Isotops in der wasserlöslichen Fraktion und erniedrigten Werten im Stroma der Katzen-Retikulozyten charakterisiert. Bei Kaninchen- und Katzen-Erythrozyten ist dieses Verhältnis umgekehrt. Na⁺ und K⁺ aktivierte ATPase zeigt die höchsten Werte in den Kaninchen-Retikulozyten.

Suppression of ethanol withdrawal by dopamine

Summary An ethanol-inhalation technique was used to determine a potential relationship between dopamine and central nervous effects produced by alcohol. Bothl-DOPA and intracranially injected dopamine resulted in attenuation of ethanol-induced withdrawal convulsion scores, whereas, haloperidol, a known dopaminergic blocker was found to significantly increase convulsion scores.We thankB. Muntjac chromosomes: A new karyotype forMuntiacus muntjak

Zusammenfassung Es gibt bemerkenswerte Unterschiede der Karyotypen vonMuntiacus muntjak vaginalis undM. m. muntjak. Jeder hat einen unterschiedlichen DNA-Wert, aber beide Werte sind niedriger als diejenigen des Menschen. Die Karyotypen-Evolution ist nicht abgeklärt, aber die Befunde zeigen, dass eine taxonomische Revision notwendig ist.

Isolation of the insect paralyzing agent coniine fromSarracenia flava

Summary As part of a study to clarify the relationship between insects and the insectivorous plantSarracenia flava, we have observed the presence of the paralyzing agent coniine in the volatile constituents. Depletion of synaptic vesicles at the frog (Rana pipiens) neuromuscular junctions by tetraphenylboron

Summary At the frog neuromuscular junction tetraphenylboron produced a decrease in miniature endplate potential amplitude, accompanied by a decrease in the number but not the size of synaptic vesicles.This work was supported by NIH Grants Nos NS-07740 and NS-05707 to R. A method for the detection of chemotaxis in mammalian tissue cells

α-d-glucosidase in normal and leukemic lymphocytes

Zusammenfassung Der einfache Nachweis von -d-Glukosidase in leukämischen Lymphozyten gelang spektrophotometrisch. Dies lässt darauf schliessen, dass ein Enzymmangel nicht Ursache für die Glykogenspeicherung dieser Zellen sein kann. Es scheint sich um eine Ansammlung von glykolytischen Zwischenprodukten und nicht um einen Defekt der Glykogenolyse zu handeln.

Elevated kidney glucosyltransferase activity in genetic prediabetic mice

Summary Glucosyltransferase activity in the renal cortex of genetic diabetic KK mice was significantly increased at 40 days of age when compared to that of Swiss albino and F₁ hybrid mice. This increase in enzyme activity in the absence of glucose intolerance can be regarded as an earlier genetic marker for the diagnosis of diabetic microangiopathy.Acknowledgments. Insect venoms: Identification of dopamine and noradrenaline in wasp and bee stings

Zusammenfassung Die Anwesenheit von Dopamin und Noradrenalin im Bienen- und Wespengift wurde durch Fluoreszenzmikroskopie, Dünnschichtchromatographie und Spectrophotofluorimetrie nachgewiesen. Der Dopamin-Gehalt eines Stiches genügt, um die Herztätigkeit eines Insekts zu beschleunigen, was auch die Verteilung der giftigen Bestandteile zu den Wirkungsstellen beeinflussen kann.

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Cholesterin-H³, nach Behandlung von besonders gereinigtem Handelscholesterin mit Tritium entsprechend der Vorschrift vonWilzbach, bei sechsmal wiederholter Bromierung nachFieser frei von Cholestanol-H³ erhalten wird. In so gereinigtem Cholesterin-H³ ist der schwere Wasserstoff gleichmässig über alle wasserstofftragenden Kohlenstoffatome verteilt.

Purification and partial characterization of two lectins fromMomordica charantia

Summary 2 different lectins have been purified from the seeds ofMomordica charantia by gel-filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. These 2 lectins appear to be composed of 2 subunits of 26,000 daltons. Protein fraction I, but not II, showed agglutinating activity toward human type-O red blood cells. The amino acid compositions and amino-terminal sequences of these two homologous proteins are quite different.Acknowledgment. The skillful assistance of Ms M. Diane Forde is greatly acknowledged. Do the products of messenger RNA hydrolysis cause ‘cloudy swelling’?

Résumé L'actinomycin D et les températures d'incubation dépassant l'optimum de croissance causent indépendamment une dégradation de l'ARN instable chezTetrahymena pyriformis vivant. L'dème cellulaire se produit simultanément et il est proportionnel au degré de dépolymérisation. Puisque les effets de l'antibiotique et les changements de température sont additif, ces observations suggèrent que les produits de hydrolyse peuvent aboutir à l'accumulation excessive de l'eau dans la cellule.
