Hemodynamic changes in rats without adrenal medula submitted to hypovolemic shock

Resumen La extirpacion de la medula suprarrenal no provoca alteraciones de la hemodinamia en ratas estudiadas en condiciones basales, mientras que durante el shock hipovolemico las ratas meduloprivas presentan un volumen minuto cardiaco menor, y un aumento de la presion arterial media y de la resistencia periferica total, en relacion a los testigos normales sometidos al mismo tipo de shock.

Aromatization of androgens to estrogens by the rat pineal gland

Résumé Des homogénats de glande pineale de rat mâle métabolisèrent de la testostérone-C¹⁴ in vitro en stradiol-C¹⁴ et en strone-C¹⁴. Les métabolites furent identifiés chiomatographiquement et dans le cas de l'stradiol par recristallisation à activité spécifique constante. La conversion de la testostérone en stradiol fut de 0.19–0.27% et en strone de 0.02–0.04%. Ces résultatsci indiquent que la pinéale ressemble à d'autres régions du cerveau soumises au contrôle de la sécrétion de gonadotropines.

Changes in serum proteins due to lesion or resection of the olfactory bulbs of the rat

Resumen La sección y extirpación bilateral de los bulbos olfactorios, en ratas de ambos sexos, producen disminución de las proteínas séricas totales, albumina y globulinas y, sin modificaciones de la globulina. Esa disminución se hace significativa 21 días después de las operaciones.     

Differential effect of hypophysectomy on skin and tracheal cartilage glycosaminoglycans

Resumen En 12 ratas normales y en 12 hipofisectomizadas 150 días antes se determinaron las concentraciones de ácidos urónicos, glicoproteínas, ácido hialurónico, heparitín sulfato, condroitín-4-sulfato, condroitín-6-sulfato, dermatán sulfato y heparina en piel y cartílago traqueal. Estos estudios demostraron dos hechos: (1) un efecto distinto de la hipofisectomía sobre piel y tráquea en relación con el metabolismo de las glicoproteínas y el ácido hialurónico, cuyas concentraciones aumentaron en la primera y descendieron en la segunda; (2) una disociación entre el comportamiento del ácido hialurónico y los glicosaminoglicanos sulfatados en piel, aumentando la concentración del primero y disminuyendo las correspondientes a los segundos en forma variable segÚn la fracción considerada.

The acidic glycosaminoglycans of the synovial fluid in rheumatoid arthritis

Resumen Se estudiaron los glucosaminoglucanos del líquido sinovial de la rodilla de pacientes con artritis reumatoidea clásica. El nivel de glucosaminoglucanos totales desciende en la artritis un 55% comparado con los controles. Esto es debido principalmente a la disminución del ácido hialurónico (59%). Se confirmó la presencia de pequeñas cantidades de controidin-4-sulfato y se detectaron trazas de una sustancia similar al condroitin-6-sulfato.

Dissociation of glucocorticoid effects of C-21 steroids at high concentrations in thymocytes

Summary A dissociation between inhibition of RNA synthesis and cell lysis was observed when thymocytes of adrenalectomized rats were incubated with high concentrations of pregn-4-ene-11-ol-3, 20-dione and pregna-1,4-diene-11-ol-3,20-dione. In contrast, no dissociation of these effects was found with the typical glucocorticoids cortisol and corticosterone, nor with their 1,4-diene analogs under the same conditions.Acknowledgments. The effect of monoamine synthesis-inhibitors on the ovarian compensatory hypertrophy

Resumen La administración continuada de-metilpara-tirosina, un inhibidor de la síntesis de catecolaminas, impide la hipertrofia compensadora del ovario en ratas. Este efecto es prevenido por la simultânea injección de DOPA, un. precursor de las catecolaminas. El grado de la hipertrofia compensadora del ovario no fue modificado por lap-cloro-fenilalanina, un inhibidor de la síntesis de serotonina. El estudio histológico de los ovarios de los animales tratados con MPT sugiere que ésta bloquea la ovulación, no modificando aparentemente la secreción tonica de las gonadotrofinas FSH y LH.

Scarites buparius,a caraboid beetle with an X1X2Y sex-chromosomes system

Summary Scarites buparius has 2n=37 and n=17+X₁X₂Y. This multiple sex-chromosomes system seems to be the result of a reciprocal translocation between the primitive X-chromosome and an autosome. This is the first caraboid beetle, exceptingCicindela spp., that has multiple sex-chromosomes.This work has been supported by a grant of the Comisión Asesora de Investigación Científica y Técnica, No. 1.552.     

Pineal-related changes in cyclic AMP levels of rat medial basal hypothalamus

Summary Pinealectomy (Px) in adult male rats resulted in increased cyclic AMP accumulation by medial basal hypothalamic (MBH) explants 3 and 7 days after surgery. 24 h after superior cervical ganglionectomy (Gx) an augmented MBH cyclic AMP accumulation was observed. The effects of Px and Gx were additive, as revealed in animals subjected to Gx 3 days after Px.This study was supported by grants from the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) (N^o 6638) and from the Fundación Alberto J. Mitigation of graft-versus-host disease in rats treated with allogeneic and xenogeneic antilymphocytic sera

Summary The survival of rats receiving a sublethal dose of CY and grafted with allogeneic bone marrow, was prolonged by treatment with either allogeneic or xenogeneic anti-lymphocytic sera. These seem to prevent a fatal GVHD while allowing a temporary take of the graft.This work was supported by Grant No. FOR 007. Purothionins inAegilops-Triticum spp.

Resumen EnTriticum durum Desf. (genomiosAB), el genomioA controla la sintesis de purotionina y el genomioB la de purotionina . Las especies diploides del grupoAegilops-Triticum sintetizan ó, pero no las dos. En numerosos aloploides de este grupo se observa la pérdida de la actividad sintética para la purotionina correspondiente a uno de los genomios.     

Some aspects of ovular development during megasporogenesis inPisum sativum L.

Summary This work reports some findings which will aid us in our understanding of the female phase ofPisum sativum embryology. We have observed that the central planes between one ovule and the next form an angle of 60°. We suggest that this ovule arrangement may make it easier for the pollen tube to reach the ovular micropyle in the fertilization process. On the other hand, ovary and ovule growth do not depend on the megasporogenesis stage but have individual characteristics for each plant, every one depending on its own phenotype.Acknowledgments. Kinetics of lymphocyte division in blood cultures studied with the BrdU-giemsa technique

Summary Normal human lymphocytes were cultured for 72 h with different doses of BrdU. The analysis of metaphases processed with the BrdU-Giemsa method shows that in leukocyte cultures 3 different lymphocyte populations coexist which are able to perform 1, 2 or 3 rounds of replication in vitro. Moreover, it was concluded that 5 g/ml is the minimal dose of BrdU inducing good differentiation in the areas of sister chromatid exchanges.This work was supported by grants from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas and the Comisión de Investigaciones Cientificas.     

Delay in skin allograft rejection in rats grafted with fetal adrenal glands

Resumen Se ha observado en este trabajo que el injerto de suprarrenales de fetos en ratas de 6 días de edad determina aumento del tiempo de supervivencia de aloinjertos de piel realizados al 10° día de vida en relación a los testigos y a ratas injertadas con suprarrenales de adulto. Un efecto similar se observó cuando se administró diariamente a partir del 6° día de vida 16-metil prednisona en dosis altas que producían gran trastorno del crecimiento, evidente disminución de peso del timo y en algunos casos muerte del animal.

Localization of peroxidase activity inTrypanosoma cruzi microbodies

Summary Electron microscopic observation ofTrypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes reveals the presence of microbody-like structures (microperoxisomes) in which 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) is peroxidized to electron-opaque material. The role of peroxidase in DAB peroxidation is supported by the enzyme demonstration in disrupted epimastigotes and the microbody-containing cell fractions.This investigation was supported by grants from Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) and the Special Fund for the Study of Chagas Disease (Subsecretaría de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Nación).
