Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)

Summary The defensive anal effluent discharged bySilpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5-pregnan-15-ol-3, 20-dione (2), 5-pregnan-3, 15-diol-20-one (3), 5-pregnan-7, 15-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5-pregnan-3, 7, 15-triol-20-one (5), 5-pregnan-16-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5-pregnan-3, 16-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds1 and6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 g level.Paper No. 78 of the series: Defense Mechanisms of Arthropods. Conjugated terpenoid ketones: A new group of plant growth regulators

Summary ,-unsaturated terpenoid ketones have a root-inducing property on the hypocotyl cuttings ofPhaseoulus aureus. Significantly isopathcoulenone, (I) is distinctly more active in causeing rooting over IAA.Acknowledgment. High-affinity binding ofβ-alanine to cerebral synaptosomes might involve glycine-receptors

Summary High-affinity, Na⁺-independent binding of -alanine to a synaptosomal fraction of rat brain was potently inhibited by glycine and by some other -amino acids, but not by taurine or GABA. This binding mechanism, which was also sensitive to both bicuculline and strychnine, might involve synaptic receptors for both -alanine and glycine.This study was supported in part by Centro Ramón y Cajal and Fundacion Juan March.     

Influences of temperature change on the relaxation and amplitude inhibition by noradrenaline in the rabbit jejunum

Summary In the rabbit jejunum, the elevation of temperature within the range of 25–37°C diminished the sensitivity to noradrenaline (NA) for both the relaxation and amplitude inhibition. The relaxation by NA was mainly mediated via adrenergic -receptors at 25, 30 or 37°C. The amplitude inhibition was mediated via -receptors at 37°C, and both - and -receptors at 30 or 25°C.     

Metabolism in Porifera. IX. Studies on the biological conversion of cholesterol into 19-nor-cholestanol by the spongeAxinella polypoides

Summary The conversion of cholesterol into 19-nor-5-cholestan-3-ol by the spongeAxinella polypoides involves a partial loss (40%) of the 3-hydrogen atom; moreover administration to the sponge of [4-¹⁴C]cholesterol tritiated at C-4 and C-7 showed that the 4- and 7-hydrogen atoms are retained in this conversion. A competitive uptake experiment, [4-¹⁴C]cholesterol vs. [7-³H₂]5-cholestanol, showed that the sponge utilized exclusively cholesterol for the production of 19-nor-5-cholestan-3-ol.Part of this work has been presented at the Nato Conference on Marine Natural Products (Jersey, Great Britain, October, 1976).-This contribution is part of the Programma finalizzato Oceanografia e Fondi marini-sottoprogetto Risorse biologiche C.N.R. Summary The colchicin-induced nuclear inclusions are a postmitotic phenomena. Fusing chromosome vesicles often include a portion of cytoplasm, surrounded by persisting parts of the vesicle membranes (indirect or membraned n.i.). This membrane sometimes degenerates; the n.i. then lies free in the karyoplasm (secondarily direct or free n.i.).     

Consideration on the effects of pollution at community and population level

Summary The effects of pollution at population level are considered in relation to demographic characteristics and overall to the birthrate. The direct and indirect effects of pollution on community structure is discussed. The influence of pollution may vary according to the food-chain structure; (as a consequence, the hazard ceteris paribus will be greater in freshwater communities than in marine ones). Relations between diversity and stability are discussed. In addition, the advantages and difficulties in using diversity and biotic indices for monitoring polluted water are taken into account.     

16-β-methylprednisone from hecogenin

Zusammenfassung Es wird über die Herstellung des 16-Methylprednisons berichtet, welche vom Hecogenin ausgehend über ca. 15 Stufen durchgeführt wird. Als wichtige Zwischenstufe treten 5-Pregn-16-en-3-ol-11, 20-dion-Acetat und 16-Methylen-5-pregnan-3, 17-diol-11, 20-dion auf: letzteres wird durch eine stereospezifische katalytische Reduktion in das entsprechende 16-Methyl-derivat umgewandelt.     

G-protein signaling: back to the future

Heterotrimeric G-proteins are intracellular partners of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). GPCRs act on inactive G·GDP/G heterotrimers to promote GDP release and GTP binding, resulting in liberation of G from G. G·GTP and G target effectors including adenylyl cyclases, phospholipases and ion channels. Signaling is terminated by intrinsic GTPase activity of G and heterotrimer reformation – a cycle accelerated by regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS proteins). Recent studies have identified several unconventional G-protein signaling pathways that diverge from this standard model. Whereas phospholipase C (PLC) is activated by G_q and G, novel PLC isoforms are regulated by both heterotrimeric and Ras-superfamily G-proteins. An Arabidopsis protein has been discovered containing both GPCR and RGS domains within the same protein. Most surprisingly, a receptor-independent G nucleotide cycle that regulates cell division has been delineated in both Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we revisit classical heterotrimeric G-protein signaling and explore these new, non-canonical G-protein signaling pathways.Received 21 October 2004; received after revision 20 November 2004; accepted 30 November 2004     

C-18 hydroxy steroids from the Mediterranean gorgonianLeptogorgia sarmentosa

Summary Five new polyoxygenated steroids, 24-methylcholesta-1,4,22E-trien-16, 18,20-triol-3-one (1), cholest-1,4,22E-trien-16, 18,20-triol-3-one (2), 24-methylcholesta-4,22E-dien-16, 18, 20-triol-3-one (3), cholesta-4,22E-dien-16, 18,20-triol-3-one (4) and 27-nor-24-methylcholesta-4,22E-dien-16,18,20-triol-3-one (5), have been found in a marine organism, the gorgonianLeptogorgia sarmentosa.This work has been done with the financial support of Progetto Finalizzato der la Chimica Fine e Secondaria, C.N.R., Roma. Summary The sterol fraction from leaves of the potato plant,Solanum tuberosum, was found to contain a minor constituent, the structure of which has been established as 4-methyl-5-stigmasta-7,24(28)-diene-3-ol (I). This sterol is most probably identical with ₁-sitosterol and has the same constitution as citrostadienol, differing only in the configuration of the ^{24 (28)}-double bond.

The benzilic acid rearrangement of 3α,17β-Diacetoxy-11-hydroxy-12-oxo-5β-androst-9(11)-ene

Zusammenfassung Die Bildung von 11-Carboxy-3, 11, 17-trihydroxy-13-C-nor-5-androstan 11a,17-Lakton aus 3, 17-Diacetoxy-11-hydroxy-12-oxo-5-⁹(11)-androsten wird beschrieben. Der Mechanismus und die Stereochemie dieser Umwandlung (Retro-Aldolkondensation und Benzilsäureumlagerung) wird diskutiert.     

The in vivo expression of the globin genes of theβ cistron in γ-,δ-, andδβ-thalassemia heterozygotes

There is considerable evidence suggesting that the switch from to and chain production after birth is due, in part, to silencing of the genes by stage-specific factors which bind to their promoters and to the competition from the adult ( and ) genes for a common enhancer element located in the locus control region. As a consequence one can expect that the increased Hb F production in adults with hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin or -thalassemia is directed mainly by -globin genes in cis to the deletion(s) responsible for these conditions. Here we review data on heterozygotes with -, -, or -thalassemia, who also had an^AT mutation, in cis or in trans, which was used as a marker of gene expression. The results show that a deletion affecting adult genes favors the expression of genes in cis, while the deletion of a single gene does not affect the expression of the gene in cis but leads to a faster switch postnatally.     

Orally administered melatonin stimulates the 3α/β-hydroxysteroid oxidoreductase but not the 5α-reductase in the ventral prostate and seminal vesicles of pinealectomized rats

Summary Pinealectomized rats were treated orally with melatonin (MEL) for 14 days. Prostates and seminal vesicles were investigated for the activity of the 4-3-ketosteroid-5-oxidoreductase (5-R) and of the 3/-hydroxysteroid-oxidoreductase (3-HSO). The activity of the 3a-HSO was significantly stimulated (p<0.01, Friedman test) when compared to controls. The activity of the 5-R did not change significantly.This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Sonderforschungsbereich 34 (Endokrinologie).

Summary The synthesis of 3-acetoxy-16, 20-dihydroxy-4-methyl-18-nor-5, 14-pregnano[13,14-f]hexahydro-1, 4-oxazepin-3-one (20a) is described.     

Paul Ehrenfest on the Necessity of Quanta (1911): Discontinuity,Quantization, Corpuscularity,and Adiabatic Invariance

Our object in this paper is to study the antecedents, contents, implications, and impact of a not well-known or appreciated paper by EHRENFEST in 1911 on the essential nature of the different quantum hypotheses in radiation theory. After a careful analysis of EHRENFESTs notebooks, correspondence, and publications, we conclude that the essential points of EHRENFESTs paper were not perceived to a large extent, and hence that its implications were not considered thoroughly. Specifically, we show that EHRENFEST contributed significantly to the clarifications of the differences between PLANCKs and EINSTEINs respective quantum hypotheses, as well as to those of the concepts discontinuity, quantization, and corpuscularity.     

Structural differences of cone ‘oil-droplets’ in the light and dark adapted retina ofPoecilia reticulata P.

Summary The vast majority of oil-droplets in the dark and light-adapted retinal twin-cones ofPoecilia reticulata is of the matrix-type. In bright light (day light+overhead strip light) there occurs in some regions a very pronounced numerical change from matrix to cristate-type, whereas other regions remain unaffected. The functional significance of these differences is discussed.     

On the host-symbiont-cycle of a leafhopper (Euscelis plebejus) endosymbiosis

Summary In the host-symbiont-cycle ofEuscelis plebejus and its bacterial symbionts each of both symbionts (a and t) appears in an infection form during the intraovarial transmission (adult female) as well as during the entrance into the mycetocytes (embryo) and in a vegetative form during the remaining time of the cycle.This work was supported in part by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to ProfessorK. Wirkung von 6β-Methoxy-9β,10α-pregna-4,6-dien-3,20-dion

Summary 6-Methoxy-9,10 -pregna-4,6-diene-3,20-dione inhibites the ⁴-3-oxosteroid-5-reduction in microsomes and the ⁴-3-oxosteroid-5-reduction in the soluble fraction of male rat liver. The 3- and 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase are not inhibited by this substance.
