Useful biochemical markers for the classification of Actinomycetales are: 1. DL- or LL-diaminopimelic acid in the peptidoglycan, 2. sugar composition of polysaccharides, 3. fatty acid spectrum of cell lipids. The occurrence of various kinds of branched fatty acids and of unsaturated fatty acids is of special value.     

Nuclear pores in the spermatozoon of the rat.

The paper describes a hexagonal array of nuclear pores in a non-redundant region of the nuclear envelope underlying the basal surface of the rat spermatozoon head. It is concluded that intranuclear material protruding through these pores is the cause of the characteristic rows of circular 'bumps' found in surface replicas of this region.     

On the mechanism of the glycogenolytic effect of dinitrophenol. Activity of phosphofructokinase in perfused hearts.

To explain the mechanism of DNP action the contents of ATP, ADP, AMP and G-6-P were determined in perfused rat hearts in a period of time in which the rate of the glycogenolysis was increased. The levels of these metabolytes in the extract were consistent with an increase of the phosphofructokinase activity. On the other hand, the finding of higher activity of phosphyrylase beta kinase in DNP-poisoned animals could be explained as due to the low content of G-6-P in the perfused hearts subjected to the action of the drug.

Résumé Pour une étude quantitative de la synthèse du RNA, nous avons utilisé des chromosomes sexuels d'Opossum, morphologiquement faciles à distinguer en prophase et possédant des caractères cytogénétiques inusuels. Les résultats suggèrent que les deux chromosomesX des lymphocytes femelles sont actifs génétiquement (quoique l'un d'eux le soit moins que l'autre) pendant une courte période du cycle de la cellule.

The potential peptic activity of the chick forestomach increases rapidly at the time of hatching. Together with this, the electrophoretic pattern of the pepsinogens shifts to the adult type. These changes take place even under the complete starvation of a newly hatch chick.     

Sleep in the tortoiseKinosternon sp.

Summary Individuals ofKinosternon sp., previously confined to laboratory conditions, were chronically implanted with electrodes for electroencephalogram, electro-oculogram and electrocardiogram recording. Behavioral states of waking and sleep were clearly observed. Two sleep stages were present: quiet sleep and REM or active sleep. Electrical cerebral activity was polymorphic and irregular. EEG frequencies declined and amplitudes diminished with sleep. Arrhythmic spikes occurred during behavioral sleep and declined with waking. Heart rate decreased when passing from wakefulness to quiet sleep. It was slightly but consistently higher during active sleep compared with quiet sleep.
