The pressure responses of lobster larvae following selective cautery and treatment with surface active substances

Summary The pressure responses of phase II larvae of the lobster,Homarus gammarus, are not affected by Cetavlon cetrimide, nor by other surface active substances. Amputation of the first and second antennae indicates that these structures, like the embryonic statocyst are essential neither for the perception of the pressure stimulus, nor for the orientation of the response.This work was carried out while at the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin, Isle of Man. Zusammenfassung Es wird eine neuartige Methode zum Studium der Blutzirkulation in derbem und weichem Gewebe beschrieben. Ein fluoreszierender Stoff wurde intravenös injiziert, das Präparat tiefgefroren, mit einem Hobel geglättet und dann photographiert.     

l-DOPA treatment in Parkinson's disease: Effect on dopamine and related substances in discrete brain regions

Zusammenfassung Beil-DOPA behandelten Parkinsonpatienten wird gefunden, dass Dopamin und Homovanillinsäure besonders im Striatum akkumuliert wurden. Damit wird die Möglichkeit, dass Dopamin an der Antiparkinson-Wirkung desl-DOPA entscheidend beteiligt ist, in direkter Weise gestützt.     

Distribution of DNA and RNA in different regions of cat's brain

Résumé Chez le chat normal, la concentration d'ADN est à peu près la même dans les diverses régions examinées du système nerveux central. Par contre, la concentration d'ARN varie considérablement d'une région à l'autre. Ces résultats suggèrent que la distribution de l'ARN correspond à la différentiation morphologique et fonctionnelle des parties du cerveau.     

Odor maps in the brain: Spatial aspects of odor representation in sensory surface and olfactory bulb

The olfactory sense detects and distinguishes a multitude of different odors. Recent progress in molecular as well as physiological approaches has elucidated basic principles of neuronal encoding of odorants, common to insects and vertebrates. The construction of neuronal representations for odors begins with the task of mapping the multidimensional odor space onto the two-dimensional sensory surface, and subsequently onto the olfactory bulb or antennal lobe. A distributed expression of odorant receptors, albeit restricted to subregions of the sensory surface (large, intermediate or small for zebrafish, mouse or drosophila, respectively), ensures a robust representation, insensitive to mechanical insult. Olfactory receptor neurons expressing the same odorant receptors converge to form a receptotopic map in the olfactory bulb or antennal lobe. The emerging coding principle is a chemotopic representation of odorants at the first brain level, realized either as combinatorial or as monospecific representation, depending on the odorant.

Riassunto Gli estrati di pelle di alcuni comuni anfibi nostrani (Rana esculenta, Rana temporaria) e, ancor più, di certi anfibi sudamericani del generePhyllomedusa contengono rilevanti quantitativi di polipeptidi bradichinino-simili. Negli estratti diPhyllomedusa sauvagi ne sono stati identificati almeno tre, a mezzo di una semplice cromatografia su colonna di allumina basica: polipeptide A, assai simile alla bradichinina per le sue proprietà farmacologiche; polipeptide B, dotato di prolungata ed intensa azione ipotensiva; polipeptide C, particolarmente attivo sull'ileo di cavia. Sono in corso ricerche dirette all'isolamento di questi polipeptidi e al chiarimento della loro struttura chimica.

Zusammenfassung Thrombin in kleinen Konzentrationen beschleunigt den Verlauf des Thromboplastin-Differenzierungs (screening)-Tests, unabhängig davon, ob das Plasma vorher durch Kontakt aktiviert wurde oder nicht. Die Wirkung des Thrombins zeigt sich jedoch deutlicher bei aktiviertem Plasma. Die Thrombinzeit des aktivierten Plasmas ist kürzer als die von inaktivem Plasma.     

Distribution of histamine in 7 brain regions in different species and strains of mammals

Resumen En las especies estudiadas el hipotálamo es la región mas rica en histamina (HT). En la rata, la mayor proporción de HT se localiza en el sedimento de los homogenizados en medio isotónico centrifugados a 10⁵×g; la proporción de HT en el sedimento varia ampliamente de una región a otra.     

Disappearance of the gliofibrillar protein (GFA) during the cultivation of glioblastoma cells]

Absence of GFA in established cell lines from glioblastomas promped us to look for this protein from the first replication of malignant cells in vitro and in following subcultrues. Our results show that GFA disappeared during the first twelve replications, often before the fifth replication. No correlation was observed with a morphological transformation of the cells.     

The factor time in the growth of living substances

Zusammenfassung Zu dem wichtigsten Arbeitsgebiet der Kohlenstoffbiologischen Forschungsstation e.V., Essen, gehört die Massenzucht von Algen. Von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung ist dabei die in bestimmten Zeitabschnitten, zum Beispiel Tagen oder Wochen, zu erreichende Zunahme an organischer Trockensubstanz. In Verbindung mit diesen Arbeiten erschien es reizvoll, der Frage nachzugehen, wie es sich mit der Zunahme organischer Substanz je Zeiteinheit bei den verschiedenen Lebewesen — einerseits Tieren und Pflanzen, andererseits Vielzellern und Mikroorganismen — verhalte, insbesondere, welche minimale Zeitspanne in der Praxis nötig ist, um eine Verdopplung der zu Beginn der Beobachtungen vorhandenen organischen Substanz zu erhalten.Als Messzahlen werden Verdopplungsschritte (DS) = doubling step angewandt. Für kurze Zeitspannen wurden folgende « Spitzenleistungen » (aus der Literatur) ermittelt:Bienen-Maden von 0,1 auf 157,6 mg = 10,67 DS in 4 1/2-5 Tagen; Bacterium coli 1 DS in 16,4 min.;Zuckerrüben 3,4 DS in 1 Woche.In dem Aufsatz werden weitere, sich bei dem Thema aufdrängende Probleme behandelt, so die Zunahme von Populationen im begrenzten Lebensraum, zum Beispiel beiDrosphila, die Frage, ob etwa die gesamte lebende Substanz auf Erden gegenüber der anorganischen Materie eine zunehmende Tendenz zeige und weitere Zusammenhänge.
