Secondary metabolites of the chemically rich ascoglossanCyerce nigricans

Summary Two new metabolites of an apparent propionate origin have been isolated from the organic extract of the ascoglossan molluscCyerce nigricans. The proposed structures for the new natural products are based on interpretation of their physical and spectral properties. The new compounds isolated lacked the potent ichthyodeterrent properties of the whole animal extract suggesting that other molecules are involved in the defense of this shell-less mollusc.     

2,3-Dihydrolinderazulene,a new bioactive azulene pigment from the gorgonianAcalycigorgia sp.

Summary A new azulene pigment, 2,3-dihydrolinderazulene, has been isolated along with guaiazulene and linderazulene as bioactive metabolites from the gorgonianAcalycigorgia sp.     

Plakorin,a potent Ca2+-ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongePlakortis sp.

Summary A new cyclic peroxide, plakorin, which is a potent sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca^a+-ATPase activator has been isolated from the Okinawan marine spongePlakortis sp., its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectral data.Acknowledgments. Structure and stereochemistry of brianolide,a new antiinflammatory diterpenoid from the Okinawan gorgonianBriareum sp.

Summary Brianolide (1), a new antiinflammatory diterpenoid of the briarein class, possessing a substituent at C-12 (R), has been isolated from the Okinawan gorgonianBriareum sp. Its structure has been established from spectral data in conjunction with a single crystal X-ray analysis.     

Structure assignments of two new C-18-oxygenated steroidal ketals isolated from a pacific soft coral of the genusSinularia

Summary Two new C-18-oxygenated sterols possessing a spiroketal function (1 and2) have been isolated from a soft coral of the genusSinularia. The proposed structures are based on spectral data.     

A potent actomyosin ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongeAgelas cf.nemoechinata

Summary A bromine-containing alkaloid, oxysceptrin, has been isolated as a potent actomyosin ATPase activator from the Okinawan marine spongeAgelas cf.nemoechinata, and the structure elucidated to be1 on the basis of the 2D NMR spectral data.Acknowledgments. Marine antitumor agents: 14-deoxycrassin and pseudoplexaurol,new cembranoid diterpenes from the Caribbean gorgonianPseudoplexaura porosa

Two new cytotoxic antitumor diterpenoids of the cembrane class, named 14-deoxycrassin (3) and pseudoplexaurol (4), have been isolated from the Caribbean gorgonian octocoralPseudoplexaura porosa. The structure of lactone3, possessing the infrequently encountered -methylene--lactone ring, has been established from spectral and chemical data and that of alcohol4 has been established from spectral data.     

A novel antagonist of serotonergic receptors,hymenidin, isolated from the Okinawan marine spongeHymeniacidon sp.

Summary A novel bromine-containing pyrrole compound, hymenidin, has been isolated from the Okinawan marine spongeHymeniacidon sp. as a potent antagonist of serotonergic receptors and its structure elucidated using spectral data.     

Detection of toxic metabolites in the hemolymph ofBeauveria bassiana infectedSpodoptera exigua larvae

Highly active metabolites have been detected in the hemolymph of the lepidopteranSpodoptera exigua infected with the mycopathogen,Beauveria bassiana. A combination of phenyl sepharose and CM ion exchange chromatography was utilized to extract the active metabolites from infected hemolymph samples. The active in vivo metabolites, having a molecular mass greater than 10 KDa, were thermolabile and were inactivated by proteinase K. These metabolites were characterized by their ability to disrupt metamorphosis, killing treated larvae at the wandering or pupal stage. Additionally, injection ofS. exigua larvae with active samples caused a reduction in the number of filopodial-producing hemocytes. The biological activities and biochemical properties suggest that novel compounds are produced duringB. bassiana mycosis.     

Alarm pheromones from the Mediterranean opisthobranchHaminoea navicula

Summary Structure and absolute stereochemistry of two new 3-alkylpyridines, haminol-A (3) and haminol-B (4), isolated from the cephalaspidean molluscHaminoea navicula, have been determined by means of spectral and chemical methods. Haminols are secreted byH. navicula when it is molested, and these induce an alarm response in trail-following conspecifics.In part presented at the 32nd IUPAC Congress Stockholm, 2–7 August 1989. Transfer of secondary metabolites from the spongesDysidea fragilis andPleraplysilla spinifera to the mantle dermal formations (MDFs) of the mudibranchHypserlodoris webbi

The opisthobranch molluscHypselodoris webbi is able to select, among its potential preys, sponges chemically rich in furanosesquiterpenoids. The sequestered secondary metabolites act as defensive allomones against predators and are accumulated in some dorsal glands (MDFs). This transfer from sponges to MDFs has been proven by maintainingH. webbi together with some selected sponges in an aquarium for a prolonged period.     

Minor nitrogenous sesquiterpenes from the marine spongeAxinella cannabina. A hypothesis for the biogenesis of the spiro-axane skeleton

Summary Three nitrogenous sesquiterpenoids (4–6), possessing an isocyanide, isothiocyanate or formylamino function, have been isolated from the marine spongeAxinella cannabina. The proposed structures were based on interpretation of spectral data including 2D-NMR techniques and chemical evidence. A plausible pathway for the biogenesis of these compounds and the co-occurring spiro-axane (1–3) metabolites is proposed.Work supported by C.N.R. Brominated diphenyl ethers from a marine bacterium associated with the spongeDysidea sp.

Summary BacteriaVibro sp. isolated from the spongeDysidea sp. were shown to biosynthesize brominated diphenyl ethers. We identified one of the bacterial brominated metabolites using gas liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to compare this product with standard 3,5-dibromo-2-(3,5-dibromo-2-methoxyphenoxy)phenol. The latter has been isolated from ethanol extracts of the spongeDysidea sp.     

New phytotoxic butenolides produced bySeiridium cardinale,the pathogen of cypress canker disease

Summary Two new butenolides, seiridin andiso-seiridin, were isolated from culture filtrates ofSeiridium cardinale, the pathogen of cypress canker, a destructive disease ofCupressus and relatedConiferae These metabolites were characterized as 3-methyl-4-(2-hydroxyheptyl)-2(5H)-furanone and its 4-(3-hydroxyheptyl) isomer, respectively. Chlorotic, and necrotic symptoms were produced on leaves of either host or non-host test plants by absorption of 0.3 mg/ml solutions of either compound. These also showed antibacterial activity.This study was supported in part by the National Research Council, Rome (special ad hoc project Chimica fine e secondaria) and in part by the Ministry of Education, Rome.     

Sex pheromone conversion and degradation in antennae of the silkworm mothBombyx mori L.

Summary In living antennae of the silkworm mothBombyx mori L. the pheromone compound (E, Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol and hexadecanol are enzymatically converted to their corresponding fatty aldehydes, acids and long-chain fatty acid esters. The pheromone is completely degraded at high rates in the antennae of freshly hatched moths. The polar volatile [³H]metabolites exclusively consist of tritiated water. The half-life of the pheromone is about 2.5 min in males and 0.5 min in females. Drying inactivates the enzymes responsible for pheromone oxidation.Dedicated to Professor Adolf Butenandt on the occasion of his 85th birthday     

Furan fatty acid steryl esters from the marine spongeDictyonella incisa which show inflammatory activity

Summary Three new furan fatty acids, (9Z, 19Z)-3, 6-epoxyhexacosa-3,5,19-tetraenoic acid (1a), (8Z, 11Z, 14Z, 17Z)-3, 6-epoxyeicosa-3,5,8,11,14,17-hexaenoic acid (2a), and (8Z, 11Z, 14Z, 17E)-3, 6-epoxyeicosa-3,5,8,11,14,17-hexaenoic acid (3a), and a new polyunsaturated fatty acid (5Z, 8Z, 11Z, 14Z, 17E)-eicosa-5,8,11,14,17-pentaenoic acid (6a), present in the spongeDictyonella incisa as the respective steryl esters, have been isolated as methyl esters and their structures have been determined by spectral and chemical analysis. The furan fatty acid esters have shown a high inflammatory activity, which suggests their potential role as feeding deterrents.     

A new furanoid fatty acid from the soft coralsSarcophyton glaucum andgemmatum

Summary The isolation and spectral data of a new furanoid fatty acid obtained from 2Sarcophyton soft-corals is reported.     

Lipopurealins,novel bromotyrosine derivatives with long chain acyl groups,from the marine spongePsammaplysilla purea

Summary Lipopurealin-A,-B and-C have been isolated from the Okinawan marine spongePsammaplysilla purea. They are inhibitors of Na, K-ATPase, and the structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral data. They are bromotyrosine derived structures with saturated long chain acyl parts.Physiologically active marine natural products from Porifera X. Structure and stereochemistry of attenuol,a new lignan fromKnema attenuata (Wall.) Warb.

Summary A new lignan attenuol has been isolated from the bark ofKnema attenuata (Wall.) Warb. Its structure (I) is deduced on the basis of analytical and spectral data. The compound has been assigned the absolute configuration as 2S,3R-dimethyl-1S-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-6,7-methylenedioxytetralin (III).Contribution No. 487 from the Ciba-Geigy Research Centre.Acknowledgments. Summary A new sesquiterpene alcohol, 12-hydroxy-E--bisabolene, is reported from an undescribed Caribbean sea whip of the genusPseudopterogorgia. The structure of this new alcohol was established based upon spectral analyses and through chemical interconversions.Acknowledgment.
