Induction of hyperlipidemia by human thyroid stimulating hormone immunization in rabbits

Summary In our study we are able to demonstrate that with TSH booster and bleeding animals 10–20 days post immunization, when rabbits have increased in antibody titer, there is an increase in cholesterol and triglyceride. Role of Friend-associated lymphatic leukemia virus in immunization against Friend leukemia complex

Summary Mice inoculated with Friend leukemia complex (FLC) pretreated with concanavalin A are resistant to FLC challenge only when they have become infected with the FLC-associated lymphatic leukemia virus (LLV). In interpreting states of resistance to FLC induced by various immunizing procedures, the possibility that immunity is sustained by an unrecognized LLV infection should always be considered.Supported by a grant from the Italian National Research Council.     

Starvation and gastrin storage in the pyloric antral mucosa of male rabbits

Résumé Parmi les lapins mâles privés de nourriture pendant une période de 72 h au maximum, la quantité de gastrine brutte par gramme fut la plus élevée chez les sujets soumis à ce test pendant 12 h et la moins élevée chez ceux qui l'ont subit pendant 72 h au maximum. L'activité gastrique de l'extrait brut n'était pas affectée par la privation de nourriture et aucune corrélation ne put être établie entre le taux de la glucose sanguine et la gastrine accumulée chez les lapins affamés.

Enzymatic conversion of testosterone to androstenedione by human serum

Zusammenfassung Durchin-vitro-Experimente konnte gezeigt werden, dass im menschlichen Serum ein Enzymsystem vorhanden ist, das Testosteron abzubauen vermag. Als Endprodukte wurden Androstendion sowie weitere bisher noch nicht identifizierte Steroide nachgewiesen.     

Effect of dibenzyline on serum cholesterol in rabbits

Zusammenfassung Im Gegensatz zu den Beobachtungen, die zeigten, dass adrenergische Substanzen Serumlipoide einschliesslich Serumcholesterin erhöhen, wird in kurzfristigen Versuchen an Kaninchen eine etwas unregelmässige Senkung des Serumcholesterins nach Injektion von Noradrenalin und keine signifikante Beeinflussung des Serumcholesterins nach Injektion von Serotonin gefunden. Dibenzylin erhöhte in kurzfristigen Versuchen das Serumcholesterin ausgesprochen signifikant.

Asscorbic acid portects against male infertility in a teleost fish

An animal unable to synthesize ascorbic acid uniquely minicks human and non-human primates. Therefore, in this study we used the rainbow trout, a teleost fish, as the model animal to study the importance of dietary ascorbic acid on the fertilizing ability of sperm. A high concentration of ascorbic acid in semen plays a key role in maintaining the genetic integrity of sperm cells, by preventing oxidative damage to sperm DNA. This study will show that the concentration of asorbic acid in seminal plasma refelcts the dietary fed either an ascorbate-free diet (from 4.74±0.9 to 0.16±0.08 g ml^–1) or an ascorbate-rich diet (from 37.9±4.7 to 17.7± 3.2 g ml^–1) during the sperimnation season. The relationship between ascrobate status and fertility was studied in six groups of fish fed graded levels of ascorbic acid, which sperimated over a 150-day-period. Sperm from individual males was used to fertilize several batches of eggs. When the seminal plasma ascorbate concentration decreased to 7.3 g ml^–1 a significant decrease of fertilization rate and the hatching rate of embryos resulted. This is the first evidence that dietary ascorbate level directly affected sperm quality and influenced male fertility in a scruvy-prone vertebrate.

The Rabbit bovipest virus selectively destroys the lymphoid B line in the Rabbit. Estrogens inhibit this destruction when they are administered before the infection which leads are to think that they act on membrane sites of the lymphocytes.     

Cyclic variations in luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormone excretion by male rabbits,indicating a male equivalent to the oestrous cycle

Summary Cyclic variations of the urinary concentrations of gonadotropins in the male rabbit have been demonstrated. The mean durations of the cycles, 5–7 days, are close to that of the oestrous cycle of the female rabbit.

Summary Ovarian follicles isolated from female rabbits after active immunization against testosterone-3-oxime bovine serum albumin produced more testosterone than similar follicles from controls.This work was supported by the Medical Research Council of Canada MT 4192.
