Mice of the BALB/cJ strain have more dopamine neurons than mice of the CBA/J strain. We now report that BALB/cJ mice have less circulating and pituitary prolactin than CBA/J mice, a relationship expected from the difference in tuberoinfundibular dopamine neuron number.

Regional and strain variation in brain 3′∶5′ cyclic adenosine monophosphate of inbred mice

Summary Regional variations were found in cAMP levels in flash frozen mouse brains with the pons and cerebellum having higher levels than the cerebrum. There were also strain variations with CBA/J and BALB/cJ having higher levels than C57B1/6J in the pons and cerebellum.

Genetic differences between inbred strains of mice; a new source of variation in high-sulphur keratins

Proteins were extracted by improved techniques from the hair of inbred strains of Peru, C57BL/6 and CBA/Ca mice. The extracts were characterized by amino acid analysis and high resolution polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and previously unreported strain differences were observed. Genetic analysis confirmed them.     

Indirect visualization of hematopoietic colony-forming stem cell (CFUs) as a possible target cell for Mycoplasma arthritidis

Utilizing specific rabbit antiserum against M. arthritidis together with complement, a portion of the marrow 7-day CFUs population of CBA mice infected with live mycoplasma organisms 1 day previously was shown to be inactivated. These cells might therefore be considered as candidate target cells for M. arthritidis. 11-day CFUs were unaffected by similar treatment.     

Cytotoxicity of mouse peritoneal cells after alloimmunization]

CBA Mice were immunized by two intraperitoneal injections of 30 X 10(6) DBA/2 or C57BL/6 spleen cells at days--12 and--2. Peritoneal cell population was obtained at day zero by washing the peritoneal cavity of Mice. Adherent cells were then separated using a 2 hrs. incubation in "Falcon" plates followed by washing. This macrophage-rich peritoneal cell population was found nonspecifically cytotoxic against 51Cr labeled tumoral target cells: P815 X DBA/2 mastocytoma cells, EL4 X C57BL/L lymphoma cells and spontaneous lymphoma AKR cells (same H--2k as CBA). This adherent peritoneal cell cytoxicity was demonstrated after 24 hrs. incubation with the target cells. It was found in nonspecific combination as well as when using target cells syngeneic to the donor. These findings suggest that adherent peritoneal cell cytotoxicity could be at least partly due to macrophages and result from factor (s) released by sensitized lymphocytes in vivo in the same way as has been previously demonstrated in vitro.     

Effect of glucocorticoids injected into pregnant female mice and rats on weight of male sexual glands in adult offspring and testosterone level in fetus in genotype-dependent

Injection of corticosterone into CBA/Lac, C57BL/6J and BALB/c mice, or hydrocortisone into aggressive and domesticated rats, on days 16 and 18 of pregnancy decreased the weight of sexual glands in adult male offspring of the C57BL/6J and domesticated mothers but increased these values in male offspring of the CBA/Lac and aggressive mothers. When injected into pregnant aggressive and domesticated rats, corticosterone affected testosterone levels in 21-day-old male fetuses. The changes were also genotype-dependent and followed the course of changes in the weight of the accessory sex glands in adults. It is suggested that glucocorticoids given during the prenatal period can effect plasma testosterone levels of male fetuses and the development of the sexual glands in a genotype-dependent manner.

Effets de l'AET sur la spermatogenèse de souris irradiées

Summary The testes of hybrid mice (CBA × C57Bl) were irradiated with 1368 R of X-rays. Half of the animals received an intraperitoneal injection of 8 mg of AET before irradiation. Each week, 5 males of each group were sacrificed. Histological examination of the testes and the epididymus showed that AET is able to protect, to some extent, against testicle damage induced by X-rays.     

Influence of melatonin,constant light,or blinding on reproductive system of gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus)

Summary Male and female gerbils were implanted s.c. with a pellet containing 2 mg melatonin/23 mg beeswax every 2 weeks for a total of 3 implants. A significant depression of ovarian and uterine weight was noted in female gerbils receiving melatonin implants. In the melatonin-treated male gerbils, growth of the accessory organs was significantly inhibited although testis size was not depressed.Supported by NSF grant No. BMS-74-06276 and Population Council grant No. M 74.87.     

Tumor incidence in Visna virus inoculated mice.

Mice (female Swiss albino) inoculated when newborn with Visna virus had tumors in 77% of cases when examined 8-12 months later. The tumors were mainly of the mammary carcinoma type. The tumor incidence in non-infected control animals was only 20%. In contrast, no increased incidence of tumors was observed among Visna virus-inoculated inbred mice (BALB/c, CBA and DBA) with low incidence of spontaneous mammary carcinoma.     

Proliferation of spleen cells from mice infected with friend virus in the spleens of unirradiated and irradiated mice

Résumé Quand des cellules spléniques de souris CBA/HT₆T₆ infectées par le virus de Friend sont injectées à des souris CBA/H normales, les rates des receveurs s'hypertrophient au cours de la semaine suivante. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) enhances concanavalin A reactivity of thymocytes from the low-LPS-responder mouse strain C3H/Hej.

The capacity of LPS to enhance Con A reactivity of thymocytes was studied comparatively in the low-LPS-responder C3H/Hej mice and the high-LPS-responder CBA mice. The extent of synergism LPS + Con A was found similar in both strains.     

Variation of the inflammatory response of an autologus implant function and viability: mixed and unilateral inflammatory response]

The behaviour of an autologous grafted implant depends upon its viability. In our study, pericardial implants were used as cardiac valves. Results showed that when using fresh live pericardium, an inflammatory response developed destroying it within 8 days. When implants cells were killed without alteration of their antigenicity--in order to prevent rejection--cellular growth and neovascularisation from implantation site occurred leading to a secondary live graft. Controlled killing of the implant seems to be an essential step in order to get live grafts.     

Age-related changes of the pattern of non-histone proteins in active and condensed fractions of mouse liver chromatin and hepatocarcinoma

Electrophoretic analysis of histones and non-histone acid-soluble proteins in active (nuclease sensitive) and inactive chromatin from liver of young and old CBA mice and in age-related hepatocarcinomas showed a higher ratio of NHP:histones in active chromatin in old cells. Some liver- and hepatoma-specific fractions of non-histone proteins have been identified as chromatin matrix proteins.
