Summary Purified elastase prepared by adsorption on synthetic zeolite in proper concentrations causes the coagulation of blood. Elastase was found to have no direct coagulative action on purified fibrinogen. Its coagulating action is due to the fact that it reacts with prothrombin to form thrombin. The reaction between prothrombin and elastase is independent of the presence of either platelets, thromboplastin or Ca-ions.

Summary Larvae ofSalamandra salamandra quadrivirgata Dürigen and tadpoles ofXenopus laevis Daud, treated with a percutaneous application of thyroxin, show a more intensive calcification of their skeletal system after a precocious metamorphosis. The calcified area of bones is increased; additional centres of calcification can be distinguished in quite a number of other skeletal elements. By thyroxin-soaked agar implants in the hindlimbs ofAmbystoma mexicanum, deposition of calcium salts is furthered in the bones of the leg treated, as well as in the adjacent pelvic girdle, thus demonstrating that the thyroid hormone exerts a direct effect upon calcification. It is supposed that during normal metamorphosis the thyroid gland plays an equal part in the process of calcification in the skeletal system.

Summary In experiments on rabbits, the influence of the innervation on the synthesis of adrenaline in the suprarenals was investigated. After depleting the glands of adrenaline by repeated injections of reserpine, one splanchnic nerve was sectioned. It was found that in the denervated suprarenal gland, the resynthesis was slower than in the normal gland. This suggests that the innervation is of importance for the rate of synthesis of adrenaline.

Summary While in dogs intravenously administered alcohol is eliminated as a straight function of time, it was found that the combustion of alcohol, when given intraperitoneally in rats, depends on the concentration at a given time. Since the dog — like man — belongs to a species with a slow alcohol combustion, while the rat (together with the mouse) has the highest metabolic velocity, it is supposed that the supply of alcohol dehydrogenase might determine not only the metabolic velocity as such but also the rhythm of alcohol combustion: when the ADH supply is low, the combustion capacity limit will be reached at low blood alcohol concentrations and the elimination curve will become linear.

I mitocondri contengono tutta l'attività citocromossidasica e succinodeidrogenasica, mentre i microsomi solo una metà della attività DPNH cit. c riduttasica totale. Spettri differenziali hanno rivelato la presenza, nei microsomi, di un citocromo avente una banda a 428–430 mµ.

Summary A new group of iron-containing metabolites, with growth stimulating properties for a number of microorganisms, has been isolated from streptomycetes and namedferrioxamines. It is proposed to include them, together with some known substances, like ferrichrome, coprogen and the terregens factor, which either contain or bind iron, in a new class of growth factors, thesideramines.The biological property of the sideramines is counteracted by iron-containing antibiotics from streptomycetes, thesideromycins. They comprise, besides known products like grisein and albomycin, two new groups of antibiotics, among them the highly potentferrimycins.

Über die optimale Zusammensetzung der Nahrung

Résumé La notion d'«alimentation optimale», préconisée parMacCollum, est soumise à une critique au cours de laquelle l'auteur montre les difficultés qui se présentent lorsque l'on veut préciser cette notion. Il relève le rôle encore peu clair que joue la flore intestinale pour la synthèse de substances essentielles à l'alimentation de l'homme. La quantité optimale nécessaire n'est en matière d'alimentation pas une valeur stable, car elle dépend de la situation générale du métabolisme, ainsi que le prouvent certains exemples de la physiologie des vitamines B.Une méthode particulièrement adéquate, spécifique pour reconnaître une situation optimale de l'alimentation, est donnée dans la méthode d'autosélection («self selection»), plus spécialement sous la forme développée parC. P. Richter. On peut trouver bien des analogies entre les résultats expérimentaux et certains faits connus de l'alimentation humaine. En ce qui concerne le régime optimal pour l'homme, seules les expériences sur l'homme sont déterminantes, comme elles ont été entreprises aux Etats-Unis au cours de la dernière guerre chez des volontaires.Les recherches expérimentales sur l'effet que les vitamines et d'autres substances alimentaires déterminent sur le développement des infections et des tumeurs malignes montrent qu'au régime alimentaire suboptimal et optimal s'oppose le régime superoptimal.

Elektrophysiologische Untersuchungen über die Ultraviolettempfindlichkeit von Insektenaugen

Summary Using the electroretinogram, the relative spectral sensitivity of the compound eye of the cockroachPeriplaneta americana and the flyCalliphora erythrocephala has been measured between 347 and 673 m μ. Besides the well known sensitivity distribution for spectral lights between red and blue, a further rise of sensitivity is demonstrated in the violet and ultraviolet part of the spectrum, reaching the highest value at the shortest wavelength available. Using selective adaptation (P. am.) and different stimulus intensities (C. er.), sensitivities for ultraviolet light were shown to be independent from those in the remaining part of the spectrum. Thus, more than one photopigment are assumed to be present in these eyes, one of them responsible for vision in the ultraviolet.

Summary Carcinus maenas was filmed in normal active movement. When turning actively,carcinus maenas showed optomotoric reactions. The reactions were irregular when carcinus maenas was blinded or when the environment was homogeneous.
