Unique occurrence of fenchol in the animal kingdom

Summary (–)--Fenchol, a compound occurring in plants but not heretofore reported to occur in an animal product, was isolated from volatiles released by adult male Mediterranean fruit flies,Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, with the male's previously identified sex pheromones. Changes in the lumen of coronary vessels under oligemic hypotension

Conclusions The decrease of circulating blood volume, resulting in oligemic hypotension, may evoke in anaesthetized cat the active constrictory coronary vessel responses of 2 types, one occuring immediately after start of the hypotension and the other having a significantly prolonged latency.

Some aspects of ovular development during megasporogenesis inPisum sativum L.

Summary This work reports some findings which will aid us in our understanding of the female phase ofPisum sativum embryology. We have observed that the central planes between one ovule and the next form an angle of 60°. We suggest that this ovule arrangement may make it easier for the pollen tube to reach the ovular micropyle in the fertilization process. On the other hand, ovary and ovule growth do not depend on the megasporogenesis stage but have individual characteristics for each plant, every one depending on its own phenotype.Acknowledgments. Tetrapyrrole biosynthesis from 4,5-dioxovaleric acid inRhodopseudomonas spheroides

Summary Porphyrin biosynthesis from 4,5-dioxovaleric acid was studied in cell suspensions ofR. spheroides. The experiments show that 4,5-dioxovaleric acid is a far precursor of porphyrins through amino laevulinic acid formation in a transamination reaction involving also 1-alanine. It differs radically from the classical aminolaevulinic acid synthesis using glycine and succinyl CoA as substrates.Acknowledgments: The authors are indebted to Dr Rodolfo García for helpful discussions and criticisms. On the stability of cognitive processes

Summary An empirical and mathematical model for self-organization is proposed, based on elemental properties, on unique interaction and on the combination of hierarchical elements. In the model, higher elements are stabilized by the cognitive (strong) interaction of subelements, disregarding intermediate elements. This is called elementary reductionism and is illustrated by the sequence quarks-elementary particles-atoms-molecules-cells-organisms-societies. Optimal dynamic interaction of nonidentical elements is called cognitive stability. This is compared with thermodynamic equilibrium. The principal differences are outlined.

High-affinity binding ofβ-alanine to cerebral synaptosomes might involve glycine-receptors

Summary High-affinity, Na⁺-independent binding of -alanine to a synaptosomal fraction of rat brain was potently inhibited by glycine and by some other -amino acids, but not by taurine or GABA. This binding mechanism, which was also sensitive to both bicuculline and strychnine, might involve synaptic receptors for both -alanine and glycine.This study was supported in part by Centro Ramón y Cajal and Fundacion Juan March.

Responses of resistance and capacitance vessels at various frequency electrical stimulation of sympathetic nerves

Conclusion (1) The maximal reactions of cerebral resistance vessels arise at the stimulation frequency of 30 cps, the maximal reactions of capacitance vessels at the frequency of 10 cps. (2) Reactions of resistance vessels in the pulmonary lobe increase in the range of stimulation frequencies from 11–50 cps, maximal reactions of pulmonary capacitance vessels are observed at the frequency of 30–40 cps. (3) Reactions of resistance vessels situated below the abdominal aorta bifurcation increase progressively in the range of frequencies from 6–50 cps, the magnitude of capacitance vessel reaction reaching its maximum value at 20 cps.
