Summary Ectopic transplantations of prothoracic leg imaginal discs of mature 3rd instar larvae ofSarcophaga bullata on to young prepupae resulted in the development of supernumerary legs. The nerves that connected these legs with the host's CNS projected in the appropriate neuromere of the thoracico-abdominal ganglion.Supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Diese Potentiale scheinen nur teilweise in die Perikarya einzudringen. Erregungshemmende postsynaptische Potentiale wurden ebenfalls festgestellt. Sie scheinen ihren Ursprung nahe der Somata zu haben. Potentiale wurden selten von den geschwollenen Endungen der neurosekretorischen Neuriten des Corpus Cardiacum abgeleitet.

Summary Ontogeny of light response in the compound eyes of the fly,Sarcophaga bullata was investigated. Photoreceptor properties of an ectopic eye in the fleshfly,Sarcophaga bullata

Summary Ectopic eyes were produced on the fleshfly,Sarcophaga bullata by transplantation of imaginal eye discs. Taste perception and coding in the periphery

Recent identification of taste receptors and their downstream signaling molecules, expressed in taste receptor cells, led to the understanding of taste coding in the periphery. Ion channels appear to mediate detection of salty and sour taste. The sensations of sweet, umami and bitter taste are initiated by the interaction of sapid molecules with the G-protein-coupled receptors T1Rs and T2Rs. Mice lacking either PLCβ2 or TRPM5 diminish behavioral and nerve responses to sweet, umami and bitter taste stimuli, suggesting that both receptor families converge on a common signaling pathway in the taste receptor cells. Nevertheless, separate populations of taste cells appear to be uniquely tuned to sweet, umami and bitter taste. Since PLCβ2-deficient mice still respond to sour and salty stimuli, sour and salty taste are perceived independent of bitter, umami and sweet taste. In this review, the recent characterization of the cellular mechanisms underlying taste reception and perception, and of taste coding in the periphery will be discussed. Summary Topical application of an insect growth regulator, ZR-2646 on adult females ofSarcophaga bullata affects the viability of the eggs. Initial transdetermination in the first leg discs of differentDrosophila species

Initial transdetermination leads from lateral and medial halves of male first leg imaginal discs almost exclusively to structures of the base and the spread (blade) of the wing. Mesonotum never appeared. The frequency of transdetermination is species-specific and most probably cell-autonomous. Medial halves transdetermine more frequently than lateral halves. Under the influence of an equivalent amount of blastema growthD. nigromelanica transdetermine with a much higher frequency thanD. virilis.     

Hormonal control of pheromone responsiveness in the male black cutwormAgrotis ipsilon

In Lepidoptera, reproduction is linked to chemical communication between conspecific partners. When exposed to the female sex pheromone, males respond by exhibiting typical sexual behaviour which leads to mating. Here we show that presence of the juvenile hormone producing gland (corpora allata) of the male black cutworm,Agrotis ipsilon, is necessary for pheromone responsiveness. Allatectomized males do not show any sexual behaviour, although their antennal olfactory system is functional. Allatectomized males implanted with active corpora allata recover full pheromone receptivity. It is suggested that reproductive processes are synchronized in males and females through endocrine control; timing of the mating activity could serve as an adaptive strategy linked to the migratory behaviour of this species.     

Action of transmitters on the responsiveness of effector cells

Zusammenfassung Die Regulation der Empfindlichkeit der Effektorzellen ist in der vorliegenden Übersicht an Speicheldrüsen, hauptsächlich an der Submaxillarisdrüse als Modell untersucht worden. Es entwickelt sich eine gesteigerte Empfindlichkeit, wenn man die Verbindung mit dem zentralen Nervensystem durch chirurgische Dezentralisierung oder durch Behandlung mit ganglienblockierenden Substanzen unterbricht. Eine gewisse Sensibilisierung kann auch erhalten werden, indem man die afferenten Nervenfasern im sekretorischen Reflexbogen durchschneidet. Die Versuche deuten darauf hin, dass der sekretorische Impuls eine Rolle bei der Regulation des Empfindlichkeitsniveaus spielt. Dass dieser Effekt ebenso wie der sekretorische durch Acetylcholin vermittelt wird, geht daraus hervor, dass Sensibilisierung eintritt, wenn das Versuchstier mit Botulinustoxin behandelt wird, da dieses die Freisetzung von Acetylcholin verhindert, oder durch Atropinsubstanzen, die die Wirkung des Acetylcholins auf die Drüsenzellen verhindern. Andererseits kann eine durch parasympathische Dezentralisierung hervorgerufene Sensibilisierung durch tägliche Injektionen von Pilokarpin, Mecholyl oder Physostigmin aufgehoben werden; auch das normale Empfindlichkeitsniveau kann durch eine solche Behandlung gesenkt werden. Behandlung mit Botulinustoxin oder mit Atropinsubstanzen oder postganglionäre parasympathische Denervierung ergeben eine Sensibilisierung, die ausgesprochener ist als diejenige, welche auf parasympathische Dezentralisierung folgt. Diese und andere Beobachtungen deuten darauf hin, dass Acetylcholin ständig von den postganglionären Nervenendigungen abgegeben wird und dass dieses Acetylcholin, wie auch das von den Nervenimpulsen freigesetzte, die Empfindlichkeit der Effektorzellen kontrolliert. Entsprechend scheint Sympathin von den postganglionären sympathischen Nervenendigungen abgegeben zu werden und zur Regulation der Empfindlichkeit beizutragen; postganglionäre sympathische Denervierung ruft eine gewisse Sensibilisierung hervor, und eine Behandlung mit Bretylium oder Guanethidin hat den gleichen Effekt.

Zusammenfassung Bei der Katze wird die Empfindlichkeit der Submaxillarisdrüse gegenüber chemischen Reizen verringert, wenn während zwei Tagen subkutane Eserin-injektionen verabreicht werden. Damit ist bewiesen, dass das Empfindlichkeitsniveau der Drüse von der Acetylcholinkonzentration abhängig ist.     

Quantitative changes in the phosphorus fractions of transplanted brain tumors during complete ischemic incubation

Zusammenfassung Glukose, Glykogen, Milchsäure, ATP und 5 phosphathaltige Fraktionen wurden an experimentellen, anärobisch-inkubierten Hirntumoren bestimmt. Die Mengen anorganischen Phosphats und Milchsäure waren grösser als die vom Katabolismus niedermolekularer Substanzen erwarteten. Die Möglichkeit besteht, dass die Pentose aus Nukleinsäuren und säurelöslichen Oligonukleotiden als Quelle der überschüssigen Milchsäure entstammt. Dies würde unter anärobischen Bedingungen eine weitere Energiereserve für Tumorzellen darstellen.
