Adrenal corticosteroidogenesis after removal of ventral prostate gland

Summary Removal of the ventral prostate gland in adult male rats causes an increase in adrenal weight, and stimulation of adrenal ⁵-3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity along with elevation of serum levels of corticosterone and prolactin.     

Ultrastructural changes in rat liver cells after intramuscular implantation of a Walker tumor

Résumé L'implantation i.m. de la tumeur de Walker chez les rats provoque une dilatation, une désorganisation et une dégranulation progressives du réticulum endoplasmique granuleux des hépatocytes. Ces changements, qui s'accompagnent en même temps d'une prolifération du réticulum endoplasmique lisse, représenteraient les manifestations ultrastructurales d'une insuffisance microsomale démontrée biochimiquement dans le foie des rats affectés par la tumeur de Walker.

Time-course of changes in lipofuscin-like pigments in rat liver homogenate and mitochondria after whole body gamma irradiation

Summary An increased level of lipofuscin-like pigments in rat liver homogenate was observed 18 days after whole body gamma irradiation, while in mitochondria they decreased below the control value.     

Age-dependent changes of rat liver plasma membrane composition

Summary The chemical composition of liver plasma membrane was studied in Wistar rats aged between 3 and 24 months. Results obtained indicate a significant age-dependent positive correlation of both the protein:phospholipid and cholesterol:phospholipid ratios, whereas the protein:cholesterol ratio seems to remain unaffected. Phospholipid analysis of liver plasma membrane reveals that only the phosphatidylcholine content has a significant negative correlation with age; all other phospholipid species remain basically unchanged.Supported by a grant of the Italian National Research Council, Project Preventive and Rehabilitative Medicine, Subproject Mechanisms of Aging.

On the biomechanical function of the liver capsule

Summary We have carried out histomechanical studies on the human and bovine liver capsule under tension loading. Results: Nonlinear force-time curve under extension with constant speed, initial upper and lower summit decrease of the dynamic relaxation curve, amplitude diminution phenomenon of the dynamic relaxation in the lower nonlinear part of the extension-time curve, dynamic (cyclic) force recovery.Acknowledgments. Excitability changes and muscle atrophy after de-afferentation

Zusammenfassung 1. Die Deafferenzierung der hinteren Extremität bei Ratten und Katzen verursacht eine Neigung zur Extension, welche sich 7–10 Tage nach der Operation zu entwickeln beginnt; diese sehr ausgeprägte Neigung wird durch eine erhöhte Erregbarkeit der motorischen Vorderhornzellen erklärt, welche die Extensoren innervieren.2. An der deafferenzierten Extremität atrophieren die Antigravitationsmuskeln (m. soleus und m. gastrocnemius), während man bei den Flexoren (m. extensor digitorum longus und m. tibialis anterior) kein Anzeichen von Atrophie findet.3. Die Deafferenzierungs-Atrophie der Antigravitationsmuskeln ist als eine in der Peripherie eintretende metabolische Folge des veränderten Funktionszustandes der Nervenzentren aufzufassen. Diese Ansicht konnte mit Hilfe weiterer Experimente (Reinnervation und Arbeitshypertrophie) bestätigt werden.     

The liver blood flow after local X-irradiation

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe der Clearance von kolloidalem Radiogold, der Leber- und Milzspeicherung wurde die Durchblutung der Leber nach lokaler Bestrahlung der Leberregion bestimmt. Im Anschluss an 500, 1000 oder 2000 R wurde eine Verminderung der Leberdurchblutung festgestellt. Eine Restitutio ad integrum wurde dosisunabhängig 3–4 Tage post irritationem beobachtet.     

Biochemical changes in mango after infection withRhizoctonia bataticola

Summary Rhizoctonia bataticola is responsible for the spoilage of mango fruits (Mangifera india) during post-harvest preservation and storage. Culture ofR. bataticola exhibited significant pectinase and cellulase activity. InRhizoctonia-infected fruits an increase of protease and cellulase activity, and a decrease in certain enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism, were observed in comparison to healthy fruits.     

Cumulation of liver lipids after administration of iron

Zusammenfassung Die vorübergehende Kumulation der Leberlipide nach Verabreichung von zweiwertigem Eisen und Askorbinsäure führte zur Annahme, dass der durch Eisen induzierte peroxidative Abbau der ungesättigten Fettsäuren am anomalen Stoffwechsel teilnimmt.     

Pathological changes in the liver of mice given 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.

In C57BL/6 mice a single oral dose of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (LD50 126 mug/kg) results in loss of body weight and death with an enlarged fatty liver after ca. 21 days. A progressive necrotic centrilobular liver lesion is also seen.
