Lipoperoxide formation in the retina in ocular siderosis

Summary Insertion of iron nail into the vitreous cavity provoked the formation of lipoperoxide in the retina. In accord with the increase in lipoperoxide in the retina, ERG began to decrease. In vitro experiment using isolated retina, lipoperoxide was found to be increased in the presence of ferric or ferrous ions, while it was inhibited by adding antioxidants or ethylenediamine tetraacetate. From these results, direct cause of retinal degeneration in siderosis could be ascribed to the formation of lipoperoxide by iron-ions liberated from the piece of iron, resulting into the degeneration of the visual cell layers of the retina.     

Short axon ganglion cells in the chick retina

Using Golgi's staining technique, we investigated some ganglion cells whose axons do not project out of the retina area. These axons, after following a short trajectory through the optic nerve fiber layer or through the 5th stratum of the inner plexiform layer (IPL), change their direction and end in the inner stratum of the IPL.

Summary In rats, glutamic acid decarboxylase activity increased in the proximal portion of the optic nerve after its ligation, whereas the activities of choline acetyltransferase and tyrosine hydroxylase remained constant. Possible centrifugal neurons to the retina are GABAergic.     

A visual pigment of the sturgeon retina

The visual pigments of hybrid sturgeon (a cross between Acipenser ruthenus (male) and Huso huso (female) have been studied both by the methods of incomplete partial bleaching and HPLC analysis. On the basis of the results obtained the relationship between the structure of opsins and the spectral characteristics of visual pigments is discussed.     

ATPase in the normal and dystrophic developing retina of the rat

Riassunto Viene descritto un aumento significativo dell'attività specifica dell'ATPasi (attività/mg proteine) durante lo sviluppo post-natale della retina in ratti normali ed in ratti con retinite pigmentosa ereditaria. Il rapporto tra attività ATPasica in presenza di Mg⁺⁺-Na⁺-K⁺ ed attività ATPasica in presenza di Mg⁺⁺ non varia nella retina normale, mentre esso va incontro ad un precoce declino durante lo sviluppo della retina distrofica. Il significato di questi dati è discusso molto brevemente.     

Protein renewall in the photoreceptor outer segments of the pigeon retina

Résumé Les segments externes des bâtonnets de la rétine du pigeon sont totalement renouvelés en 3–4 jours. La distinction fondamentale entre les méchanismes de renouvellement des protéines discales des bâtonnets et des cônes a éte retrouvée dans cette espèce.

Telodendrial contacts between foveolar cone pedicles in the human retina

The synaptic pedicles of foveolar cones in the human retina contact each other by means of telodendrial processes. Thus direct lateral coupling of photoreceptor terminals exists even in the area of highest acuity function.     

Occurrence of 5-hydroxytryptamine in chick retina

Summary 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was found in chick retina. 5-HT level in chick retina was increased by the administration of pargyline and decreased by reserpine, but remained unchanged with tryptophan.     

Interaction between 6-hydroxydopamine and rhodopsin in vivo in the rat retina

Résumé Nous avons observé que l'injection de la 6-hydroxydopamine dans l'humeur vitrée des rats adaptés à la lumière bloquait le rétablissement de la sensibilité rétinale pendant l'adaptation à l'obscurité subséquente au traitement. Il est possible que cette observation soit une conséquence de la réaction du produit de l'oxydation de la 6-hydroxydopamine avec les groupes nucléophiliques de la rhodopsine.

Effects of iodoacetate on the histology of the chick retina

Résumé Le monoïodoacetate de sodium injecté à des poulets par voie intraveineuse en une dose unique de 40 mg/kg, provoque des lésions très précoces dans toutes les couches cellulaires de la rétine. Une dégénérescence plus ou moins complète survient 6 à 7 jours après l'injection. On peut conclure que le poulet présente une sensibilité au monoïodoacetate plus grande que celle des mammifères precédemment étudiés (lapin, chat, macaque).
