Cultural Effects on Language in Use——A Comparison between Chinese and English

Language is the presentation of culture,and culture is expressed through the actual use of language.This paper analyses the differences between Chinese and English language from a pragmatic perspective resulted from the cultural differences between China and the Western countries.

English and Chinese have their respective word formations,as they are from different language families.A comparison between the two different languages show the similarities in the forms and meanings of their affixes while their differences are obvious.     

EFL Learning in China and the Acquisition of Culture of English-speaking Countries

This thesis is a study on the close relationship between EFL Learning in China and the acquisition of culture of English-speaking countries. First,it analyses the inticate relationship between language and. cultrue,then the causes of typical cultural mistakes made by EFL learners in China , and the goals of acquisition of culture of English ?speaking countries. Lastly, this paper puts forward four tenta tive approaches to this culture acquisition in EFL learning in China.

English language,to some extent,reflects a sexist society.Linguistic directions of degrading and devaluing female can be located everywhere.This paper tries to investigate linguistic sexism against women in English words.The purpose is to disclose some of the features of English language that suggest cultural biases and socially unjust attitudes towards women.The study will help us to have a better understanding of the relationship between language and society.     

LITERATURE AND THE TEACHING OF LANGUAGE

Chinese students learning English face a number of problems resulting from their isolation from the target language. One problem is that they are not exposed to the varieties of expression within the English language. This makes it difficult, for example, for them to distinguish between formal and informal English.     

Justification of Chinese Shi as a Copula ＆ English Copular Sentences under Cross Linguistic Influence

Second language acquisition is a broad topic.Therefore,I narrow it into those of cross linguistic influence.I choose copular usage for my focus of study because both Mandarin Chinese and English share this grammatical morpheme.To what extent do Copulas behave similarly between languages？ This facilitates positive transfer of the first language（L1） features into the second language（L2） as Eric Kellerman（1986） observed that learners have intuitions about which language features they can transfer from their first language to the target language and which are less likely to be transferable.He further proposed that learners have a sense of what features in their L1 are in some way basic.They are more prepared to risk transferring such features than they are those they perceive to be unique to their own language.The copula is a very basic grammatical morpheme as it carries most conjugated forms.Therefore,in this dissertation,I am going to examine how Chinese Shi functions as an English copula and how it influences copular sentences in English writing.

From the relationship between culture and language,we know language is a carrier of culture;each nation has its own distinctive culture.Through comparing cultural connotation between Chinese characters and English words,we know it is more important for us to master the cultural connotation of words than just knowing their spelling and pronouncing.Only under this condition,we can use English properly and freely.

Is It Practical to Adopt Communicative Language Teaching in China

The Old English Dialects

Old English was not an entirely uniform language. Not only are there differences between the language of the earliest written records (about A.D. 700) and that of the later literary texts, but the language differed somewhat from one locality to another. Four Principal dialects were spoken in Anglo-Saxon England: Kentish, West Saxon, Mercian, and Northumbrain.
