Summary A number of basically substituted benzimidazoles show a strong analgesic activity in mice, rats, rabbits, and dogs. Qualitatively they act very similarly to morphine and corresponding synthetic analgetics and the most active of these compounds are quantitatively superior to all analgetics hitherto described.

Summary Equimolecular amounts of an aromatic or hetero-cyclic aldehyde, glyoxal and cyanideion combine in slightly alkaline aqueous solution to give 4-aryl-2-hydroxytetronimides (I). These are cyclic reductones comparable to imino-ascorbic acid. Oxidation yields dehydro compounds (III) (4-aryl-2, 3-dioxo-4-hydroxy-butyric acid lactones); hydrolysis gives 4-aryl-2-hydroxy-tetronic acids (V) which are easily decarboxylated to -aryl-lactic acids (VII). On hydrogenation, the compounds I are converted to -aryl-, -dihydroxy-butyramides.

Summary Purified elastase prepared by adsorption on synthetic zeolite in proper concentrations causes the coagulation of blood. Elastase was found to have no direct coagulative action on purified fibrinogen. Its coagulating action is due to the fact that it reacts with prothrombin to form thrombin. The reaction between prothrombin and elastase is independent of the presence of either platelets, thromboplastin or Ca-ions.

Über die Wirkung blutzuckersenkender Sulfonylharnstoffe auf das isolierte Rattenzwerchfell

Summary The action of blood sugar depressing sulfonylureas on glucose and oxygen uptake, as well as on glycogen content and formation of C¹⁴O₂ from uniformly labelled C¹⁴-glucose was investigated in rat hemidiaphragms incubated in phosphate buffer. The following results were obtained: (1) Tolbutamide and Carbutamide increased the glucose uptake. (2) Tolbutamide decreased the glycogen-content. (3) Oxygen uptake as well as formation of C¹⁴O₂ were increased by Tolbutamide. (4) The action of Tolbutamide and insuline was equal with respect to glucose uptake but different as regarding the glycogen content, oxygen uptake and CO₂-formation.It is concluded that sulfonylureas increase glucose oxidation in the rat hemidiaphragm probably without increasing insulin sensitivity. To our knowledge this mechanism of action has hitherto not been described.

Summary Rats injected intraperitoneally with colchicin, 35–50 per 100 g daily or every second day, were infected experimentally on 10th day with Nocardia asteroides, Nocardia Leishmani or Torula histolytica. Controls received no colchicin. Animals given colchicin showed diffusion of infection with numerous mycotic granulomes, similar to the results obtained with cortison.

Über die Wirkung von Cobalt-II-nitrat auf Kern und Cytoplasma vonAcetabularia mediterranea

Summary The effect of Cobalt-II-nitrate was tested on the marine green algaAcetabularia. Application of Co immediately stopped regeneration as well as synthesis of cytoplasmic proteins. Later on a decrease of the protein contents was observed. Without affecting the size of the nucleus, Co caused a reduction of the nucleolar size and shape within 4 days. By histochemical methods, Co was found to be stored in the nucleus and nucleolus. However, it is not clear whether the Co was already boundin vivo. Size and distribution of the polyphosphate bodies were not changed within 6 days. No storage of Coin vivo could be observed within the polyphosphates.

Summary It is shown that the dye gallocyaninchromalum combines quantitatively with ribonucleic acid. 1 molecule gallocyanin is equivalent to approximately 15 phosphorus atoms. The quantitative combinationin vitro is not disturbed by proteins.

Summary Using series of different reactions it has been possible to demonstrate that the tricarboxylic acid arising from anthranilic acid and pyruvic acid has not the constitution I but is correctly represented by IV. Several derivatives of this tricarboxylic acid were shown to have formulae that are in sharp contrast to those found in literature.

Summary Condensation of benzil with two monosubstituted guanidines in the presence of 50 mol% of potassium hydroxide leads to the formation of 2-(subst. imino)-4, 4-diphenyl-imidazolidin-5-ones (Ia, b); by reduction of the potassium hydroxide used the formation of these products is more or less driven back in favour of the formation of 3-substituted 5, 5-diphenyl-glycocyamidines (Ic, d). A possible explanation for these orientation phenomena is given.
