Summary A sesquiterpene isolated from the roots ofAristolochia indica (Linn.) was found to exert 100% interceptive activity and 91.7% anti-implantation activity in mice at a single oral dose of 100mg/kg b. wt. No toxic effect was found at the dose levels used.The authors wish to thank Dr S. C. Pakrashi and his associate Mr P. P. Summary Wild-type strains and auxotrophic mutants ofAspergillus flavus, differing regarding aflatoxin production, were tested for esterases isozymes. Esterases variation was found in all strains used, and a possible correlation between the pattern of esterase bands and aflatoxin production is suggested.Acknowledgment. Summary The gene encoding for the phosphotriesterase (opd) fromPseudomonas diminuta has been subcloned into a baculovirus expression system. Functional enzyme is produced when the recombinant baculovirus is used to infect either culturedSpodoptera frugiperda sf9 cells or the larval stage of the fall armyworm. The LD50 for paraoxon toxicity was found to increase 280-fold in the larvae after infection with the recombinant baculovirus and expression of the functional phosphotriesterase.This work was supported by the Army Research Office (DAAL03-87-K-0017) and the Texas Advanced Technology Program. Summary Acetaldehyde is used as an energy source and attracts larvae up to low concentrations where it becomes a stress and a larval repellant, inD. melanogaster, D. simulans, andD. immigrans. This result is expected, since acetaldehyde is an intermediary compound between ethanol and acetic acid, both of which are utilized as resources and attract larvae to varying thresholds according to species and genotype.We thank Jan Clarke for assistance, and the Australian Research Grants Committee for partial financial support.  相似文献

Summary Treatment of post-feeding larvae of the cabbage maggotDelia radicum with methoprene did not affect the capacity of the insect to pupate, but suppressed eclosion to the adult stage. The concentration of hemolymph trehalose was significantly decreased by methoprene treatment, although hemolymph protein and amino nitrogen levels were unaffected.19 December 1986The authors are grateful to D. Summary The crude petroleum ether, chloroform and alcoholic extracts of the roots ofAristolochia indica (Linn.) showed 100% interceptive activity in mature female mice at the single dose of 100 mg/kg body wt. The follow-up studies with the chloroform extract showed the most significant effect in the basic part and two acidic fractions at the single dose levels of 50 mg/kg body wt. Summary Severala-pyrones have been synthesized and investigated for their in vitro inhibitory activity usinga-chymotrypsin (a-CT), porcine pancreatic elastase, (PPE) and human leukocyte elastase (HLE). 4-Hydroxy-6-undecyl-2H-pyran-2-one4, 4-Hydroxy-6-[(1-butyl)heptyl]-2H-pyran-2-one5 and 4-Methoxy-6-[(1-butyl)heptyl]-2H-pyran-2-one6 were found to be specific inhibitors of HLE. These compounds constitute a promising new class of HLE inhibitors.Acknowledgments. Summary The fungicide dithane Z-78 (zinc ethylene bisdithiocarbamate) has been found to be an inhibitor of growth and heterocyst differentiation inNostoc muscorum. Its inhibitory effect has been reversed by exogenous glucose. Summary Single muscle fibers from the barnacleBalanus nubilus have been used as a preparation to see if a synthetic 20-residue PKI (5-24)-peptide is able to block or reverse the stimulatory response of the ouabain-insensitive Na efflux to injected cAMP. The results obtained show that this peptide behaves as a powerful inhibitor of the cAMP-mediated response and is also able to partially reverse the sustained stimulation of the Na efflux observed in ouabain-poisoned fibers following the injection of subunit A of cholera toxin.Warmest thanks to Prof. E. Summary Production of aggregation pheromones by maleOryzaephilus surinamensis, O. mercator, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, andTribolium castaneum was enhanced by feeding on methoprene-treated oats, implicating juvenile hormone in control of pheromone production. Methoprene application to control insects in stored food products may cause enhanced pheromone production by these insects, thus drawing additional beetles into the treated product.Acknowledgments. Summary Analysis of field population data showed that host-seeking larvae of the tickBoophilus microplus were less successful in attaching to their hosts when larval densities were high. Experimental results showed that cattle hosts detected and avoided high densities of larvae in pasture. The finding reveals a previously unknown population-regulating mechanism for ticks, which are important pests of livestock.Acknowledgment. The authors wish to thank G. Maywald, D. Stegeman, R.
