Summary (1)Ellobius lutescens andMicrotus oregoni show the same type of sex-chromosomes. The diploid number is odd in both sexes, seventeen.(2) The odd element ofEllobius is morphologically alike in the male and in the female. InM. oregoni, the odd element of the male is acrocentric, that of the female metacentric.(3) Following a hypothesis ofWhite, it seems very probable that the heterochromosome of the male is built of the primitiveY (short arm) and the primitiveX (long arm) linked together. In the female of the same species (M. oregoni), the sex-chromosome represents both theX fused together.(4) Only the half of the Zygotes may develope, the other half being lethal.(5) The close kinship betweenEllobius andM. oregoni is certain, a parallel evolution appearing as highly improbable.  相似文献

The chirality of l-/dl-leucine (50–50%) cooligomerization was investigated in liquid and frozen aqueous solutions. Cooligomerization was carried out by carbonyldiimidazole activation without initiator at an ambient (+22°C) and frozen (−18°C) temperature, respectively. The separated samples obtained after different time intervals of treatment were completely hydrolyzed (HCl) and the diastereomeric l- and d-leucine derivates of Marfey's reagent (1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-l-alanine amide) were then traced and evaluated by RP-HPLC analysis. After 9 days of oligomerization, the l-Leu content was slightly enhanced in the liquid (57%) and somewhat more enhanced in the frozen (64%) samples. After 17 days, however, the l-Leu content had decreased in the liquid (53%) and frozen (56%) conditions. These l-enantiomer amplifications indicate that an l-antipode is preferentially incorporated into the α-helical turn of the oligomer in the earlier stage of cooligomerization, while, later, the d-antipode is also incorporated. The role of ice in the improved stereoselection is discussed. This is the first recorded example of the effect of freezing on stereoselection. Summary (1) The present paper deals with the chromosomial cytology of 11 species and underspecies ofMuridae. (2) The diploïd number being the same (2N=42), there are striking differences between two species ofBandicota, B. indica showing about 20 big metacentric chromosomes which are lackingB. bengalensis. (3)Meriones blackleri is characterized by 72 chromosomes, the species previously described possessing either 44 or 60 elements. (4) The study ofPhenacomys ungava confirms the view that 56 (54) is the primitive number in theMicroti. There is an interesting parallelism between the morphological and the cytological data. (5) A missing link betweenMicroti andEllobii has been found inMicrotus oregoni which possesses 17 chromosomes, its digamety belonging to the typeX-O, X-X. (6) Owing to the fact thatM. oregoni is more fossorial than the otherMicrotus, it is a morphological intermediate betweenMicroti andEllobii. (7) The genusChilotus (Baird) is also fully valid.  相似文献

Low (0°–4°C) and high (40°–48°C) temperatures to which two scales insects:Saissetia coffeae (Walker) andCoccus hesperidum L. (Homoptera: Coccidae) were subjected, before exposure to the encyrtidMetaphycus aff.stanleyi (Compere), reduced egg encapsulation of the parasitoid in the two hosts. Consequently the mass rearing ofM. aff.stanleyi was greatly improved.  相似文献

Summary The mechanism of the in vitro inhibition of Ca2+-, phosphatidylserine-dependent protein kinase C (PK-C)2 by the purifiedholo (ligand-saturated) forms of cellular retinol-binding protein (cRBP) and cellular retinoic acid-binding protein (cRABP) was studied. We report here that i) the PK-C-inhibitory action ofholo-cRBP andholo-cRABP is due to their respective ligands, all-trans-retinol and all-trans-retinoic acid; ii) the reduced phosphorylation of theholo-retinoid-binding proteins and brain cytosolic proteins is not the result of a retinoid-induced soluble phosphatase or protease activity; iii) retinoids reduce PK-C affinity for calcium and phosphatidylserine in vitro; and iv) the structure-function activity of the retinoids and the specific interaction of these effect of retinoids on plasma membrane-associated PK-C activity pays a significant role in defining the early epigenetic aspects of PK-C-dependent tumor promotion and may be a physiological mechanism by which retinoids induce terminal differentiation in cell types that do not express soluble retinoid-binding proteins. We would like to thank Dr L.M. De Luca (NIH, USA) for his contribution of retinylphosphate, Dr H.N. Bhagavan (Hoffmann-La Roche) for his contribution of the arotinoids, and Merrill-Dow Corp. for their contribution of difluoromethylornithine. Summary In the Corpus Aristotelicum are numerous items suggesting that the assertion of the fifth postulate in Euclid's Elements had been preceded by attempts to demonstrate this postulate itself, or some equivalent fundamental proposition, within the rigorous frame of Absolute Geometry in Bolyai's sense. Thus geometers contemporary with Aristotle tried to solve the problem which became known commonly in later centuries as the Problem of Parallels.Probably these geometers first attempted a direct solution. Only one text at our disposal supports this hypothesis: (1) Anal. Prior. 65 a 4–7. My analysis below in Chapter I shows that a mathematical meaning can be read from this somewhat obscure text only if it is interpreted as an allusion by Aristotle to those geometers who believe they are demonstrating, obviously in an absolute way, the proposition Elem. I 29, equivalent to the fifth postulate, but do not realize that in the process they are using lemmas which result themselves from the proposition to be demonstrated. Such a lemma would assert the uniqueness of the parallels, existence of which was shown in an absolute way in Elem. I 27. My conjecture and reconstruction afford a natural explanation for an inconsequence singular for Book I of the Elements, namely, the presence of the proposition Elem. I 31 in the purely Euclidean part of the book, in spite of the fact that the assertion merely repeats the absolute proposition Elem. I 27 without explicitly containing any Euclidean element. It is probable that the failure of these direct attempts led to an indirect approach to the problem through reductio ad absurdum of some hypothesis contrary to what was to become Postulate V or to some equivalent proposition. Numerous texts survive from which it is clear that geometers contemporary with Aristotle followed fairly far the consequences of an hypothesis contrary to the fifth postulate, obtaining important results which are partly identical with some theorems of Saccheri. Some of these texts attest first of all that what Saccheri called the Hypothesis of the Obtuse Angle had been stated in an independent and explicit way and that the fundamental result, identical with Prop. 14 of Saccheri's Euclides ab omni naevo vindicatus (1733), had been obtained, namely, that within Bolyai's Absolute Geometry this hypothesis leads to the remarkable formal contradiction that parallels intersect. This conclusion followed from two different formulations of the Obtuse Angle Hypothesis: (2) Anal. Prior. 66a 11–14, if the exterior angle (formed by a secant which intersects two parallel straight lines) is smaller than the interior angle (opposite and situated on the same side of the secant), and (3) 66a 14–15, if the sum of the angles in a triangle is greater than 2R. Finally, an item in (4) Ethica ad Eudemum 1222b 35–36 shows us that by investigating the Obtuse Angle Hypothesis, the Greek geometers also discovered the quadrilateral in which the sum of the angles is equal to 8R; this quadrilateral, which does not appear even in Saccheri's book, is the maximal quadrilateral of the Riemann geometry, a quadrilateral degenerated into a straight line closed upon itself (Chapter IV 20).Nowhere in the Corpus does the Hypothesis of the Acute Angle appear in an independent formulation. Nevertheless in (5) Anal. Poster. 90a 33–34 this Hypothesis is mentioned along with the other two: namely, Aristotle states that the essence of the triangle consists in the sum of its angles' being equal to, greater than or less than 2R (Chapter V 27). The formulation of the fifth postulate in the Elements allows greater probability to the conjecture of independent existence of the Acute Angle Hypothesis as well. Indeed, in its original formulation the fifth postulate is redundant, since it unnecessarily specifies in which of the half-planes (bounded by the secant) the intersection of the two straight lines occurs; this specification is itself a theorem. The Acute Angle Hypothesis must have been formulated not only symmetrically to (3) Anal. Prior. 66 a 14–15, that is, the sum of the angles of the triangle is less than 2R, as results from (5) Anal. Poster. 90 a 33–34, but also symmetrically to (2) Anal. Prior. 66 a 11–14. In the latter case the following final conclusion should have been reached in order to reduce to absurdity the Acute Angle Hypothesis: Two straight lines cut by a secant are incident if the sum of the interior angles (on the same side of the secant) is smaller than 2R, and the incidence occurs on that side of the secant where the sum of the angles is less than 2R. In the frame of the Acute Angle Hypothesis, this end conclusion is relevant only if this final specification (concerning the half-plane where the incidence occurs) is explicitly emphasised. According to my conjecture, it was precisely the practical impossibility of reaching this conclusion as a theorem of Absolute Geometry that later determined Euclid to transpose this decisive end conclusion from the Acute Angle Hypothesis, without changing its wording, and to include it among the postulates (Chapter II 13).A queer passage of Proklos (In primum Euclidis Elementorum, ed. Friedlein p. 368, 26–369, 1) in which the Acute Angle Hypothesis is presented in the form of a Zenonian paradox reinforces the conjecture that this hypothesis was studied independently by the ancient geometers (Chapter VI 33). Thus failure to solve the Problem of Parallels preceded not only the later Non-Euclidean geometry but also Euclidean geometry itself. The general undifferentiated Contra-Euclidean Hypothesis appears in the following form in all the other texts examined: The sum of the angles in the triangle is not equal to 2R. This hypothesis is nowhere qualified by Aristotle as being absurd or impossible: On the contrary, he takes it always as being just as much justified a priori as is the Euclidean theorem Elem. I 32 which contradicts it. For instance in (6) Anal. Poster. 93 a 33–35 Aristotle puts the problematical alternative: Which of the two propositions is right (or, which of the two constitutes the Logos, the raison d'être of the triangle), the one that states that the sum of the angles in the triangle is equal to 2R, or on the contrary, the one that states that the sum of the angles in the triangle is not equal to 2R (Chapter V 28)?In a number of texts the theorem Elem. I 32 itself and the general Contra-Euclidean Hypothesis are treated as being a sort of principle, and stress is laid on the idea that the logical consequences of each of these items invariantly preserve its specific (Euclidean or non-Euclidean) geometrical content [(7) 1187 a 35–38 (Chapter IV 18); (8) 1222 b 23–26 (Chapter IV 19); (9) 1187 b 1–2 (Chapter IV 18); (10) 1222 b 41–42 Chapter IV 21); (11) 1187 b 2–4 (Chapter IV 18)]; (12) Physica 200 a 29–30: If the sum of the angles in the triangle is not equal to 2R, then the principles of geometry cannot remain the same (Chapter V 25); (13) Metaph. 1052 a 6–7: It is impossible that the sum of the angles in the triangle be sometimes equal to 2R and sometimes not equal to 2R (Chapter V 24). Finally, the most important item of this sort is to be found in (14) De Caelo 281 b 5–7: If we accept as a starting hypothesis that it is impossible for the sum of the angles in the triangle to be equal to 2R, then the diagonal of the square is commensurable with its side (Chapter III).Another group of texts reveal Aristotle's attitude as regard these Contra-Euclidean theorems: (15) 1222 b 38–39 (Chapter IV 20); (16) 200 a 16–19 (Chapter VI 30); (17) 402 b 18–21 (Chapter VI 31); (18) 171 a 12–16 (Chapter VI 32); (19) 77 b 22–26 (Chapter V 26); (20) 101 a 15–17 (Chapter VI 31); (21) 76 b 39–77 a 3 (Chapter VI 31). These passages reveal Aristotle's conviction that these paradoxical Contra-Euclidean propositions (which cannot be annihilated by reductio ad absurdum) are nevertheless inacceptable as bad, probably because their graphical construction requires curved lines for representing the concept of straight lines. Finally, another group of texts show that Aristotle sensed in a way the necessity of adding to the foundations of Geometry a new postulate, from which the proposition Elem. I 32 should follow rigorously.

This paper derives the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) for an unbalanced panel data model. Starting with a simple error component regression model with unbalanced panel data and random effects, it generalizes the BLUP derived by Taub (Journal of Econometrics, 1979, 10, 103–108) to unbalanced panels. Next it derives the BLUP for an unequally spaced panel data model with serial correlation of the AR(1) type in the remainder disturbances considered by Baltagi and Wu (Econometric Theory, 1999, 15, 814–823). This in turn extends the BLUP for a panel data model with AR(1) type remainder disturbances derived by Baltagi and Li (Journal of Forecasting, 1992, 11, 561–567) from the balanced to the unequally spaced panel data case. The derivations are easily implemented and reduce to tractable expressions using an extension of the Fuller and Battese (Journal of Econometrics, 1974, 2, 67–78) transformation from the balanced to the unbalanced panel data case.  相似文献

William Whewell's philosophy of scientific discovery is applied to the problem of understanding the nature of unification and explanation by the composition of causes in Newtonian mechanics. The essay attempts to demonstrate: (1) the sense in which ‘approximate’ laws (e.g. Kepler's laws of planetary motion) successfully refer to real physical systems rather than to (fictitious) idealizations of them; (2) why good theoretical constructs are not badly underdetermined by observation; and why, in particular, Newtonian forces are not conventional and (3) how empiricist arguments against the existence of component causes, and against the veracity of the fundamental laws, are flawed.  相似文献

Summary The Robertsonian polymorphism ofPitymys subterraneus involves only 1 pair of metacentric autosomes. The crosses of forms with 52, 53 and 54 chromosomes do not show any differences in their reproductive rate. So a single autosome trivalent does not affect the fecondity. Many hybrids have been obtained betweenP. subterraneus (2N=52 or 54) andP. multiplex (2N=48) with 50 or 51 chromosomes, respectively. Even with a heterogenous karyotype they are not entirely sterile. 2 progeny were produced from back-crosses. The 2 parental species seem to result from recent speciation. Only fecondation or embryogenesis occurs in crossingP. duodecimcostatus withP. subterraneus orP. multiplex. The chromosome complement of 1 hybrid embryo ofP. duodecimcostatus (2N=62)×P. multiplex (2N=48) has been studied showing 55 chromosomes.P. duodecimcostatus appears to belong to a more distant evolutionary group.  相似文献

Summary The insect anti-juvenile hormones precocene I and II (7-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran and 6,7-dimethoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H-1-benzopyran) were identified in three of nineNama (Hydrophyllaceae) species. Precocene I occurred inN. lobbii while precocene II occurred inN. hispidum, N. lobbii andN. sandwicense. N. hispidum contained the highest concentration (ca 0.5% dry weight) of precocene II, which was found in the leaves, stems, seed capsules, corolla, glandular trichomes, and seeds. In addition to the anti-juvenile hormone, insect juvenile hormone activity was detected in the organosoluble extracts ofN. rothrockii andN. sandwicense. N. sandwicense is the first plant discovered to contain compounds with both anti- and juvenile hormone activity.  相似文献

Summary Representative members in each of the four orders of Oomycetes (Phytophthora cactorum, Peronosporales;Lagenidium callinectes, L. giganteum, Lagenidiales;Saprolegnia ferax, Saprolegniales;Apodachylella completa, Leptomitales) have been examined for their ability to synthesize and polycyclize squalene-oxide (SO) to a tetracyclic product and to differentiate between cycloartenol and lanosterol metabolism to sterols.P. cactorum andL. giganteum failed to synthesize or metabolize SO, cycloartenol or lanosterol. While the other three fungi synthesized sterols via SO and lanosterol, a minor metabolism of added cycloartenol to the 4,4-desmethyl-14-methylcyclosteroid dehydropollinastanol was observed.Acknowledgment.Saprolegnia ferax-ATCC 3605 (1),Lagenidium callinectes ATCC 24973 (2),Apodachlyella completa (3) were obtained from Dr J. Summary The classification of the genusFicus has changed considerably in the course of time and is still the subject of further research and discussion. The main subdivisions in the most recent classification by Corner12 are presented together with the genera of pollinating fig wasps (Agaonidae) associated with them. These subdivisions are discussed and grouped according to morphological and functional traits, in particular in connection with the unique pollination system. Two main groups are recognized: one with only monoecious species and the other with predominantly (gyno)dioecious species. The former comprises two subgroups (Pharmacosycea andUrostigma) and the latter three, more profoundly different subgroups (Ficus, Sycidium andSycomorus). The neotropical representatives of the genus are discussed in somewhat more detail. In addition, the distribution of the genus is summarized for the three main regions of distribution; Africa, America, and Asia-Australasia. Finally the concordance between subdivisions ofFicus and those of the Agaonidae is briefly discussed.  相似文献

System-based combination weights for series r/step-length h incorporate relative accuracy information from other forecast step-lengths for r and from other series for step-length h. Such weights are examined utilizing the West and Fullerton (1996) data set-4275 ex ante employment forecasts from structural simultaneous equation econometric models for 19 metropolitan areas at 10 quarterly step-lengths and a parallel set of 4275 ARIMA forecasts. The system-based weights yielded combined forecasts of higher average accuracy and lower risk of large inaccuracy than seven alternative strategies: (1) averaging; (2) relative MSE weights; (3) outperformance (per cent best) weights; (4) Bates and Granger (1969) optimal weights with a convexity constraint imposed; (5) unconstrained optimal weights; (6) select a ‘best’ method (ex ante) by series and; (7) experiment in the Bischoff (1989) sense and select either method (2) or (6) based on the outcome of e experiment. Accuracy gains of the system-based combination were concentrated at step-lengths two to five. Although alternative (5) was generally outperformed, none of the six other alternatives was systematically most accurate when evaluated relative to each other. This contrasts with Bischoff's (1989) results that held promise for an empirically applicable guideline to determine whether or not to combine.  相似文献

Conclusions As in OspA-serotyping experiments, theB garinii group (OspA-sterotype 3–7) showed highest diversity within this internal fragment of p83/100, whereas theB. afzelii group (OspA-type 2) and theB. burgdorferi sensu stricto group (OspA-type 1) were nearly identical. Determination of the size of the PCR products as well as restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (DraI) can be used for classification into the three species ofB. burgdorferi sensu lato. Since p83/100 is chromosomally encoded, this protein might be a more stable marker for classification than the plasmid-encoded OspA. In contrast to the flagellin gene a subclassification of theB. garinii group is possible due to the diversity of the p83/100 internal fragment.  相似文献

Summary The superficial neuromasts inLeptocottus armatus (Pacific staghorn sculpin) andOligocottus maculosus (tidepool sculpin) are depressed below the rim of an epidermal collar, whereas the superficial neuromasts inPsychrolutes paradoxus (tadpole sculpin) are surrounded by a pair of hillocks. The lateral line canal system appears identical across these species, whereas the system of superficial neuromasts shows some intraspecific variation. The sand-livingLeptocottus has a more highly developed system of superficial neuromasts thanOligocottus, which lives in a rocky habitat. The present results support the correlation between lateral line system morphology and habitat features previously postulated by Dijkgraaf.  相似文献

(2) It seems that storage begins in mitochondria. (3) In the case ofMorbus Niemann-Pick, all Mitochondria of storage cells show an abnormal ultrastructure (diminuation in size, increased osmiophilia, disorder in the arrangement of cristae and membranes).

Summary Infestation of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) by the cabbage stem flea beetle (Psylliodes chrysocephala L.) leads to an overall reduction in the levels of aliphatic (alkenyl- and hydroxyalkenyl-) glucosinolates in the damaged tissue (lamina, petiole, stem) and a massive accumulation of indole glucosinolates. Whilst artificial damage (puncturing), with and without associated bacterial infection with an isolate fromP. chrysocephala, led to such accumulation, this was less than that observed in the insect-infected situation.  相似文献
