Summary Proteins were extracted by improved techniques from the hair of inbred strains of Peru, C57BL/6 and CBA/Ca mice. The extracts were characterized by amino acid analysis and high resolution polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and previously unreported strain differences were observed. Genetic analysis confirmed them.We are grateful to Dr Speakman, Dr J. Findlay and Prof. J. Summary Free amino acids were estimated quantitatively in the motor cortex from 3 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 11 control subjects. Among 7 amino acids which showed statistically significant changes, taurine was the only one which was increased constantly and most markedly in the motor cortex of all the 3 ALS cases. It was suggested that the metabolism of sulfur amino acids might be affected in comparatively early stages of ALS.Acknowledgments. The authors are grateful to Dr M. Summary Methanolic extracts ofCortinarius speciosissimus yielded a fluorescent compound which was crystallized and shown to be a cyclic polypeptide. The compound, or an analogue, has been found in most members of the genusCortinarius.The authors acknowledge the help of Dr M. Summary The concentrations of -phenylethylamine,p-tyramine,m-tyramine,m-octopamine and tryptamine in the ganglia or foot muscle ofHelix aspersa range from <0.6 to 11 ng/g.p-Octopamine levels are higher in ganglia (327 ng/g) than in foot muscle (4.1 ng/g). Dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine range from 840 to 2710 ng/g while their acid metabolites, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid range from <20 to 130 ng/g.Acknowledgments. Summary From the urine of a patient with proteinuria, the albumin protein component was isolated and compared with human serum albumin. By comparing the amino acid composition of the original proteins and their large cyanogen bromide fragments, peptide maps and N-terminal sequences of 33 amino acid residues, the identity of both proteins was shown.We wish to express our thanks to Mr L. Summary It is shown that the Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) synthesizes ascorbic acid in its kidney, suggesting that ascorbic acid synthesis started before the origin of the tetrapods.Acknowledgments. Summary Thirteen cows maintained on natural bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) were analyzed cytogenetically. The frequency of structural chromosome aberrations detected in peripheral blood cells was significantly higher when compared to that detected in animals raised on pasture containing no bracken fern. We discuss the clastogenic action of fern and its synergistic action with infection by type 2 and 4 papilloma virus in the same animals.Acknowledgments. We are grateful to Dr F. J. Benesi, Dr J. L. Summary The lysosomes of both Novikoff hepatoma and liver from Novikoff hepatoma-bearing rats were found to be relatively intact structurally, lower in acid phosphatase activity, greatly depleted in number but with nearly normal membrane integrity when compared with normal liver.Acknowledgments. Summary (Z)-[11,12d 2]-11-Hexadecenoic acid was applied topically to the pheromone gland of silkworm pupa. After eclosion, the gland components were analyzed by capillary GC-MS. (Z)-11-Hexadecenoic acid, a characteristic fatty acid of the gland, was found to be a precursor of bombykol, (Z)-11-hexadecenol and bombyk acid.We are greatful to Dr Y. Tamaki and Mr H. Summary Capacity factors in reversed-phase HPLC and distribution constants in octan-l-ol/water of N-acetyl-N-methylamino acid amides have been measured as a function of temperature. Summary Protein, total free amino acid and RNA accumulated in the silk gland of eri-silkworm decrease drastically within 2–4 days of spinning. In contrast, the fatbody presents an augmentation of total protein concentration towards the end of the spinning process. Summary Abscisic acid, a plant growth hormone, added in water to the grass diet of a grasshopper, greatly reduces the reproductive rate, as does gibberellin A3 at doses 10 times greater. Reciprocal seasonal variations in quantities of these hormones could synchronize the growth and reproduction of insects with their host plants in the field.Acknowledgments. I thank Drs J. Pickett, G. Summary The pattern of amino acids in the bile of rats differs from the pattern in the serum of these animals, since bile contains significantly greater amounts of acidic and sulphur-containing amino acids and glycine than serum, while the serum contained more basic amino acids than bile, indicating that secretion of amino acids into bile may involve specific transport processes.Acknowledgments. Summary An endogenous cytoplasmic protein, metallothionein (MT) apparently gave rise to radioresistance in 2 different cell lines. A dose reduction factor of 1.9 was achieved in MT-containing cells. MT accounted for a 3–4-fold increase of total sulfhydryl groups in the resistant cell strains, compared to the non-resistant lines from which they were derived. The protein is rich in cysteine (30%), an amino acid known to give radioprotection when administered exogeneously. Glutathione levels and cell-cycle phase distribution showed no marked difference between resistant and corresponding non-resistant cells.We thank Dr F. Devik, Dr L. Eldjarn and Dr E. Summary Excitatory terminals, depleted of their synaptic vesicles by stimulation at high frequency, were incubated in the radiolabelled putative neurotransmitter, L-glutamate. Quantitative electron microscope autoradiography revealed that the axoplasm of these recovering terminals had accumulated the3H L-glutamate.Acknowledgment. The authors wish to thank Dr N. M. Summary A hexadecapeptide corresponding to positions 59–74 of ubiquitin was synthesized and purified. The peptide was characterized by its mobility in TLC and electrophoresis, amino acid sequence and composition, and molar rotation. The peptide possessed approximately 40% activity compared with native ubiquitin in each of 3 biological assays in vitro: a) thymocyte induction, b) B cell induction and c) elevation of intracellular cyclic AMP levels in sarcoma 180 cells.Acknowledgments. Summary Lysine content in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L. m. Thell) was determined by a modified Udy-dye binding method and was compared with that obtained from the amino acid analyzer. The values obtained from the 2 methods were correlated and the co-efficient was found to be +0.91 at 0.450 mg/ml dye concentration. The modified method is quick, less expensive and quite helpful for screening lysine at earlier generation in wheat breeding for improved grain quality content.The author is grateful to Dr V.A.
