Zur Verbreitung von Glucobrassicin und Neoglucobrassicin in höheren Pflanzen

Summary Indoleglucosinolates were detected in seedlings of 14 species of the families Capparidaceae, Resedaceae and Tovariaceae. They contained either glucobrassicin or neoglucobrassicin, or both of them. The taxonomic and physiological significance of this broad distribution is discussed.

Summary Psophus stridulus L. andOedipoda coerulescens L. were fed or injected with solutions of Na ₂ ³⁵ SO₄ and³⁵S-l-cystine. The radioactive radiation pattern of the wings was found to depend on the time of application. Differences in radiation intensity were found to correspond to the red, blue and dark areas.

Summary The uptake of³⁵S, in the chondroitin sulfate of the costal cartilage of guinea pigs, is inhibited by cortisone, methyl-prednisolon, triamcinolon, and dexamethason. No inhibition could be seen under the influence of the natural adrenal hormone hydrocortisone and its nearest relation, prednisolon.

Summary Some unnatural sulphur amino acids can be detected in the phloem of the vascular bundles from Phaseolus vulgaris after the application of H₂ ³⁵S to the primary leaves.     

Periodicity of S35 uptake in rat femurs

Résumé Du radio-soufre a été administré intraveineusement à des rats à 09.00 h et à d'autres à 21.00 h, et ils ont été sacrifiés 2–3, 4, 8 et 12 h après l'injection. L'analyse microdensitométrique d'autoradiographies des fémurs a indiqué que la concentration et la rétention du traceur dans le cartilage de conjugaison étaient plus grandes dans les rats traités à 09.00 h. Les tissus non-cartilagineux n'ont pas montré de changements pareils.

Summary It has been found by polarographic analysis in neutral or acid solution that chalcones show two reduction potentials, while flavanones show only one.It was possible to determine 2'-hydroxy-chalcone beside flavanone with a polarograph.The formation rate of a chalcone from an aldehyde and a ketone could be followed polarographically.

Summary The macrotetralid antibiotic Dinactin uncouples phosphorylation from electron transport in illuminated chloroplasts in the presence of Na⁺ at lower concentrations than in K⁺, while the light-induced proton uptake is more inhibited in a medium with K⁺ than with Na⁺. The large volume changes of whole chloroplasts in the light and after addition of Dinactin are parallel to the amount of K⁺ in the chloroplasts.

Die Verletzung von Spiegelungs-Symmetrien in den Gesetzen der Atomphysik

Summary The reflections of charge (C), space-coordinates (P) and time (T) and, particularly in connection with the space reflection, the distinction between polar vector and axial vector, scalar and pseudoscalar products are explained. The three different kinds of strong, medium (electromagnetic) and weak interactions are introduced. While the first two of them fulfil all reflection invariances mentioned separately,Lee andYang showed (1956) that for the weak interactions no sufficient empirical evidence existed for the reflection invariances, and they also suggested experiments for checking them.The qualitative aspect of the experimental results available in November 1957, which show the violation of theC- and theP-invariance for weak interactions, is reviewed. The methods hereby applied are betadecay of oriented nuclei, polarisation of emitted electrons in beta-decay, beta-gamma-correlation, asymmetry in the decay of -mesons generated by -meson-decay. The solution of the --puzzle by the assumption of a single particle (K-meson) without defined parity is mentioned.In the concluding section, some aspects of the unsolved theoretical problems of the deeper reasons for the symmetry violations of the weak interactions are briefly discussed which will possibly also lead into open cosmological questions.

Summary Experiments on rats revealed that liver damage caused by allyl alcohol (measured by the rate of necrosis) is enhanced by alcoholic beverages such as ethanol and European or hybride wine. In this respect, wine seems to cause more damage than mere alcohol.     

Die Wirkung von Progesteron und Progesteronmetaboliten auf das Wachstum von embryonalem Knorpel in vitro

Summary Embryonic chick bones were cultured in vitro in the presence of progesterone and of a series of progesterone metabolites. It was found that only 5-pregnane-3,20-dione, 3-hydroxy-5-pregnane-20-one, and ⁴-pregnene-20-ol-3-one influence the growth of bones in vitro in a manner similar to progesterone. All other investigated progesterone metabolites exert either a different or no demonstrable action on bone growth.     

Distribution of S35-sodium sulfate in early chick embryos

Résumé La distribution du radiosulfate introduit dans les embryons de poulet de 3 jusqu'à 7 jours a été étudiée par l'autoradiographie de contraste. Il existe des différences marquées dans la fixation du S³⁵ au niveau des ébauches d'organes différents et même dans les diverses parties de chaque tissu. Ces différences sont particulièrement remarquables entre les divers dérivés du mésoderme et elles s'accentuent pendant la différenciation ultérieure.     

Die Speicherung von Blutproteinen in den Histiozyten nach vorhergehender Histamineinwirkung

Summary By means of their special histological method, the storage of plasma proteins in the histiocytes was studied by the authors in rats and mice. If injected subcutaneously, both homologous and heterologous serum proteins were stored to the same extent at the site of the injection by the histiocytes of the connective tissue.After smearing the skin with histamine or after subcutaneous injection of histamine, intensive storage of protein occurs locally in the histiocytes. Because of the effect of histamine increasing permeability, these cells accumulate in their body the plasma proteins abundantly escaping from the blood stream.Even under physiological conditions, plasma proteins are constantly taken up and destroyed by the reticuloendothelial cells and this function has a fundamental biological importance.
