Intracolonial worker relationship and sperm competition in the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.)

Summary Queens, homozygous for three marker genes, were inseminated with eight different types of semen, each carrying one combination of the markers. Intracolonial worker relationship (_c) was estimated by genotype frequencies in the offspring of the experimental queens. _c was larger than under random distribution of semen types in the spermatheca. Estimates of most quantitative genetical parameters will be more accurate using the presented estimator for intracolonial relationship. The insemination order affected genotype frequencies in the offspring, suggesting a weak last male advantage. There was, however, no evidence of intra spermathecal sperm competition.

Changes in the lumen of coronary vessels under oligemic hypotension

Conclusions The decrease of circulating blood volume, resulting in oligemic hypotension, may evoke in anaesthetized cat the active constrictory coronary vessel responses of 2 types, one occuring immediately after start of the hypotension and the other having a significantly prolonged latency.

Summary On the basis of comparative chemical and spectral data, the structure of the major saponin, luzonicoside, from the starfishEchinaster luzonicus has been elucidated as2. This is a further example of a novel class of steroidal cyclic glycoside from starfish of the genusEchinaster. Its structure includes a ⁷, 3,6-dioxygenated-23-oxosteroidal moiety, already found in the saponins ofEchinaster sepositus, and a trisaccharide moiety, -D-galactopyranosyl-(12) -L-arabinopyranosyl-(12)--D-glucuronopyranosyl, bridging C-3 and C-6 of the steroid.This contribution is part of the Progetto Finalizzato Oceanografia e Fondi Marini del C.N.R., Roma.Acknowledgments. Can we predict the mating pattern ofDrosophila females from the sperm length distribution in males?

Summary In order to test the validity of the prediction of the mating pattern of females from the sperm length distribution in males, three species ofDrosophila were analysed. Males in the three species are equally polygynous but females differ in the level of polyandry. A low recurrence polyandry is observed in the sperm dimorphic speciesD. affinis while a high recurrence polyandry is observed in the sperm monomorphic speciesD. latifasciaeformis andD. littoralis. These results are consistent with the hypothesis proposed previously that sperm dimorphism in males can only be maintained by a selective alternative in females (i.e. facultative female polygamy), whereas a stricter mating system (e.g., obligatory polyandry) should only result in sperm monomorphism irrespective of the absolute value of sperm length.

Effect of dipyridamole on glomerular mesangial cell ecto-5′-nucleotidase expression

Although dipyridamole has been extensively studied as an anti-aggregating agent, its mechanism of action has not been elucidated. Cultured mesangial cells were treated with dipyridamole 1–100 M from 6–72 h. Ecto-5-nucleotidase activity approximately doubled (from 115±11 to 226±14 nmol/min/mg) after treatment with 100 M dipyridamole for 72 h. This effect was concentration- and time-dependent. Cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis, did not alter basal 5-nucleotidase activity. However, it prevented stimulation by 5 M dipyridamole. Adenosine availability at the receptor sites was increased by dipyridamole and S-(p-nitrobenzyl)-6-thioinosine (NBTI), which inhibit adenosine uptake into the cell. Addition of dipyridamole or NBTI to the adenosine-treated mesagial cells produced an additive increase in ecto-5-nucleotidase activity. Dipyridamole, through its effect on extracellular adenosine and ecto-5-nucleotidase, may have an influence upon regulation of the glomerular microcirculation.
