Enhancement of serum FSH levels after pinealectomy

The effect of pinealectomy on the circadian periodicity in serum gonadotropins was investigated in adult male rats. Pinealectomy resulted in an elevation of the serum FSH concentration 7 days after the operation. A 4-fold increase in serum FSH over 24 h with no concommitant increase in serum LH following pinealectomy suggests that the control of FSH secretion could be mediated via the pineal gland.     

Influence of pinealectomy on serum estrogen and progesterone levels in blind-anosmic female rats

Summary Previous studies show that the suppression of gonadal function in blind-anosmic rats is dependent on the pineal gland. The present results demonstrate that in young female rats both the pineal gland and dual sensory deprivation have additional independent antigonaldal effects.This work was partially supported by state institutional funds and by NSF grant No. PCM 74-06276-276-A02. The effect of pinealectomy on serum progesterone and oestradiol levels during the last stage of pregnancy in rats

Summary Pinealectomy leads to significantly higher levels of progesterone (on days 19 and 20 of gestation) and oestradiol (on days 21 and 22) in the serum of pregnant rats. These results indicate that during the last phase of pregnancy the pineal gland may be modifying the levels of gonadal hormones, although not affecting the sequence of the physiological events.Acknowledgment. Comparison between serum LH and FSH levels in male and female rats during the perinatal period]

In the newborn female Rat, no transient LH and FSH serum surges were observed between 0 and 2 hrs., as compared with the newborn male. In the newborn female, a progressive increase in serum gonadotropins was observed between 2 and 6 hrs. These results indicate that, at birth, the pituitary-gonadal axis reacts in a different way in male and female Rats.     

Familial association in serum IgE levels

Summary The serum IgE levels measured by RIST correlated closely with those obtained by the single radioimmunodiffusion method. Values for husband and wife were closely related as were those between father and daughter but in contrast to previous observations no significant relationship existed between IgE levels for mother and son.Acknowledgments. Sensory deprivation produced by removing the eyes and olfactory bulbs in male rats allowed pinealectomy to markedly augment the post-adrenalectomy elevation of ACTH levels. Pineal removal or sensory deprivation separately did not have this effect. Thus, intact sensory input and an intact pineal gland are independently capable of restricting the post-adrenalectomy rise in ACTH levels.

A new technique of pinealectomy for adult rats

Summary A new technique of pinealectomy for rats is described which brings the pineal into view of the experimenter facilitating its removal and also allows for completely parallel sham operations.Acknowledgments. Effect of menstrual stress on serum lipid levels

Summary The effect of menstrual stress on serum lipid levels has been investigated in 28 healthy unmarried student nurses aged between 19 and 25 years, with histories of regular 26–30 day menstrual cycles. There were definite and similar patterns of changes in serum cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides during different phases of the menstrual cycle.The authors acknowledge with pleasure the useful discussion with Dr Radium D. Correlation ofβ-lipoprotein levels and serum cholesterol concentration

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe der immunologischen Methode wurden der-Lipoproteinspiegel wie auch der Serum-, Cholesterol- und Triglyceridspiegel von 161 Erwachsenen bestimmt. Der Gehalt an Cholesterol und Triglyceriden stand in direktem Verhältnis zum-Lipoproteinwert, wobei jedoch Unsicherheit in der Voraussage der Hypercholesterolaemie auf Grund der Hypertriglyceraemie besteht.     

Age dependent variation of serum creatine phosphokinase levels in pigs

Zusammenfassung Infolge Muskeltätigkeit steigt bekanntlich der Creatin-Phosphokinase-Spiegel (CPK) im Serum. Es wird nun eine Abhängigkeit des Serum-CPK-Wertes vom Alter festgestellt. Es ist daher wichtig, nichtspezifische Ursachen eines gesteigerten CPK-Spiegels auszuschalten, ehe eine Diagnose der Muskelerkrankung gestellt wird.

Effects of chondroitin polysulfate on thrombus-formation and serum lipid levels

Zusammenfassung Chondroitinpolysulfat führt nach i.v. Injektion bei Kaninchen kurzfristig zu Verlängerung der Thrombusbildungszeit und zu einer Verminderung des Thrombusgewichtes. Möglicherweise besteht eine Beziehung zwischen der Hemmung der Thrombusbildung und der reduzierenden Wirkung von Chondroitinpolysulfat auf Serum Triglyzerid.     

Citrullinemia: Elevated serum citrulline levels in healthy siblings

Zusammenfassung Die Familienuntersuchung eines 3. Falles von Citrullinaemie spricht für eine autosomal heterozygote Vererbung. Die Merkmalsträger können durch eine einfache Nüchternserum-Bestimmung des Citrullins von den nicht betroffenen Familienmitgliedern abgegrenzt werden.
