Inherited semisterility for control of harmful insects. V. Translocations inCulex tritaenio-rhynchus

Zusammenfassung Mit unterschiedlichen Dosen von Röntgenstrahlen wurden bei der StechmückeCulex tritaeniorhynchus chromosomale Aberrationen (vorwiegend reziproke Translokationen) produziert, die von der zweiten Tochtergeneration an einen konstanten Grad von Semisterilität zeigen. Die Mehrzahl der isolierten Linien zeigte im Durchschnitt eine Letalität von etwa 50%. Die Variationsbreite innerhalb einer Linie betrug ±10–15%. Durch cytologische Untersuchungen von Prophasechromosomen wurden die geschlechtsbestimmenden Faktoren M und m auf einem der beiden langen Chromosomen lokalisiert.     

The evolutionary history ofDrosophila buzzatii. V. Differential survivorship onOpuntia betweenD. buzzatii andD. serido

Summary Survival time ofDrosophila buzzatii adults on anOpuntia (prickly pear) medium was significantly longer than that of its nearest relativeD. serido. A significant difference was also found betweenD. buzzatii adults from two experimental populations, one of them fed onOpuntia rots for more than two years and another one kept on standardDrosophila medium for the same period of time. The rise of the tinplate industry.—V. Cockshutt on tinplate manufacture

Two laboratories which offered the new career of scientific work to women at the beginning of the twentieth century were the Biometric Laboratory and the Galton Eugenics Laboratory at University College London. The scientific careers of two women, Dr. Alice Lee (1859–1939) and Dr. Ethel Elderton (1878–1954), are examined. Intellectual and economic factors involved in the choice of a career in eugenics are described, together with some aspects of the relationship between eugenics and feminism.     

Prostaglandin-like substances inPropionibacterium acnes. V. Activity profiles using cascade superfusion bioassay and platelet aggregation

Summary The activity spectrum of prostaglandin-like substances (PLS) fromP. acnes was investigated with cascade superfusion technique and by platelet aggregation assay. The biological activity of PLS resembles that of PGI₂: both relax bovine coronary artery, rabbit mesentric and coeliac arteries; both contract the rat stomach strip as well as both typically inhibit spontaneous movements of isolated guinea pig ileum. Also, similarly to PGI₂, PLS inhibits platelet aggregation regardless the inducer used. However, PLS possesses a specific antiaggregatory pattern on platelet, which indicates that these compounds are not indentical with primary prostaglandins or PGI₂.     

Cyclic and linear vasopressin V1 and V1/V2 antagonists containing arginine in the 4-position

Summary Substitution of arginine for glutamine in the 4-position of a vasopressin V₁ antagonist has been reported to turn it into an agonist. We resynthesized this 4-arginine analog and synthesized additional cyclic and linear vasopressin antagonists containing a 4-arginine. The presence of a 4-arginine in the resynthesized and new analogs had relatively minor effects on their antivasopressin V₁ and V₂ antagonistic potencies.

Summary We have shown the recently proposed method for prediction of carcinogenicity by average quasi-valence number to be neither a good predictor of carcinogenicity, nor of non-carcinogenicity.Grants to Edward J. Summary NH₂OH as well as H₂O₂ (previous results^3,4) decompose the Cu₂₊ complex of polymyxin B as can be shown with thin layer chromatography; the spots of the peptide fragments of both reactions were compared.     

Combined surgical and radiation injury V. The effect of bone marrow transplantation

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass bei Nagern Röntgen-Ganztierbestrahlung mit 675 R während 4 Tagen vor Wundsetzung zu einer beträchtlichen Verzögerung der Wundkontraktion führt. Diese Verzögerung konnte durch eine Knochenmarktransplantation aufgehoben werden.
