Summary The maternal behavior of Roman high- and low-avoidance (RHA/Verh and RLA/Verh) rats was studied, using a time-sampling method. It was concluded that: a) RLA/Verh mothers spent more time with their young, b) RHA/Verh mothers were more active, and c) the mothers of both lines mostly blanketed their young during nursing, although the RHA/Verh mothers assumed the side-nursing position more often than their counterparts. This work was partly supported by a research grant from the Swiss Association of Cigarette Manufacturers. The binding of 3H-diazepam to membrane benzodiazepine receptors was examined in 2 psychogenetically selected lines of rats, which differ according to the selection criterion in avoidance behaviour (RHA/Verh greater than RLA/Verh) and, in addition, in emotionality (RHA/Verh less than RLA/Verh). RHA/Verh rats tended to show higher specific diazepam binding in all CNS-subregions when compared with RLA/Verh animals. Significant differences were found in the cortex, striatum, hippocampus, thalamic region and pons-medulla. These results reinforce the contention that a system involving benzodiazepine receptors may play a role in emotional behaviour.  相似文献

Roman high-avoidance (RHA/Verh) rats, food-deprived (F-D) for 5 days, had higher stomach lesion scores than did F-D Roman low-avoidance (RLA/Verh) rats. F-D RLA/Verh rats which were injected i.p. with phenylbutazone (PBZ) 24 h before examination, however, had higher scores than did PBZ-treated, F-D RHA/Verh rats. Histologically, extensive edema and cellular infiltration (including numerous erythrocytes) were seen below the lesions, in the submucosa, denoting vascular damage. An attenuating influence of food on the ulcerogenic effects of PBZ, which were much more severe in F-D than in fed rats, was also indicated.  相似文献

Bidirectional genetic selection for good and poor active avoidance learning in a shuttle box has been carried out in three independent laboratories using remarkably similar discrete-trial training procedures. The resulting strains are known as the Roman High and Low Avoidance (RHA and RLA), the Syracuse High and Low Avoidance (SHA and SLA) and the Australian High and Low Avoidance (AHA and ALA) strains, respectively. An additional unidirectionally selected strain, known as the Tokai High Avoider (THA) strain was developed in Japan using a free-operant Sidman avoidance procedure in a Skinner box. This paper reviews the selection of the Syracuse strains, enumerates the various behavioral and endocrine characteristics of the strains, and compares them to the other similarly selected strains. The behavioral work suggests that genetic selection from diverse breeding stocks has resulted in common characteristics that differentiate the strains in the emotional, not learning, domain. The endocrine data, however, are somewhat at odds. The Syracuse strains differentiate one way with respect to endocrine function, and the Roman strains differentiate in the opposite way. We suggest, therefore, that the endocrine correlates are not tightly linked to the avoidance genotype. Genetic analysis of all of the selected strains for both the avoidance phenotype and the endocrine correlates will be needed to test this hypothesis.  相似文献

Females have received from weaning a semi-synthetic diet (0,35% Ca; 0,32% P; 0,03% Mg), with or without vitamin D (+/- D). Fertility of these females was not changed. At weaning, the young from mothers--D had lower weight, calcemia and phosphatemia, but the ash content of the femur was the same as for young from mothers + D. Young rats from mothers +/- D were given the diet with or without vitamin D. 19 days after weaning, the diet of the mother (+/- D) appears to be the principal factor for growth, calcemia and the ash content of the femur; the diet of the young (+/- D) produced only slight differences between ash contents.  相似文献

Occurrence of DDT and BHC residues in human milk in India   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
R L Kalra  R P Chawla 《Experientia》1981,37(4):404-405
The presence of pesticide residue of DDT and of BHC were determined in 1979 in samples of milk from 75 lactating mothers from Punjab, within a week after delivery. DDT and BHC residues were found present in all 75 samples collected. Recovery of isomers of BHC and metabolites/isomers of p.p'-DDT from the spiked samples was above 80%. The mean level of DDT residue was 0.51 ppm, which is more than the level reported from the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, but less than the level found in Guatemala. BHC residues also were higher than those found in other countries, with the exception of Japan. DDT level of 0.5 ppm in milk represents an infant intake of 0.09 mg/kg/day, which is 18 times the acceptable daily intake (0.005 mg/kg/day) recommended by the WHO. Acceptable daily intake of BHC has not yet been established.  相似文献

The effect of treatment with acetyl-L-carnitine on hepatic mitochondrial respiration and biosynthetic function in perfused liver from young (90 days) and old (22-24 months) rats was studied. Rats were given a 1.5% (w/v) solution of acetyl-L-carnitine in their drinking water for 1 month and oxygen consumption together with the rate of gluconeogenesis, urea synthesis, and ketogenesis with and without added substrates were measured in perfused liver. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption was also assessed in liver homogenate and isolated mitochondria to determine the maximal capacity for oxidative phosphorylation. Acetyl-L-carnitine treatment almost completely restored the age-dependent decline in oxygen consumption, gluconeogenesis, urea synthesis, and ketogenesis found in perfused liver of old rats to the levels found in young rats. In addition, acetyl-L-carnitine treatment increased oxygen consumption and biosynthetic function in perfused liver from young rats. After acetyl-L-carnitine treatment, we found detectable 3-oxoacyl-CoA-transferase activity associated with a consumption of ketone bodies in young and old rats. Finally, oxygen consumption measured in homogenate and isolated mitochondria did not change with age and acetyl-L-carnitine treatment. Our results show that in perfused liver, acetyl-L-carnitine treatment slows the age-associated decline in mitochondrial respiration and biosynthetic function. In addition, treatment of young rats with acetyl-L-carnitine has a stimulating effect on liver metabolism, probably through an increase in ATP production. Summary During growth of young rats, monoamine oxidase activity in erythrocyte membrane preparations decreases more rapidly than reticulocyte concentrations in the respective blood samples. Since reticulocytes lose their mitochondria prior to the substantia reticulo-filamentosa, the non-linear correlation between monoamine oxidase activity and reticulocyte counts indicates that erythrocyte monoamine oxidase is located in reticulocyte mitochondria. This work was supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.  相似文献

Summary Males and females of Chilean strains ofDrosophila subobscura exhibit a pronounced tendency toward homogamic mating. This tendency shows a clear relation to the distance between the geographic localities from which the respective strains came. Nevertheless, when the Chilean flies are confronted with European strains, the ethological isolation is observed in some cases but not in others, depending on the geographic origin of the strains.Acknowledgments. Four reviews on the the role of developmental factors in hypertension are introduced and set in historical context. Recent research in the laboratory rat has shown that the preweaning environment makes an important contribution to the level of blod-pressure reached in adult life in genetic models of hypertension. Both of the most commonly used models of hypertension, the SHR and SS/Jr rat strains, exhibit lower BP in adult life, if they are fostered shortly after birth to mothers from their normotensive control strains. It has been suggested that it is the idiosyncratic maternal behavior of the hypertensive mothers which contributes to the elevated BP of their offspring, and it has been amply demonstrated that there is an association between a constellation of behaviors emitted by rat mothers and the adult BP of their offspring in a wide variety of genetic groups (inbred hypertensive animals, F1's and F2's). In addition to the above, maternal environment has been demonstrated to have a significant impact on the pathophysiological response of hypertensive animals to a high salt diet. Being raised by an SHR mother, versus an SS/Jr mother, increases the magnitude of BP increases to a high salt diet, susceptibility to hemorrhagic stroke, body weight loss and the risk of mortality. A variety of physiological systems are undergoing rapid change during the preweaning period and may mediate the effects of differences in the maternal environment. These include the renin-angiotensin system and the peripheral sympathetic nervous system. Nutritional factors may be involved in all of the phenomena referred to above. Thus, any physiological mechanisms that are proposed to link maternal behavior to its effects on the physiology of adult animals should recognize the involvement of nutritional factors. Research on the role of developmental factors such as maternal behavior in genetic models of hypertension is at the interface of two growing disciplines: behavior genetics and developmental psychobiology. The methodological and conceptual contributions of these fields to advancing our understanding of these phenomena is emphasized.  相似文献

Summary Physical exercise increased the activities of arylsulphatase, cathepsin D and -glucuronidase in mouse skeletal muscle but not in cardiac muscle. Exercise-induced lysosomal response was more prominent in young adult than in senescent mice. The lipofuscin content of cardiac and skeletal muscles increased markedly during ageing and was also found to increase slightly after exertion in young mice, but not in senescent ones. This study was supported by the grants from the Ministry of Education and the Academy of Finland.  相似文献

Using temperature-sensitive radio-telemeters chronically implanted in the abdomens of 8 fetal lambs and their mothers, we measured body temperature changes induced by parturition. Maternal body temperature rose at 0.70±0.06 °C/hour (mean±SEM) in the final stages of labour. Fetal body temperature also rose, but at a significantly lower rate, 0.45±0.06 °C/hour (p<0.05). The fetus appears to be protected from excessive hyperthermia during the birth process.  相似文献

Summary Early undernutrition, induced by feeding mothers a low protein (5%) diet during gestation and/or lactation, resulted in significant deficits in acetylcholine concentration in the rat brain, and these deficits were reversed by subsequent dietary rehabilitation. This research was partly supported by Nutrition Society of India Grant-in-Aid Award (79/60) to Dr A.B. To study the effect of a sudden loss of body weight on the -cell function of aging rats, basal and glucose-induced insulin secretion was measured in pancreatic islets obtained from young (2-month-old), adult (12-month-old) and aging (24-month-old) rats, either fed ad libitum or fed a restricted diet (50% caloric restriction). Basal insulin secretion was similar in islets of young, adult and older rats. Glucose stimulated insulin release was significantly reduced in aging rats as compared to young animals. Animals fed a restricted diet showed a prolonged and higher secretory rate during first phase release when compared to animals fed ad libitum.  相似文献

Summary Treatment of neonatal mice with an antiviral factor, (AVF), obtained from the leaves ofMelia azederach L. protected them against lethal encephalitis caused by Tacaribe virus inoculation. The degree of protection obtained varied from 66% to 100% depending on the virus dose. Similarly, administration of AVF to nursing mothers protected their offspring from developing virus encephalitis. AVF does not directly inactivate Tacaribe virus; it inhibits an early step (s) in the replication process in cell cultures.Dedicated to Prof. Luis Leloir on his 80th birthday.Acknowledgment. Over the past 20 years, laboratory studies of genetically defined animal models of human essential hypertension have provided valuable information on the pathophysiology of this disturbance in cardiovascular regulation. Relatively fewer studies have examined the impact of preweaning factors on the developing cardiovascular system of hypertensive animals. In our laboratory studies, we have utilized two inbred genetically hypertensive models: the spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rat and its Wistar/Kyoto (WKY) normotensive control strain as well as the Dahl hypertension-sensitive (SS/Jr) and hypertension-resistant (SR/Jr) strains. To manipulate the preweaning maternal environment, we have employed the technique of reciprocal cross-fostering of litters between hypertensive and matched normotensive mothers. Our findings to date point to the maternal environment as a powerful influence on the development of high blood pressure in genetically hypertensive rats. In general, hypertensive rats reared by normotensive foster mothers have significant reductions in arterial blood pressure in adulthood. Thus, the progression of hypertinsive disease is not strictly predtermined by genotypic factors. Rather, a genetic predisposition to hypertension interacts with preweaning environmental factors to determine an animal's cardiovascular phenotype in adulthood.  相似文献
