Until now there are a lot of critical comments on the great play itself and the main character Oedipus himself. The super hero Oedipus blinded his own eyes by his own hands at the end of the play. People showed different views on his behavior. On the basis of different views, this article is going to discuss whether Oedipus is a passive figure or an active fighter at that time.  相似文献

Charles Dickens(1812-1870) is the greatest representative of English critical realism, a classic of world literature. The greatness of Dickens lies not only in his satirical portrayal of bourgeoisie and in the exposure of the greed and hypocrisy of the upper class, but also in his profound humanitarianism, which is revealed in his sympathy for the labor people.  相似文献

William Wordsworth, the representative of the romantic writers and a great writer of the nature, has made great contribution in poetic theory. Daffodils is one of the many poems written by Wordsworth on the beauty of nature. His great imagination, with the poet's philosophical and somewhat mystical thought, is deeply rooted in the poetical creation. In this paper, his most representative poem is closely examined to appreciate how Wordsworth combines his deep love for nature and his romantic language in his great poem.  相似文献

Owing to the influences of Greek's view of fate, Dorset peasant's fatalism and Schopenhauer' s pessimistic philosophy, Hardy showed more or less a pessimistic tendency in his early writings and this tendency illustrated itself in his writing of Eustacia, heroine of The Return of the Native. He believed that Eustacia' s tragedy resulted from the disagreement between her aspiration for a brilliant life outside Egdon Heath and the fate imposed on her by some mysterious force working at odds with her. This is what the paper attempts to prove.  相似文献

Ralph Waldo Emerson, born in 19th century's America, is most famous for his transcendental ideas and writings. He was deeply influenced by European Romanticism in his thirties and formed an informal Transcendental Club with people of like minds. His thought is often considered the core of Transcendentalism. "Nature" is the fundamental document of his philosophy and an embodiment of his transcendental attitude towards the phenomenal world. He also wrote some other brilliant essays such as "The American Scholar", "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul" and "The Poet", etc, all of which established his indisputable position in the history of culture, especially in the American Culture where he is regarded as the one who, in literally terms at least, really put America on map. But considering Emerson's writings without significant emphasis on his verse would be a great loss. Emerson wrote poetry from the time he was a boy to nearly the end of his life. These poems are essential for understanding him and his transcendental theories and are receiving more extensive representation in anthologies while significant critical analyses are emerging though some modern readers and scholars tend to view his poetry as secondary to the "essential" Emerson. In view of the above, this paper supposes to introduce Emerson's views on poets and poems and then analyze some of his famous poems in the order of 'Emerson as a Poet', 'Emerson's Views on Poets and Poems' and 'Emerson's Poems' with the third one as the focus of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to try to make the comprehension on Emerson and his abstract transcendental theories more complete and thorough by emphasizing his contribution in the poetic field.  相似文献

It is regarded as the reflection of his hometown Dorset. His novel creation could be generally divided into three periods. The first period was romantic and pastoral; the masterpieces are Under the Green Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd. His second period mainly focuses on the social tragedy of Wessex, such as The Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge .In the last period of his creation, he began to write the pessimistic fate of the villagers in Wessex, this could be seen through Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. The further exploration is carried out to have a deeper understanding of King Leontes and his jealousy and violence. Autolycus, the rogue, is given a detailed avaluation so as to reveal his active role in the play and the artistic flavour on the stage. The brave and straight forward lady Paulina is held in high regard because of both of her brilliant words and benevolent actions. The fourth Act of the play is regarded as the excellent part of the play based on its rich and colourful picture of the rural life by the playwright Shakespeare. Since Hermione, the heroine, is the main character of all the main characters, and the fate of hers is the focus of the whole play, so the title of this play is in need of change.  相似文献

Under the great background of globalization today, communications between China and America are more frequent,it becomes significant for us to gain a deeper understanding of American presidents' speech.Obama serves as an example for us to study in this aspect.Until now, most people have been studying his speech mainly through either Chinese translations of his speeches or interpretations by the media, conducted through perspectives which are by no means rhetorically informed.Considering the fact that what we are dealing with is political speech,it is high time that the rhetorical perspective be introduced into the process of interpreting Obama's political communication in its original context.Such a perspective will help us obtain a better approach of interpreting his speech. This thesis has widely selected the typical political speeches of president Obama in his Election Campaign process, and analyzed three main rhetorical methods in political speech: simile, metaphor and metonymy.Figure of speech is an expression that departs from the accepted literal sense or from the normal order of words,or in which an emphasis is produced by patterns of sound. It is an especially important resource of poetry;it is also constantly present in all other kinds of speech and writing. The figure of speech is commonly used in political speech. In this part of the thesis the author will analyze three main types of figures in Obama's speech: Simile, metonymy and Metaphor.  相似文献

In his novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce minimized the position of minor characters in order to present the central posifon of the hero. This kind of characterization is closely related with Joy's aesthetics, that is Joyce's principle of "wholeness". In this paper, the close relationship between the characterization and Joyce's "wholeness" aesthetics will be discussed to prove that Joyce em- ployed his aesthetics in his art creation.  相似文献

As one of the outstanding figures in the pre-Reform Movement in the nineteenth century,Marcel was known to us by his fa-mous proposal of"reading first".However,he and his proposal were unfairly neglected by his contemporaries and his successors. In fact, thisproposal was based on a rational theory of reading: the cognitive process of reading and the distinction between impression and expression. This proposal is worth attending to afresh.  相似文献
