Cerebral ammonia production during hypoglycaemia in the newborn calf

Summary The effect of insulin hypoglycaemia on cerebral blood flow, and cerebral metabolic rates of glucose, oxygen and ammonia was investigated in the unanaesthetized newborn calf. A net loss of ammonia from the brain occurred during hypoglycaemia, and was greater in convulsing than in comatose animals.Acknowledgments. The expert assistance of Mr P.M.M. Bircham and Miss B.N. Potassium transfer from brain to blood during sustained hyponatraemia in the newborn calf

Summary The effect of dilutional hyponatraemia on cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption, and net transfer of K⁺ to the circulation from brain tissue drained by the sagittal sinus was investigated in anaesthetized calves. Cerebral blood flow decreased, and net transfer of K⁺ to the circulation increased during hyponatraemia.Acknowledgments. The expert assistance of Miss B.N. O'Connor, Miss D. McNaughton and Mr P.M.M. Renal ammonia production as a model for the study of enzyme adaptation in mammals

Zusammenfassung Chronische Verabreichung von Säure führt zu einer erhöhten Glutaminase-I-Konzentration in der Niere und zu einer gesteigerten Ammoniakausscheidung im Urin. Das ammoniakproduzierende biokatalytische System (Glutaminase I) ist besonders gut zum Studium der Enzymadaptation (Induktion) bei Säugetieren geeignet. Der Stand der Adaptation kann nicht nur durch die Bestimmung der Enzymveränderungen in der Niere, sondern auch durch den Nachweis des Reaktionsproduktes (Ammoniak) im Urin am lebenden Tier beurteilt werden.

Plasma renin concentration at delivery and during the newborn period in humans

Zusammenfassung Die Plasma-Renin-Konzentration (PRC) Neugeborener ist höher als die ihrer Mütter, verdoppelt sich innerhalb 48 h und sinkt bis zum 10. Tag unter den Geburtswert. Die PRC der Mütter ist bei der Entbindung sowie am 6. Tag post partum trotz Absinkens auf 50% des Ausgangswertes höher als bei nicht-graviden Kontrollen.     

The role of the autonomic nervous system in the control of glucagon release during insulin hypoglycaemia in the calf

Zusammenfassung Der durch Insulin herbeigeführte hypoglykämische Effekt wurde in Kälbern mit durchtrenntem Nervous splanchnicus durch Atropin verstärkt, wobei sich der Anstieg des Plasma-Glukagonwertes verzögerte und reduzierte. Es wird ein cholinergischer Mechanismus der Glukagonsekretion während der Hypoglykämie vermutet.

Thyroid hormone in serum of fetal calf and pregnant cow during the last trimester of pregnancy

Summary Considerably higher thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentrations in sera of bovine fetuses than in maternal samples were found during the last trimester of pregnancy.Acknowledgment. We wish to thank Miss.R. Fajkoová for skilled technical assistance.     

Regulation of ammonia uptake in aspergillus nidulans.

The ammonia uptake in A. nidulans was found to be linear for about 20 min, and was proportional up to 1.5 mg/ml dry cell density. The transport of ammonia does not involve energy. Normal and biotin deficient A. nidulans showed an identical Km-values of 10.26 X 10(-5) M ammonia for uptake. The uptake of ammonium ion has been shown to be regulated by the intracellular concentration of ammonia.     

Plasma thyrotrophin concentration in the foetal calf

Résumé On a mesuré le taux de thyrotrophine (TSH), thyroxine et cortisol dans le plasma du foetus du veau pendant les 18 jours précédant la naissance. La diminution du TSH a précédé de 6 jours et s'est poursuivie en même temps que celle du taux de thyroxine.

Rotavirus and gastroenteritis in the newborn infant. Initial observations]

A simplified method for the diagnosis of Rotavirus by electron microscopy is presented. The incidence of these viruses is observed in new-born infants and the relationship with acute gastroenteritis is recalled.     

Heat production of the albino mouse during growth

Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe eines Gradientenkalorimeters wurde die Wärmeproduktion der weissen Laboratoriumsmaus während des Wachstums verfolgt und 3 Stadien unterschieden: 1. anfänglich niedrige Wärmeproduktion, 2. nach 5 Tagen starker Anstieg, 3. bei Sexualreife Absinken auf ein Plateau. Wärmeabgabe durch Strahlung, Verdunsten, Leitung und Konvektion wurde separat registriert.     

Influence of light on the plasma gonadotropin concentrations in the newborn rat.

The physiological increase in plasma gonadotropin (LH and FSH) levels in newborn rats is indisputably influenced by light. Permanent illumination accentuates this increase, whereas darkness decreases it in 16-day-old female rats. In male rats of the same age, only permanent illumination was tested with the same results.     

Biochemical and autoradiographical distribution of hyaluronic acid in calf rib cartilage.

In calf rib cartilage, about one half of total hyaluronate is soluble with guanidinium hydrochloride, the other half only after collagenase treatment. Evidence is presented for its pericellular and intracellular distribution.     

On the acid production during cytolysis of sea-urchin eggs

Zusammenfassung Während der Zytolyse des Seeigeleies findet eine ATP-Spaltung statt, die parallel mit der Säurebildung verläuft.Beide Prozesse werden durch M/400 Phlorrhizin gehemmt.Die Säureäquivalente stimmen quantitativ mit den aus den Phosphorsäurewerten berechneten Äquivalenten überein.Es wird deshalb angenommen, daß die gebildete Säure Phosphorsäure ist, die durch die ATP-Spaltung entsteht.
