Cerotegument plastron structure and function are compared in two species of non-related Cryptostigmata from different families in two environments prone to flooding, namely soil and leaf litter, as represented by Euzetes globulus (Nicolet) (Euzetidae), and the intertidal zone by Ameronothrus marinus (Banks) (Ameronothridae). Differences in cerotegument structure reflect the degree of exposure to mechanical stresses and hydrostatic pressure encountered in these two environments. Cerotegument plastrons communicate with the tracheal system in heavily armoured species, e.g. E. globulus, but gas transfer may occur across the cuticle in those species having a lightly sclerotized leathery cuticle, e.g. A. marinus. 相似文献

We examined microhabitat use of sympatrically occurring Tamias minimus (least chipmunk) and T. rufus (Hopi chipmunk) in a pi?on-juniper/sagebrush vegetative community near Molina, western Colorado, from October 1994 to June 1999. This community is dominated by 2 major microhabitat types: shrub (sage; Artemisia spp.) and tree (pine and juniper; Pinus edulis and Juniperus scopulorum ). Small mammals were live-trapped, marked, and released throughout this study. When it was the most abundant Tamias species on the study plots (1994-1997), Tamias minimus captures were associated with trees. Tamias rufus also exhibited this association but was captured at very low abundances during this period. Tamias rufus abundance was much greater, on average, than that of T. minimus between 1998 and 1999. During this time T. minimus captures were not associated with trees, but T. rufus captures remained associated with trees. As has been previously reported for other Tamias species, the greater abundance of 1 of 2 coexisting congeners in select areas may play a role in the microhabitat use of these 2 chipmunk species. 相似文献

A list of newly collected and identified oribatids from Kenya is presented, two of them represent new genera; Sceletoppia gen. nov. (Oppiidae) and Mahnertozetes gen. nov. (Haplozetidae). Twelve species, belonging to the families Steganacaridae, Lohmanniidae, Tetracondylidae, Microzetidae, Zetomotrichidae and Galumnidae are new to science. Brachylagus is currently a monotypic genus of uncertain origins and known only from Holocene and late Rancholabrean. A new species of leporid is described from the early and middle Pleistocene (Irvingtonian) deposits of Porcupine Cave, Park County, Colorado. Stratified deposits of the Pit and the Velvet Room, 2 localities within Porcupine Cave, have been dated biochronologically and paleomagnetically fro the middle Irvingtonian and early to middle Irvingtonian, respectively. Brachylagus coloradoensis sp. nov., is characterized by its conserved p3 enamel patterns which are intermediate between B. idahoensis and Hypolagus, and its size which is slightly larger than that of B. idahoensis . This suggest a possible ancestral relationship between Hypolagus and Brachylagus . 相似文献

Four species of Dipogon are recorded from Colorado for the first time. These are hurdi Evans, pulchripennis (Cresson), graenicheri Banks, and brevis (Cresson). The list includes 35 species not previously recorded from Colorado. A partial cranium belonging to the extinct woodland musk - ox, Symbos cavifrons, is reported from the headwaters of Oak Creek, Delta County, Colorado. This is the first cranium of the genus Symbos to be described from the Colorado Plateau, and it helps to define the southwest boundary of the known range of the genus. 相似文献

Branchinecta hiberna , a new species of fairy shrimp, is described from temporary pools in the Great Basin region of south central Oregon, northeastern California, and adjacent Nevada. The new species shares several characters with Branchinecta cornigera Lynch, 1958: males bear a similar large patch of small spines on the basal segment of antenna 2, and females bear the similar robust antenna 2 with medial spur, brood pouch shape, and resting egg (cyst) morphology. The new species differs from B. cornigera in the shape of the distal segment of antenna 2 and the number and size of spines on the paired penis warts of males, and in the thoracic spine pattern and lack of dorsal cephalic projections in females. Observations on behavior and ecology of B. hiberna are discussed. 相似文献
