We compared nectar production in wild populations and greenhouse-grown populations of the monkey flower species of section Erythranthe of the genus Mimulus . Nectar was sampled from over 1000 flowers. For each flower the volume of nectar was measured with a calibrated micropipette and the percentage of sugar with a hand refractometer. Percentage of sugar varied little from flower to flower in both field and greenhouse studies, but volume varied markedly from flower to flower in field studies and even more in greenhouse studies. This high variance in nectar volumes appears to be intrinsic. The amount of nectar in greenhouse populations tended to increase with time in the absence of pollinators. The amount of nectar in field populations tended to remain the same to pollinator withdrawals. The latter conclusion was corroborated by sampling nectar at 2-h intervals all day and comparing the total volume produced by a flower to the volume of nectar produced in control flowers sampled only at the end of the day.  相似文献

Summary

In 3 years 13 485 female Tabanidae of 4 Genera and 12 species were caught near cattle of a Dar es Salaam dairy farm. 58·44% of the flies were T. fraternus and 24·5% T. taeniola, which, in the context of possible mechanical disease transmission, were considered to be major species.

T. gratus, T. biguttatus and Haematopota decora showed a proportion of 6·77%, 5·8% and 3·5% respectively.

Another 7 species represented altogether 0·98% of the total catch.

The seasonal occurrence of Tabanidae depended on the pattern of annual climatic changes, with the highest seasonal incidence observed in T. taeniola.  相似文献

Radiocarbon analysis of selected amber and copal specimens yielded infinite radiocarbon ages for amber as expected, but all the copal samples proved to be recent (less than 100 years old), emphasizing the need to base the study of insect inclusions in copal on directly dated material. Some previously studied material assumed to be of Pleistocene age may need to be reassessed.  相似文献

The fish population of Ruth Reservoir, California, was sampled every two weeks with variable mesh gill nets from May 1974 through May 1975. Fish were captured in the following order of numerical abundance: Humboldt sucker ( Catostomus humboldtianus ), golden shiner ( Notemigonus crysoleucus ), brown bullhead ( Ictalurus nebulosus ), white catfish ( I. catus ), rainbow trout ( Salmo gairdneri ), and largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoides ). The three most abundant species made up about 95 percent of total numbers and weight. All species exhibited a similar cyclic temporal availability pattern: catch rates increased to a maximum during summer and fall and decreased during winter and spring. Environmental variables with the most pronounced relationships to fish catches were temperature (direct) and turbidity (inverse).  相似文献

Ontogenetic allometry of body components was studied in sea urchins from the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific Oceans. As sea urchins grow, the body wall, lantern and gut assume relatively smaller fractions of total wet weight whereas the coelomic fluid and gonad combined become relatively larger.

During growth, height (h) changes relative to diameter (d). Species that are relatively flat when small tend to become taller and if relatively tall become flatter as they grow with convergence towards h = d/2. This relationship is associated with equal volumetric increase for equal incremental changes in diameter and height at h = d/2. There is an interspecific relationship between height allometry and maximum size. If animals have a height diameter ratio less than 1:2 when they are very small, then the flatter they are initially, the larger the potential maximum size. There is a discontinuity in the relationship close to d = d/2 so if small individuals are relatively tall (h > d/2) then potential maximum size again is large. The allometric component of maximum size adds an interesting complication to analysis of size related features in life history evolution. The significance of allometric parameters for sea urchins include adaptation (α for body wall wet weight), developmental constraint (β for height: diameter allometry), and developmental plasticity (both α and β for the wet weight of Aristotle's lantern).  相似文献

Pyramid Lake fish populations were sampled with nets on a monthly basis from November 1975 through December 1977. Fish species were taken in the following order of numerical relative abundance: tui chub ( Gila bicolor ), Tahoe sucker ( Catostomus tahoensis ), Lahontan cutthroat trout ( Salmo clarki henshawi ) including cutthroat-rainbow hybrids, cui-ui ( Chasmistes cujus ), and Sacramento perch ( Archoplites interruptus ). Relative abundance estimates are discussed with respect to seasonal availability, spatial distribution of the fish, sampling bias of the fishing methods, and biomass of the fish. Recent temporal trends in the population structure of the lake are presented.  相似文献

Density and biomass of redband trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri ) relative to stream temperature were examined in headwater reaches of Big Jacks and Little Jacks Creeks in southwestern Idaho. Stream shading was greater (mean of 80% versus 46%) and solar insolation was lower (mean of 7.9 versus 15.1 mJ · m -2 · day -1 ) in Little Jacks Creek ( P P ≤ 0.07) but increased more rapidly and to higher levels (24° - 26° C) in Big Jacks Creek. Daily maximum water temperatures (23 km downstream of headwater springs) during July 1996 were lower in Little Jacks Creek (ranged from 18° to 22° C) than in Big Jacks Creek (20.2° to 26° C, P P -2 and 25.0 g · m -2 ) compared to Big Jacks Creek (0.3 fish · m -2 and 8.9 g · m -2 , P = 0.01). Trout density was negatively correlated with increases in water temperature ( P = 0.03) and solar insolation ( P = 0.09) in both streams. Trout biomass increased with stream shading and was negatively correlated with solar insolation ( P < 0.1). Warmer water temperatures in Big Jacks Creek were likely due to historical summerlong livestock grazing, which drastically reduced riparian shading.  相似文献

Cheatgrass ( Bromus tectorum ) is an invasive annual known to negatively impact many shrub-dependent organisms; however, relatively little research has examined how it affects snake communities. Bromus tectorum is abundant at Antelope Island State Park, Davis County, Utah, and could be a possible threat to snake populations. Study sites representing different B. tectorum coverage percentages were established to measure relative abundance of snakes. Snakes were captured from June to September 2005 primarily by using funnel traps attached to drift-fence arrays. Linear regression revealed a negative relationship between B. tectorum coverage (%) and the relative abundance of the Great Basin gopher snake ( Pituophis catenifer deserticola ) and the western racer ( Coluber mormon ). These results (1) suggest that B. tectorum invasions result in reduced snake abundance in shrubsteppe habitat on Antelope Island and (2) add to our understanding of the relationships between B. tectorum and native fauna.  相似文献

A total of 145 species of diatoms was collected from 13 sites in the Middle Fork of the Salmon River drainage, Idaho, USA. Achnanthes minutissima was the prevalent species with an importance index of 19.25. Cluster analysis revealed 2 main site groupings, sites above the entrance of Loon Creek and sites below. The entrance of Loon Creek (6th order) increases the Middle Fork of the Salmon River to a 7th order stream. Shannon-Weiner diversity values were generally high. &nbsp;&nbsp;  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that allochthonous carbon is important in the diet of the endemic pupfish Cyprinodon diabolis over a 3-year period in Devils Hole, Nevada. Devils Hole is a cavernous limnocrene located in the Mojave Desert approximately 15 m below the land surface and receives direct solar radiation &lt;7% of the total time during the year. The system is dominated by filamentous cyanobacteria in the summer and supports about 15 invertebrate species and the endemic pupfish C. diabolis . We examined food web structure and measured autochthonous carbon production and entry of allochthonous carbon with funnel traps. Stable isotopes were used to compare contributions of each carbon source. Allochthonous carbon contributed 2971 kj &#8901; yr -1 (60%) of the total available energy to the food web compared to only 2000 kj &#8901; yr -1 autochthonous production. A major stochastic rain event delivered more terrestrial carbon to Devils Hole in l hour than annual allochthonous carbon, estimated from data collected with funnel traps. Mixing models with &#948; 15 N, &#948; 13 C, and &#948; 34 S showed a seasonal shift in diet for C. diabolis from filamentous cyanobacteria in the summer to the collector/gathering insect Stenelmis calida in the winter. Stenelmis tissue had high proportions of allochthonous plant carbon in the winter.  相似文献

Yellow pine chipmunks ( Tamias amoenus ) scatter-hoard food during summer and autumn but must form a larder as a winter food source before winter begins. Yellow pine chipmunks do not larder-hoard large quantities of food during the summer, apparently because a summer larder could not be defended from pilferers. We tested the assumption that the rate of pilferage from an unguarded larder would be significantly greater than the rate of pilferage from surface caches (which are also unguarded by yellow pine chipmunks) during the summer and autumn. Buried plastic buckets were used as artificial nests containing larders of 1000 sunflower seeds or 200 Jeffrey pine ( Pinus jeffreyi ) seeds. The pilferage of larder contents was monitored daily and compared to pilferage of surface caches. Animals (yellow pine chipmunks and deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus ) removed sunflower seeds from caches much faster than from larders, but caches of Jeffrey pine seeds disappeared much more slowly than pine seeds in larders. Further, animals removed pine seeds from larders more quickly than they did sunflower seeds from larders. The difference between seed species was probably because sunflower seeds have much stronger odors, which rodents readily detect, and because chipmunks prefer pine seeds over sunflower seeds. Yellow pine chipmunks must spend a considerable portion of their time foraging for seeds and may not be able to defend a large larder during summer.  相似文献
