Oregon records from Harney County establish a minimum altitudinal occurrence for the water shrew ( Sorex palustris ), identify an isolated population of the montane shrew ( Sorex monticola obscures ), and provide an additional specimen of Merriam's shrew ( Sorex merriami ). Utah records extending the ranges in the southeastern part of the Bonneville Basin for the little pocket mouse ( Perognathus longimembris ), long-tailed pocket mouse ( Perognathus formosus ), and dark kangaroo mouse ( Microdipodops megacephalus ) are also given.  相似文献

Data on reproduction of three species of pocket mice ( Perognathus ) occurring in northern Utah are summarized. Perognathus parvus and P. formosus bred in spring but not the remainder of the year. This occurred despite mild fall and winter temperatures and shallow snowcover. Litter sizes for P. parvus and P. formosus were similar to those reported by previous investigators. A small sample of P. longimembris indicated they may have much larger litters (averaging 5.78 young) than previously reported for laboratory populations. Adult body mass was positively correlated with testis mass in all species, and with litter size in P. parvus .  相似文献

Three specimens of Microdipodops megacephalus nasutus were captured in the Wassuk Mountains of western Mineral County, Nevada, which provide a second place of occurrence for the subspecies and a new altitudinal record of 2455 m for the genus. This is the first time this species has been found in the pinyon-juniper belt.  相似文献

A series of removal experiments were performed on Dipodomys merriami, D. microps, and Perognathus longimembris to test for the importance of competition for food and microhabitats in a heteromyid community in the Great Basin Desert. Each of these species was removed singly to determine the short-term effects on the microhabitat preferences of the remaining species. We correctly predicted, based on differences in diet, that the removal of D. microps (a foliovore) would have no effect on D. merriami or P. longimembris (granivores). Using the dominance hierarchy theory, we correctly predicted that removal of a larger heteromyid, D. merriami, would have an effect on the microhabitat use of the smaller P. longimembris, but not vice versa. While our results offer strong evidence of competition for food and microhabitats, the short-term reactions were weak compared to the long-term reactions found in other studies of heteromyids.  相似文献

Two of the Little Dell Dam fossil localities produced the 1st Pleistocene records of the jumping mouse Zapus from Utah. We describe these teeth in detail and compare their morphology with both extinct and extant jumping mouse taxa. Although it is not possible to confidently assign these specimens to a particular species, the Little Dell Dam fossils are clearly distinct from the only living jumping mouse ( Zapus princeps ) currently known from Utah. The paracone is attached to the rest of the occlusal surface of the upper 1st and 2nd molars in modern Z. princeps from Utah; the paracone is isolated in the molars from Little Dell Dam. The fossils from Little Dell Dam are the 1st reported records of Pleistocene Zapus west of the Rocky Mountains.  相似文献

The hispid pocket mouse ( Chaetodipus hispidus ) occurs throughout the Great Plains, mainly west of the Missouri River. In Nebraska, this species likely occurs throughout the state, but records of occurrence were lacking for east-central and northeastern counties. During a survey in 2008 for the plains pocket mouse ( Perognathus flavescens ) in eastern Nebraska, we documented C. hispidus in 10 new counties, including a modest range expansion into northeastern Nebraska. Many individuals were captured on moderately compact soils consisting of silt, but some also were captured on sandy and other friable soils. Most individuals were captured in areas containing some exposed ground, but this may reflect our trap placement for P. flavescens. Individuals from northeastern and east-central Nebraska best resembled C. h. spilotus from southeastern Nebraska, with black coloration suffused on the dorsum, head, and dorsal side of the tail; however, our individuals generally lacked the characteristic bright ochraceous coloration along lateral lines and on the dorsum. Limited evidence supports a recent expansion in distribution within the region.  相似文献

In Iowa, the northern grasshopper mouse ( Onychomys leucogaster ) previously was known only from the northwestern part of the state. Herein, we report records of O. leucogaster from the 1970s and 1980s that extend its distribution into west-central and southwestern Iowa. These records may represent dispersal movements into these parts of Iowa by southward movements from populations in northwestern Iowa or they may represent eastward movements of individuals from Nebraska prior to channelization of the Missouri River.  相似文献

Mearn’s grasshopper mouse ( Onychomys arenicola ) in Mexico is found primarily in the central and northern states. This is the first report of the genus Onychomys in the state of Veracruz, based on 7 captured specimens (3 collected). This finding extends the species’ known distribution by approximately 470 km east-southeast. In addition, this record increases the alpha diversity of terrestrial mammals for the state of Veracruz to 192 species.  相似文献

A new species of free living marine nematode, Pontonema alaeospicula sp. nov., is a dominant member of the fauna in three organically polluted sublittoral habitats off the Scottish coast. The species is described and the genus reviewed. A schematic pictorial key to the genus is provided. One hundred and ninety-four P. maniculatus were examined from two tundra sites. Flea infestation rates were 1.9 fleas per mouse examined and 4.1 fleas per infested mouse. Species taken in significant numbers were Monopsyllus thambus (51 percent), Peromyscopsylla hesperomys (34 percent), Malaraeus euphorbi (9 percent), and Catallagia calisheri (4 percent). Peromyscus maniculatus host/flea relationships in the tundra are compared with those in other life zones in the park.    相似文献

In southeastern Norway, by the last week of June (1992), 48%of Chromatomyia fuscula emerged, based on the number of mines collected from Hordeum vulgare leaves. Among the parasitoids Diglyphus begini was the dominant species, but Cirrospilus vittatus and Neochrysocharis aratus also emerged in significant numbers. During June and July, N. aratus was the dominant species in the 1st and 2nd leaves, but D. begini was dominant in the 4th to 6th leaves. C. vittatus and Cyrtogaster vulgaris affected all larvae of the leaf-miner fly, living on various leaves. In central Norway, 48% of C. fuscula also emerged. C. vulgaris and D. begini were the dominant parasitoids and C. vittatus was also found. C. fuscula has no specialist parasitoids. Adults of the generalist parasitoids of the leafminers always search for different hosts. In investigation of the parasitoid complex of a lepidopteran leaf-miner, Phyllocnistis labyrinthella (living in Populus tremula leaves at the edge of the examined barley field), three shared parasitoids (C. vittatus, Pnigalio soemius and Pnigalio pectinicornis) were found. The complex network of host plant-phytophagous insect-insect parasitoid-facultative hyperparasitoid relationship is discussed.  相似文献

Intra-specific colour differences in insects may occur as a result of environmental factors such as food type, temperature and humidity, or may be under genetic control. These colour polymorphisms may result in fitness differences through several mechanisms, including mate selection, camouflage from or warning to natural enemies, and heat absorption. Two colour morphs of adult Chrysophtharta agricola (Chapuis) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Paropsini) are present in the field in mainland Australia and Tasmania: a common green-brown form, and a rare black form. Tasmanian populations were sampled to assess the frequency of each morph at eight localities. The black form represented less than 3% of beetles (N=1724), with the proportion not significantly different between localities. Crossing tests using the two colour morphs of C. agricola showed that the black form was genetically dominant over the common form. To assess whether colour morphs had any fitness differences, we measured pre-oviposition period, fecundity, longevity, adult size and egg hatch rate, which each showed no significant difference between colour morphs. Field sampling of mating pairs and rearing the offspring of field-collected females showed no evidence of non-random mating. Modelling the population over 100 generations confirmed that for this species, melanism is controlled by a dominant but neutral allele, and, thus, is maintained at a constant low level in the population.  相似文献

The zoeal and megalopal stages of Phimochirus roseus (Benedict, 1892) are described and illustrated from material reared under laboratory conditions. Although the vast majority of zoeae of this species pass through only four larval stages before the moult to megalopa, an occasional fifth stage has been observed. Phimochirus roseus differs in a number of morphological attributes from the only other species of Phimochirus whose larvae have been described. However, their shared features are sufficiently characteristic to confirm the distinctiveness of the genus and its general developmental homogeneity.  相似文献

The biology and immature stages of Pagyris ulla (Hewitson, [1857]) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Ithomiini) are described for the first time. The species’ host plant is established to be Brugmansia candida Pers. (Solanaceae). The life cycle from eggs to adult under laboratory conditions and ambient temperature took approximately 47 days, and the larvae passed through five instars. The larvae are gregarious, feed at night, and rest during the day in nests made by joining leaves near the apex of the plant stem.  相似文献

Water mites Limnochares aquatica (L., 1758) during maintenance in the laboratory for a long period of time in constant conditions periodically produced certain whitish flocculent material consisting of long rigid unbranched tube-like threads 1.3 ± 0.3 µm in diameter crossing freely. These threads were studied using light-optical as well as transmission electron microscopical and scanning electron microscopical methods. Microbiological staining was also applied to the threads to exclude their bacterial or fungal origin. The thread wall is built of fine fibrils arranged at different angles to the long axis of threads that is reflected in a certain stratification of the wall. Threads are mostly hollow or may contain electron-dense homogeneous material. No cell components are present in the thread composition. Numerous dermal glands with their small slit-like orifice scattered throughout the mite body surface are thought to produce these threads. Most probably the thread formation is a reaction of mites to stress under laboratory conditions, and this is expected to be a type of defensive reaction.  相似文献

Weight loss was rapid and fluid consumption decreased sharply when Onychomys torridus were exposed to salinities greater than 0.3 Molar. The southern grasshopper mouse is physiologically unspecialized for maintaining water balance in its xeric habitat. The southern grasshopper mouse is capable of weight maintenance on smaller daily water rations than is the northern grasshopper mouse ( Onychomys leucogaster ) . Differences in the water balance of O. torridus and O. leucogaster may influence their local distributions in areas of sympatry.  相似文献

We describe the five copepodids of Astericola asterinae (Bocquet, 1952) a poecilostomatoid copepod (family Lichomolgidae), reared in the laboratory. It shows only very slight sexual dimorphism in the third segment of C5 maxilliped. Our study of the copepodid development, together with the observations of Carton (1964), Bocquet et al. (1970) and Conradi et al. (1993), support the separation of A. asterinae from its sister species A. clausi (Rosoll, 1889).  相似文献
