The morphology of the mouthparts and pereiopods of three thalassinidean mudshrimps, Callianassa subterranea (Montagu), Jaxea nocturna Nardo and Upogebia stellata (Montagu) (Decapoda: Thalassinidea) are described. The distribution of setae is also described and related to function, in particular to feeding and grooming. The comparative morphology of the maxillipeds and pereiopods showed greatest differences between species and can be related to differences in feeding behaviour. Callianassa subterranea has mouthpart morphology and setation suitable for handling sediment particles and highly specialized pereiopods consistent with the digging activity of a deposit feeder. Upogebia stellata is the most densely setose of the three species and many of the appendages bear layered fringes of setae which are used to trap fine particles during suspension feeding. Jaxea nocturna appears to possess mouthpart and pereiopod setal combinations suitable for a fine sediment diet but is the least morphologically specialized species. It does not use its pereiopods in grooming behaviour. Specialized denticulate setae on the coxa of the third maxilliped may take over the gill grooming functions performed by the pereiopods of C. subterranea and U. stellata. In C. subterranea and U. stellata the feeding structures are adapted to a specific trophic mode but have features that allow other modes to be used, whilst J. nocturna is much less specialized and may represent a more primitive thalassinidean form.  相似文献

Morphological variations in the two zoeal stages and megalopa of a lecithotrophic population of Paralomis granulosa (Jacquinot) reared under laboratory conditions are reviewed. Attention is also directed to certain aspects of their development not previously considered. More importantly, the first three juvenile stages are described and illustrated for the first time. Specific consideration is given to the structural changes in the abdominal tergites during the transformation from megalopa to third crab, and ancillary information on abdominal plate development in juvenile stages four and five is provided. Total pleopod loss in both sexes and subsequent reappearance in females is discussed.  相似文献

The complete larval development of Pandalus gracilis Stimpson is described based on larvae reared in the laboratory. The species has four larval stages (stages 1–4) and one postlarval stage (stage 5). The survival rate of the postlarva stage is very high. Of the 40 larvae reared individually, 39 larvae moulted to the postlarva stage within approximately 21 days at a rearing temperature of 15°C. Larval morphological characteristics of the species are described and figured. Larval development of P. gracilis is compared with other Pandalus and Pandalopsis species. Komai (1999 Komai, T. 1999. A revision of the genus Pandalus (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea: Pandalidae).. Journal of Natural History, 33: 12561372.  [Google Scholar]) divided species of Pandalus into four species groups based on adult morphology. Pandalus gracilis belongs to the P. hypsinotus group. In this study, using larval characters, the P. hypsinotus group can be divided into two groups by the appearance of the mandibular palp and the shape of the telson: the first group contains P. hypsinotus and P. danae, and the second group contains P. gracilis, P. prensor, and P. nipponensis.  相似文献

Male ghost crabs, Ocypode platytarsus, have the most elaborate visual and acoustic/vibrational display so far described in the genus. In common with other species, rapping as a result of hitting the ground with the major cheliped produces rap trains with a variable number of elements. Ocypode platytarsus also produces faster and longer rap trains by drumming with both chelipeds. Additionally, at the approach of a wandering crab, a dance display is also performed. The display begins with the crab rearing up on outstretched legs. Rapid stepping on the spot leads to swift sideways movements that increase in complexity with the longest ones being full circling movements around the wanderer. The display generates an auditory/vibrational sound that is distinct from that produced by the chelipeds. Longer rap trains and drumming events occur in close association with, or following dance displays, but usually when the wanderer is moving away. At other times, rap trains with fewer than ten elements are produced. These observations are discussed in relation to the possible interaction of the three communication channels that are available to the Ocypodinae.  相似文献

Three cryptic species of the genus Munida from New Caledonia, previously identified as M. tuberculata Henderson, , M. notata Macpherson, and M. clinata Macpherson, , are described and illustrated. The three species are identified by subtle and constant morphological characters, which match clear differences in molecular sequences (16S rDNA and COI genes). The results also confirm the importance of several of these characters (e.g. length of the antennular and antennal spines) in the taxonomy of the genus Munida.  相似文献

The genus Coralaxius is rediagnosed, and the type species C. nodulosus (Meinert, 1877), the holotype of which was found to be identical with C. abelei Kensley and Gore, 1982, is redescribed. The two new species of Coralaxius are described, viz. C. galapagensis from the Galapagos Islands, and C. indopacificus from Fiji and the Comoro Islands. On the basis of carapace, gill and appendage characters, it is concluded that C. indopacificus is more primitive than the other two species. The genus is thought to have had a tethyan distribution, with the eastern Pacific representative being cut off from the western Atlantic form with the raising of the Isthmus of Panama.  相似文献

Eubrachyurans not only exhibit a crab-like body shape, consisting of a mostly wide cephalothorax and a thin, shield-like pleon folded underneath it, but reportedly hold the pleon in this position with the use of specialized holding structures. To further our knowledge of the variability of these holding structures, and investigate their functionality, male and female crabs from five primary freshwater crab and five selected thoracotreme families were examined with stereomicroscopy. Exemplary specimens of each group were documented photographically and with micro-computed tomography to illustrate the holding structures in situ. The results show a press-button mechanism of variable shape in freshwater crabs, where divergent structures possibly support pleon attachment of different effectiveness. The press-button is present in the majority of basal heterotreme lineages, and is therefore regarded as an ancestral character of the Heterotremata. In the Thoracotremata, multiple holding mechanisms are identified: press-button, clasping apparatus, overhanging edge, and increased setae cover on sternal plates, with the last system probably only effective in terrestrial species, due to wet adhesion effects. The ancestral character state in the Thoracotremata is debatable, but most likely also a functional press-button was present. Each holding mechanism requires different pleon movements to engage and disengage. Additionally, in contrast to the most common press-button mechanism, divergent holding mechanisms tend to be present, and likely functional, in adult males and females.  相似文献

The morphology of the zoea and megalop of Maja crispata are described from laboratory-reared material, and compared with other two spider crabs belonging to the subfamily Majinae, Maja squinado and Maja goltziana, recorded in the same region of the eastern Atlantic. The diagnostic characters allowing the separation of these species' larvae are tabulated and discussed.  相似文献

We describe and illustrate the complete development of Argulus foliaceus L. A metanauplius is followed by nine juvenile stages. Eggs were detected in the thorax of the female at the 11th stage. Comparisons are made between the development of A. foliaceus and the other freshwater species of Argulus currently found in the UK.  相似文献

To determine the early life history of the land hermit crab Coenobita brevimanus Dana, 1852, larvae were cultured individually in the laboratory. The zoeal and the megalopal stages are described and illustrated. The larvae developed through four planktonic zoeal stages to the megalopal stage. The major differences in the zoeal characters between C. brevimanus and other described Coenobita species were found in the armature of the pleomeres, whereas the character of pleomeres of C. brevimanus zoeae is the same as that of the coconut crab Birgus latro, a different genus in the same family. Morphological similarity was also found in segmentations of antennules and antennae in megalopae between C. brevimanus and the coconut crab. Megalopae of C. brevimanus were cultured in containers holding seawater and a hard substrate. These crabs migrate from the sea to land after developing a habit of acquiring gastropod shells.  相似文献
