Sympagurus dimorphus is one of the 12 hermit crab species recorded for Argentinean waters. Despite the high abundance registered in some scallop fishing grounds, its biology remains little known. In the present study, we analysed some population features of S. dimorphus living in symbiosis with Epizoanthus paguricola from a series of samples taken in the Argentine Sea, south-western Atlantic Ocean. Our results showed that S. dimorphus was commonly found from 40ºS to lower latitudes, in a patchy distribution along the shelf-break front. The overall sex ratio was 1:1. The smallest ovigerous female measured 6 mm in cephalothoracic shield length and this size was used as parameter to define the size of juveniles. The sex ratio size class pattern corresponded to Type IV or anomalous curve. S. dimorphus is a dimorphic species, as evidenced by the larger size of the males and the positive allometric growth of the right cheliped. The species also showed asymmetry, with the left uropod always larger than the right one. To the best to our knowledge, this is the first report on population features and relative growth for a member of the genus, based on long-term sampling. This species presents a patchy distribution along the shelf-break of Argentina. Its density tended to decrease over the five-year sampling period regarding the recruitment of hermits associated with colonies of zoanthids. In addition, the relatively homogeneous nature of this refuge does not seem to influence the growth of the hermit crab, which presents sexual dimorphism in relation to the sex/size conditions.  相似文献

Some morphometric relationships and biometric aspects were studied in the hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901) with the purpose of describing its relative growth and finding the size where sexual maturity is reached. Specimens were collected monthly from September 1995 to August 1997 in the Ubatuba region using double-rig trawl nets. A total of 1084 specimens (625 males and 459 females) was analysed. In this species, sexual dimorphism is particularly evident in chela dimensions. Differences between males and females were found in the left propodus length versus cephalothoracic shield length (CSL) and wet weight (WW) versus CSL relationships. Males showed a high positive allometry in chela growth, while females were close to isometry/negative allometry. The size at which a clear differentiation occurred in the growth of the propodus length and in the increase in weight of males and females was between 4.5 and 6.0mm CSL, suggesting that size at which sexual maturity is reached.  相似文献

The structure of two populations of the fiddler crab Uca rapax in two subtropical mangrove habitats near Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil were compared. The size–frequency distribution, sex ratio, and recruitment were evaluated. Sampling was performed monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 in the Itamambuca and Ubatumirim habitats. Crabs were caught manually for 15?min by two collectors during low tide. The carapace width of each crab was measured with a digital caliper, and the sex and ovigerous state were recorded. The median size of the carapace width of males was greater than that of females at both sites (P<0.05). The median size of the crabs from Itamambuca was larger than at Ubatumirim (P<0.05). Only 28 ovigerous females were obtained from both mangroves, which suggested that females might remain in their burrows during the incubation period. The highest recruitment pulse occurred in winter for both populations, probably as a consequence of high reproductive activity during summer. The sex ratio in the size classes showed an anomalous pattern, with a higher frequency of females in the intermediate size classes. This may be related to a greater energy requirement for reproduction in females, thus delaying growth. The variable environmental conditions to which Uca rapax populations are subject appear to act directly or indirectly on the population, causing variations in growth and reproductive processes in the different populations investigated here.  相似文献

In this study the population dynamics of the diogenid hermit crab Diogenes brevirostris is evaluated focusing on size structure, sex ratio and breeding season. Crabs were randomly taken on a monthly basis from January to December 2003 at Costa do Sol, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. A total of 622 crabs was obtained of which 290 were males (46.6%), 170 were non‐ovigerous females (27.3%) and 162 were ovigerous females (26.1%). The overall size frequency distribution was unimodal for males, non‐ovigerous females and ovigerous females. The overall sex ratio (1:1.15) differed from the expected 1:1 ratio. Sexual dimorphism was evidenced by the larger size attained by males in relation to both ovigerous and non‐ovigerous females. Breeding took place year‐round with three peaks of spawning (March, August and December). Despite the high reproductive activity, young recruits were scarce in the population. The present results suggest that the study area is suitable for reproduction and growth whereas recruitment may take place in different areas from that occupied by the adults.  相似文献

The breeding season of the hermit crab Dardanus deformis is studied based on the occurrence of ovigerous females, in relation to temperature and rainfall. Monthly samples were obtained between January and December 2003 at Costa do Sol, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. A total of 331 female individuals was analysed of which 164 were non‐ovigerous females and 167 were ovigerous females. Dardanus deformis breeds continuously in the study area with peaks of spawning from August to October and a slight decrease from May to July. Both temperature and rainfall were positively correlated with percentages of ovigerous females. Multiple linear regressions suggest that rainfall is the main factor controlling the breeding activity of D. deformis in Maputo Bay. This species may have a rapid and high reproductive activity in the study area as observed by the higher number of ovigerous females relative to non‐ovigerous females which may contribute to a constant larval supply and recruitment of this species in the study area.  相似文献

Male ghost crabs, Ocypode platytarsus, have the most elaborate visual and acoustic/vibrational display so far described in the genus. In common with other species, rapping as a result of hitting the ground with the major cheliped produces rap trains with a variable number of elements. Ocypode platytarsus also produces faster and longer rap trains by drumming with both chelipeds. Additionally, at the approach of a wandering crab, a dance display is also performed. The display begins with the crab rearing up on outstretched legs. Rapid stepping on the spot leads to swift sideways movements that increase in complexity with the longest ones being full circling movements around the wanderer. The display generates an auditory/vibrational sound that is distinct from that produced by the chelipeds. Longer rap trains and drumming events occur in close association with, or following dance displays, but usually when the wanderer is moving away. At other times, rap trains with fewer than ten elements are produced. These observations are discussed in relation to the possible interaction of the three communication channels that are available to the Ocypodinae.  相似文献

A new species of Mesabolivar is described from Brazilian forests: Mesabolivar delclaroi. The mating behaviour, postembryonic development, number of egg sacs and eggs, birth rate, number of instars, developmental time until adulthood, sex ratio and size of cephalothorax (per instar) were recorded. The sexual behaviour was described and categorized into four steps: courtship, pre-copulation, copulation and post-copulation. After hatching, individuals presented five instars until maturity. The mean number of eggs (42 ± 16.6) and live births (31.5 ± 3.4) of the first egg sac were significantly greater than that of a second one (23.8 ± 3.8, and 19.25 ± 3.9, respectively). The developmental time from birth to adulthood (130.8 ± 9.6 days) did not differ significantly between egg sacs produced (128.61 ± 11.1). The size of the cephalothorax did not differ among adults or between sexes. The sex ratio revealed a shift in favour of females (4: 3).  相似文献

The relative growth of body parts, such as abdomen, uropod, scaphocerite, telson, rostrum, and the third pereiopod of males and females of the giant red shrimp (Aristaeomorpha foliacea, Risso, 1827) was studied in samples from the Greek Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean) in 1999–2000. These were related to carapace length, sex and size of individuals. A length–weight relationship was also obtained. In general, a negative allometry of swimming appendages (uropod, scaphocerite), abdomen (related to metabolic processes), and length of the third pereiopod (involved in walking ability) was observed in both sexes. Growth of the telson was positively allometric in females and negatively allometric in males. Asynchronous growth of the male rostrum was also noted. Appendages were proportionally longer in juveniles than in adults of both sexes. A strong negative allometry between length–weight for both sexes was shown, and females were heavier than males in all sampled months.  相似文献

The present study focused on the biology and life cycle of Tmetonyx similis, a scavenging amphipod inhabiting the continental slope of the north‐western Mediterranean. All the categories of individuals were observed in the samples. The emergence of offspring occurs in successive cohorts. The lifespan of the females is longer than that of the males, but the sex ratio is strongly in favour of the males. The fecundity was found to be lower than that of the other female crustaceans present in these samples. The growth pattern was modelled. A strong correlation was observed between the length and the weight of the animals collected. Several hypotheses are proposed to explain a sex ratio in favour of males. This result may be explained by a migratory process of the females of T. similis. A comparison of the reproduction strategy is given for the three main scavenger crustacean species (amphipods and isopod) collected in this area.  相似文献

The population structure and reproduction of Pilumnus vespertilio were studied for the first time in Mozambique. Random samples of crabs were taken monthly from January to December 2002 from a pebble area of Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique. A clear sexual dimorphism was observed in the present population with males reaching greater sizes than females. Sex ratio was female‐biased, and the monthly size–frequency distributions were often bimodal. The annual reproductive cycle of Pilumnus vespertilio was continuous with peaks of breeding in summer. Results suggest that embryonic development may be synchronized within the population as a result of the very high reproductive activity observed in summer. Juveniles are recruited mostly in winter in the study area.  相似文献

The present study describes the seasonal reproductive cycle and population structure of the porcellanid crab Petrolisthes laevigatus, a typical inhabitant of the rocky intertidal. A total of 960 individuals (including 372 females) was collected in monthly samples from October 1993 to December 1994 in central-southern Chile. Ovigerous females were present between August and December, and were absent between January and July. The breeding season started during late winter (August), and females with embryos close to hatching occurred between October and end of spring (December). Considering the gonadosomatic index and the duration of the incubation period, it is concluded that P. laevigatus has a markedly seasonal breeding period with probably two successive spawnings per female per season. Our results compared with previous studies in temperate intertidal porcellanids suggest a lower structural variability of the population during the sampling period, but a pronounced seasonal variation in both sex ratio and abundance. The influence of environmental habitat conditions (i.e. temperature) is suggested to be responsible for the lower variation in the crab population size structure in ovigerous females, and the almost constant size distribution observed in males.  相似文献

In this study we analysed the body size, age structure, age at maturity, longevity and growth pattern of Argenteohyla siemersi pederseni in north-eastern Argentina using skeletochronological methods. Body size was sexually dimorphic; females were significantly larger and heavier than males, regardless of age. As A. s. pederseni is an explosive breeder with only one reproductive episode per year, we assumed that each Line of Arrested Growth (LAG) observed was equivalent to one period of decreasing growth, LAGs reflecting a direct estimation of individual age. The minimum number of LAGs counted was two for males and three for females, but there was no sexual difference in longevity. The von Bertalanffy's growth coefficients (K) were higher in males than in females for both size and body mass. Females had a lower growth rate than males, took longer to reach the minimum maturation size, and were older and larger at reproduction.  相似文献

Macrophthalmus depressus larvae were reared in the laboratory using filtered estuarine water of salinity 25±1 ppt and temperature 29–31°C. M. depressus reaches the first crab stage after passing through five zoeal and a megalopa stage requiring 22–23 days. Each stage is described in detail and compared with other known species of the genus.  相似文献

The genus Mycocepurus is a phylogenetically basal attine ant, so studies of its biology may provide insight into the evolution of behaviours associated with fungus‐growing that characterize the tribe Attini. Mycocepurus smithii from Puerto Rico produces sexual females from July to September, but no males were observed in 2 years of observations, confirming previous observations elsewhere. Colonies were founded between July and August and most nests were haplometrotic (85% of 74 nests). After excavating a tunnel and small chamber, a foundress queen inserted her fore wings into the ceiling and used the wing surfaces as a platform on which the incipient fungal garden was grown. Foundresses foraged for substrate to grow the fungus garden. Growth of incipient colonies was slow: the first workers emerged 2–5 months after colony founding and, after 8 months, colonies contained on average only a single worker.  相似文献

Some species of Leptodactylus of the L. pentadactylus group lay their eggs outside water but the tadpoles need to reach water to complete the larval phase; other species complete development in terrestrial nests. Here we present details of the reproduction of L. labyrinthicus in south‐eastern Brazil. The proportion of tadpoles and trophic eggs in aged egg clutches was determined, as well as the growth of the tadpoles while in the nest. The gut contents of tadpoles that were in egg clutches of frogs were analysed. Adult males did not differ from females in size and had hypertrophied forearms and an enlarged spine on the thumb. Reproduction was initiated with the first rains of August/September and extended to mid‐January. Calling and spawning occurred at permanent or temporary water bodies. The foam nests were built in excavated basins outside of, but close to the water. The male determined the place of the basin construction; after amplexus, the female completed the excavation. The amplexus was axillary. One female spent the day after spawning in the foam. The eggs were pale grey, the yolk averaging 2.3?mm in diameter. The mean number of eggs was 2101 per egg clutch. The number of tadpoles in individual nests varied between 0.05% and 11.40% in relation to the total laid eggs. The tadpoles entered water when rains flooded the basin. The tadpoles grew to 12 times the weight of an individual egg while in the nest; no nesting tadpole was beyond stage 25. The longest time we followed tadpoles in a nest was 25 days. Tadpoles were found preying upon eggs of three other frog species and upon conspecific eggs. Males fought by grasping each other in a belly‐to‐belly position; the powerful arms and the thumb spines represent weapons. Even though males can reach maturity in the season following birth, small size would prevent them from establishing their own territory. All the species of the L. pentadactylus group may build their foam nests within excavated basins. The basins may protect the eggs and embryos from cannibalistic tadpoles and may have an anti‐desiccation effect. In order to produce trophic eggs, the female may delay laying additional unfertilized eggs until after the male has abandoned the foam nest. Anuran eggs represent an important food item for tadpoles after they leave the nest.  相似文献

The breeding biology and male territorial behaviour of the large-headed leaf-frog (Phyllomedusa megacephala) were studied in three temporary altitudinal streams located in the Cerrado biome of southeastern Brazil, during three consecutive years (2007–2009). Phyllomedusa megacephala showed significant sexual dimorphism, with females being bigger and heavier than males. Acoustic and physical interactions between males defending or not defending territories including amplectant and non-amplectant males, patrolling behaviour by males without established territories, and triple amplexus were observed. Neither males nor females were observed using visual cues when searching for mates. We found that males that were present at breeding sites in previous years bred more successfully and maintained territory better.  相似文献

Ostracods have discontinuous development, marked by ecdyses, and determinate growth. Ontogenetic studies have suggested a pattern of nine postembryonic stages (eight juvenile phases and the adult) for the main freshwater ostracod superfamilies Cypridoidea, Cytheroidea and Darwinuloidea. However, cases of a supposed extra moult in the adult stage have been proposed for some ostracod species, which would amount to 10 postembryonic growth stages. One such example is Elpidium bromeliarum Müller, 1880, a cytheroidean that inhabits tank-bromeliads. The present study is aimed at investigating the ontogenetic development of E. bromeliarum using width and length measurements, as well as carapace and appendage morphology in order to test the existing hypothesis of an additional growth stage in adults of this species. Our results revealed nine postembryonic growth stages (eight juvenile and the adult), with sexual dimorphism beginning its expression in the last juvenile stage. Thus, the ontogenetic development of E. bromeliarum agrees with the overall pattern observed for podocopid ostracods and the hypothesis of 10 postembryonic growth stages was not corroborated. We argue that the inability to differentiate juveniles from adults, or different species from one another, may have misled to the assumption of an additional moult in E. bromeliarum.  相似文献
