Predictive modeling of geographic distribution based on ecological niche has become an important tool in ecology. It uses previous information about distribution of species and environmental variations associated with this distribution, restricting to the models the closest prediction of the ecological niche. The eumastacid grasshoppers are distributed mainly in the Neotropical region, and Temnomastacinae is the subfamily with the largest geographic distribution. Little is known about the biology of Eumastacidae, the only data available reporting the association between some grasshopper species and plants of several families. In the Cerrado only Temnomastax is recorded, which has a wide distribution in the central region of Brazil. The aim of this work was to determine the potential geographic distribution of three species of Temnomastax occurring in the Cerrado biome. We used 446 records of occurrence obtained in specialised literature, inventories, museums and photographs, from the following species: Temnomastax hamus, Temnomastax ricardoi and Temnomastax tigris. The niche modeling was generated with the bioclimatic model DOMAIN through DIVA-GIS. The potential geographic distribution of T. hamus is the largest among all Temnomastax species. Temnomastax ricardoi has its potential distribution in the central-north of Mato Grosso do Sul, in regions surrounding the type locality, while T. tigris. exhibits a restricted potential distribution along the carbonate arc of the Corumbá Formation, which outcrops in the region of Serra da Bodoquena and Corumbá, entering the eastern portion of Bolivia.  相似文献

The invasive alien Cuban treefrog Osteopilus sepentrionalis is native to Cuba, the Bahamas and some adjacent islands. It was accidentally introduced to Florida, Puerto Rico and some Hawaiian islands, where it has become a predator and competes with native wildlife. We have used a maximum entropy ecological niche modelling approach to model its potential spread derived from current climate conditions as present in its native geographic distribution and we project that model into future climate change scenarios in order to detect new areas that are potentially threatened. Our model, applying current climatic conditions, suggested high probabilities of occurrence in countries around the Gulf of Mexico. Projections of potential distribution under future anthropogenic global warming scenarios suggest an overall extension of the potential distribution. If the predictive maps are interpreted as depicting the invasive potential of O. septentrionalis, strategies to prevent further invasion should focus on biosafety measures within the areas highlighted.  相似文献

We used ecological niche modelling projected as species' potential (based on the original vegetation map) and extant (based on the 2000 land use and vegetation map) distributions to analyse changes on patterns of endemism of terrestrial mammals occurring in Mexico. Based on the biogeographic method of Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity, we obtained cladograms under scenarios of species' potential distribution (t1) and extant distributions (t2). We found that the resolution of consensus cladogram in t2 was poorer, while there were more geographic synapomorphies in t1, and more autapomorphies in t2 due to a reduction of species' distributions as a consequence of deforestation. We defined a hierarchical regionalization with two regions with the cladogram of t1; a transitional zone, two subregions, five dominions, and 15 provinces. Conversely, the consensus cladogram of t2 had a basal trichotomy, and the position of the Sierra Madre Occidental changed compared with t1. In t1 and t2, the Yucatán Peninsula+Chiapas+Isthmus of Tehuantepec clade was maintained, although in t2 it was separated from the remaining areas of the country. The impact of deforestation on species distributions strongly affected the biogeographic regionalization of terrestrial mammals in Mexico.  相似文献

Facts are given on the preoviposition and oviposition of mated females of A. curvipes. The size, shape, colour, incubation and hatching of eggs are described. The morphology and development of neanides at various stages are described—and compared with some data on the egg and neanide periods of a related species A. phasiana. Egg deposition by the soil mites Trichouropoda (= Oodinychus) ovalis (C.L. Koch and Uroobovella (= Fuscuropoda) marginata (C.L. Koch), egg incubation and hatching behaviour were observed using continuous video-monitoring. The oviposition in both species was found to consist of three distinct phases. In Phase 1, both species engage in pre-ovipositional activity prior to the egg being extruded from the genital opening. Phase 1 lasted approximately 7.5 minutes in T. ovalis and about 6 minutes in U. marginata. Phase 2 involved egg deposition and lasted approximately 2.5 times longer in T. ovalis (88 seconds) than in U. marginata. Egg covering occurs in Phase 3, and in both species lasts about 25 minutes. Incubation time in U. marginata (137 hours) was approximately 30% shorter compared to that of T. ovalis, while the hatching time was 2 times longer (150 min) in the latter species.  相似文献

The structure of two populations of the fiddler crab Uca rapax in two subtropical mangrove habitats near Ubatuba, State of São Paulo, Brazil were compared. The size–frequency distribution, sex ratio, and recruitment were evaluated. Sampling was performed monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 in the Itamambuca and Ubatumirim habitats. Crabs were caught manually for 15?min by two collectors during low tide. The carapace width of each crab was measured with a digital caliper, and the sex and ovigerous state were recorded. The median size of the carapace width of males was greater than that of females at both sites (P<0.05). The median size of the crabs from Itamambuca was larger than at Ubatumirim (P<0.05). Only 28 ovigerous females were obtained from both mangroves, which suggested that females might remain in their burrows during the incubation period. The highest recruitment pulse occurred in winter for both populations, probably as a consequence of high reproductive activity during summer. The sex ratio in the size classes showed an anomalous pattern, with a higher frequency of females in the intermediate size classes. This may be related to a greater energy requirement for reproduction in females, thus delaying growth. The variable environmental conditions to which Uca rapax populations are subject appear to act directly or indirectly on the population, causing variations in growth and reproductive processes in the different populations investigated here.  相似文献

The morphology of the zoea and megalop of Maja crispata are described from laboratory-reared material, and compared with other two spider crabs belonging to the subfamily Majinae, Maja squinado and Maja goltziana, recorded in the same region of the eastern Atlantic. Analysis of the female life history of the poorly studied endemic Balkan lizard species Dinarolacerta mosorensis was conducted on three population samples from Montenegro. One clutch is produced annually. Females mature at body sizes of 56–57 mm snout–vent length (SVL), attained at age 3–4 years. SVL increases with age. The average clutch size ranged from 4.3 to 5.2 eggs, and was significantly positively correlated with maternal SVL in two population samples. There were no trade‐offs between egg size/offspring size and clutch size, nor between variation in egg size/offspring size and maternal SVL. The incubation period averaged 26.5 days, while hatching success in captivity was 72%. Significant positive correlations were found between the hatchling mass and egg mass and size, and also between the hatchling total length and egg width and volume. There was a significant negative relationship between the hatchling mass and incubation duration.  相似文献

The type specimen of Nematodemus lumbricoides von Graff, 1899, is redescribed and fully illustrated. The internal morphology of the worm, which has not previously been reported, confirms that the animal is not a planarian but a heteronemertean. A re-assessment of the species' systematic status indicates that it should be transferred to the genus Baseodiscus as B. lumbridoides (von Graff, 1899) comb. nov.  相似文献

Temperature appears to have pervasive effects on larval development, feeding and movement patterns of tri-spine horseshoe crabs, Tachypleus tridentatus. To investigate how temperature determines their geographic distribution range, we examined the survival rate (SR), survival time (ST) and food intake of subadult T. tridentatus under different temperature levels in a seven-day experiment, followed by a three-day recovery to room temperature at 25°C. Significantly lower SR and ST of subadults were found at 40°C after the end of the seven-day experiment. Meanwhile, SR and ST of individuals at 0°C were negatively affected when the temperature was brought back to 25°C. Mean food intake of the subadults was statistically lower at 0–20°C and 35–40°C compared to that at 25°C and 30°C. After the subsequent three-day recovery to 25°C, only the individuals previously exposed to 15°C and 20°C had recovered to their normal level of feeding activities, but not the other treatment groups. These findings may provide preliminary data on how thermal tolerance determines the present distribution of T. tridentatus, which are found in large numbers around Beibu Gulf (annual temperature variation: 22–30°C), while considerably lower population densities are observed in the colder southern Sea of Japan and warmer seas of Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Thais wutingi, a new species of Muricidae, is described from rocky and mangrove shores in the vicinity of Darwin, northern Australia. It is relatively common where it occurs but the species may have previously been mistaken for T. gradata (Jonas) or T. javanica (Philippi). The new species differs from the latter two species in having a penis with a narrow groove along the greater curvature of the penial base. The larvae of T. wutingi undergo direct development, hatching from egg capsules as crawling juveniles, in contrast to the majority of Thais (s.l.) species found in the tropics which have planktotrophic development. Its mode of development may explain the relatively restricted geographical distribution of this species, which is confined to the north and northwestern coasts of Australia.  相似文献

The islands of Sumatra, Java and Borneo and mainland South-East Asia are encompassed by a shallow marine shelf, the Sunda shelf. The striking faunal similarities between countries bordering the Sunda shelf have been attributed to faunal exchanges across the shelf during Pleistocene glacial maxima when sea levels fell by up to 120 m and the shelf was exposed and drained by large river systems which connected many of today's rivers. The widespread distribution of fish species reflecting extensive faunal exchange across the area is predicted to be observed within species through the broad geographic distribution of genetic lineages. Here I report a discontinuous species distribution across the region for the cyprinid fish, Barbodes gonionotus. Mitochondrial DNA control region sequence and nuclear locus data from populations sampled across the species range, suggest that the present species distribution largely reflects faunal exchanges early in the Pleistocene and that these two regional population groupings have subsequently diverged in isolation. However, the mtDNA data present some evidence for limited genetic dispersal during more recent Pleistocene low sea levels. These results broadly confirm previous work from a catfish species and suggest that freshwater faunal exchanges may have been limited across the region during the Pleistocene despite extended periods during which the Sunda shelf was exposed.  相似文献

We describe the spatial pattern of variation in body size and sexual size dimorphism in the giant spiny frog, Paa spinosa (David, 1875). The study also aims to identify potential factors responsible for geographic morphological variation in the frog. The results indicate that primary production, which positively correlates with precipitation and summer temperature in China, had an important effect on body size of P. spinosa, whereas Bergmann's rule was more efficient to explain the influence of average minimum temperature in January. The species was sexually dimorphic for body size and body shape: the body size, jaw length and forelimb length of males were significantly larger than those of females. Furthermore, the degree of sexual size dimorphism varied geographically, but the relationship between the geographic variation of sexual size dimorphism and the climate was complex. Specifically, absolute sexual size dimorphism was positively correlated with the increased ambient temperature and decreased precipitation.  相似文献

Closely allied spider species Cheiracanthium japonicum and Cheiracanthium lascivum make a closed breeding nest for egg laying and parental care. The nest provides the internal climatic stability required for suitable development of eggs and the physical durability required for protection against intruders. Although the breeding nests of these two spiders are quite similar in structure and appearance, their climatic stability and physical durability seem to be empirically different. Such physical features of the nests of these two spiders were compared based on a balance between the inner and outer air temperature and humidity of the nest as well as on the amount and size of spider silks lining the nest. In addition, the female’s relative energy allocation to egg production versus nest construction was examined based on the number or weight of eggs versus the climatic stability and physical durability of the nest. According to the results, the stability of temperature and humidity was maintained better in the breeding nest of C. japonicum than in that of C. lascivum. Furthermore, the nest of C. japonicum was more strongly constructed, with a greater volume and size of silks, than that of C. lascivum. On the other hand, the number or weight of eggs in relation to the female’s body weight in C. japonicum was smaller than that in C. lascivum. These results suggested that the reproductive effort towards nest construction for the purpose of egg and juvenile care in C. japonicum was larger than that in C. lascivum. In contrast, the effort towards egg production in C. japonicum was smaller than that in C. lascivum. Consequently, it is likely that the structural differences in breeding nests between these two spiders are responsible for the discrepancies in the female’s relative energy allocation to nest construction.  相似文献

We report new distribution and host records of the turtle barnacle Stephanolepas muricata Fischer. Ours is the first study to document this species' occurrence in Mexico and in the Atlantic Ocean (North Carolina, Georgia and Florida: USA). We also present the first record of Smuricata from olive ridley sea turtles, Lepidochelys olivacea (Eschscholtz). We discuss the physical and ecological characteristics associated with the specimens collected and present evidence suggesting the likelihood of chemical mediation between embedding coronuloid barnacles like Smuricata and host turtles. Morphological and genetic data for the Iberian golden‐striped salamander, Chioglossa lusitanica, demonstrate the existence of two groups with southern and northern ranges, connected by a zone of intergradation in central Portugal. Because reproductive isolation between them is incomplete we consider the groups to be subspecies. The type locality of C. lusitanica (Buçaco near Lousã) is situated inside the mixed zone. This necessitates identification of the nominotypical subspecies. We sequenced a fragment of mitochondrial DNA from one of the species' syntypes and we determined what position over a latitudinal transect maximizes the morphological discrimination between the groups. Both approaches indicate that C. lusitanica from Buçaco represents the southern subspecies. A new subspecies of C. lusitanica is described from a northern locality (Valongo near Porto in north‐western Portugal). A lectotype is designated for Chioglossa lusitanica.  相似文献

Summary

Monthly samples of the burrowing mud crab, Macrophthalmus hirtipes (Jacquinot 1853) were collected from February 1978 to April 1979 from a marine inlet, Governors Bay (43°38′S, 172°39′E) and from the Avon-Heathcote Estuary (43°33′S, 172°44′E), New Zealand. The estuarine population was generally unimodal and had an annual cycle of population change sustained by a concentrated summer recruitment. In contrast, the bay population was unimodal and bimodal at different times, and recruitment occurred thoughout the year with no clear peak. Both populations had equal sex ratios and were dominated by immature individuals (crabs?10·0 mm carapace width). Estuarine crabs were generally smaller than marine crabs.

At both sites, ovigerous females were found from late May to early March; the smallest egg-bearing female measured CW 10·0 mm at the estuary and CW 10·5 mm at the bay. Cycles of ovarian and embryological development were similar at the two localities. Three peaks of egg oviposition occurred within one breeding season and mature females were capable of producing successive broods. Fecundity was related exponentially to female carapace width and did not alter during the breeding season. Estuarine females carried more eggs than marine females of similar size. Egg volume was related to time of oviposition and eggs laid at the start of the breeding season were significantly larger than those deposited during the second half; however, estuarine eggs showed less reduction in size at this time than did marine eggs.

Estuarine sediments had higher levels of chlorophyll ‘a’, ATP, and microorganism activity and productivity than marine sediments. As M. hirtipes is a detritus feeder, the differences in food resources are believed to account for the elevated fecundity of estuarine crabs. At the bay, salinities were high with little tidal and seasonal variation, whereas in the estuary sea water was diluted significantly both daily and seasonally. The differences in salinity characteristics between the sites may be affecting larval distribution; recruitment in the estuary was concentrated to the summer and in the bay it was almost continuous.  相似文献

Twenty-five species of Mecoptera, Raphidioptera and Neuroptera were collected from oak trees by pyrethroid fogging between April and October, and the seasonality of these species is discussed. A total of over 1500 specimens of adults and larvae were obtained at an average density of about 0·43/m2. Four of the species of Neuroptera are considered to be relatively uncommon in Britain, yet two of these (Sympherobius pellucidus and Nothochrysa capitata) were caught in large numbers. Apparent dimorphism in Chrysoperla carnea larvae and other difficulties in identifying chrysopid larvae suggest that further work is needed on geographic variation in this group. An analysis of the spatial distribution within the tree canopy indicated that some species show a marked preference to remain near the trunk, possibly for camouflage.  相似文献
