Defensive steroids from a carrion beetle (Silpha americana)

The defensive anal effluent discharged by Silpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15 beta-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5 beta-pregnan-15 beta-ol-3,20-dione (2), 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 15 beta-diol-20-one (3), 5 beta-pregnan-7 beta, 15 beta-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 7 beta, 15 beta-triol-20-one (5), 5 beta-pregnan-16 alpha-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 16 alpha-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds 1 and 6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 microgram level.     

Structure and stereochemistry of brianolide, a new antiinflammatory diterpenoid from the Okinawan gorgonian Briareum sp.

Brianolide (1), a new antiinflammatory diterpenoid of the briarein class, possessing a beta substituent at C-12 (R), has been isolated from the Okinawan gorgonian Briareum sp. Its structure has been established from spectral data in conjunction with a single crystal X-ray analysis.     

Drug interactions in intestinal absorption of 3H-digitoxin in rats.

The absorption of 3H-digitoxin from perfused rat small intestine was inhibited by probenecid (1.0 x 10-2 M), ethacrynic acid (0.5 x 10-3 M), and mersalyl (8.0 x 10-3 M) indicating that digitoxin absorption is at least partly an active process.     

Dial variations in the levels of blood glucose and hepatopancreatic glycogen in the slug,Laevicaulis alte (Ferussac 1821)

Summary InLaevicaulis alte maximal blood glucose level at 00.00 h alternates with minimal level at 12.00 h of the day, while hepatopancreatic glycogen showed an opposite trend. Variations in blood glucose levels are inversely proportional to the corresponding variations in hepatopancreatic glycogen content, while blood glucose level shoots up to a maximum, hepatopancreatic glycogen declines to a minimum and vice versa.Acknowledgment. The Accuracy and Use of Sextants and Watches in Rupert's Land in the 1790s

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the sextants and watches employed at the end of the eighteenth century in surveying Rupert's Land, the vast territory of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), and to discuss their usage and accuracy. The results provide information on the standards of manufacture at the time, on the reliability of the contemporary latitude and longitude of various fur-trading posts, and on the careers of the surveyors themselves. The sextant readings are shown to have a standard deviation of about 20 arcseconds when used in a vertical position to find altitudes of the Sun and stars, and about 40 arcseconds otherwise, for finding lunar distances. Because of the use of artificial horizons, these conclusions imply that, at a 95% (2σ) confidence level, a single determination of latitude is reliable to ±20 arcseconds (600 m on the Earth's surface), of longitude ±20 arcminutes (approximately 60 km in Rupert's Land), and a single determination of local apparent time is reliable to ±3 s. The watches, it appears, could run at a steady rate with errors of less than a minute for a period of a week or two.

Analysis at 20 genetic loci by starch gel electrophoresis of a population from Greece shows that contrary to most accepted views, the outdoor Eastern Mediterranean Short-tailed Mouse (i) does not belong to the same species as the House Mouse (Mus musculus), (ii) is not less distant from the Eastern European semi-species of House Mouse (biochemical group 2) than from the Western and Mediterranean European semi-species (group 1), and (iii) is not more closely related to the outdoor Western Mediterranean Short-tailed Mouse Mus spretus (group 3), than to M. musculus. It represents a new biochemical group (group 4) and deserves a species rank (Mus spicilegus).     

Plurihormonality in the secretory granules of the normal human pituitary. An immunoelectron microscopic study

Normal human autopsy anterior pituitary tissue from 5 cases was embedded in LR White resin and immunolabelled using silver-enhanced 5-nm protein A gold probes. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) were immunolocalised to the level of secretory granule. A two-sided double-labelling method was used to cross-react two hormones at a time with respect to their corresponding antibodies. All possible combinations of the six pituitary hormones were tested. Plurihormonal granules were found that contained LH + FSH, LH + TSH, and FSH + TSH. Each hormone was also found in monohormonal granules. Granule diameter was significantly larger in the pluri as opposed to monohormonal granules.

An agglutinin with unique specificity for N-glycolyl sialic acid residues of thyroglobulin in the hemolymph of a marine crab Scylla serrata (Forskal).

A novel agglutinin with specificity for sialic acid sequence of sugars in thyroglobulin is identified in the hemolymph of Scylla serrata. The physico-chemical characteristics of its binding affinity, such as pH and temperature optima, and cationic requirements are defined. N-glycolyl neuraminic acid (NeuGc) (at 0.6 mM), in contrast to N-acetyl neuraminic acid (NeuAc) (at greater than 5.0 mM), is the potent inhibitor of hemagglutination. Bovine and porcine thyroglobulins containing NeuGc, inhibited the agglutination. NeuGc-acid glycoprotein fraction (bovine) but not NeuAc-acid glycoprotein fraction (human) inhibited the hemagglutination. The inability of other NeuGc-glycoproteins (bovine submaxillary mucin) to inhibit the agglutination suggests that the agglutinin may also recognize glycosidic linkage associated with NeuGc. The potential of the agglutinin in identifying NeuGc containing human tumor associated antigens is discussed.     

Effect of pulsing electromagnetic fields on DNA synthesis in mammalian cells in culture

DNA synthesis in Chinese hamster V79 cells was significantly enhanced when they were exposed to weak, pulsing electromagnetic fields generated by specific combinations of the pulse width (25 microseconds), frequency (10, 100 Hz) and magnetic intensity (2 X 10(-5), 8 X 10(-5) T). Conversely the DNA synthesis of cells in the fields at 4 X 10(-4) T was repressed to 80% of that in controls not exposed to the fields.

One-summer-old virus-free carps produce both circulating interferon and neutralizing antibodies when stored at +20 degrees C and injected intraperitonealy with 10(5), 10(6), 10(7) p. f. u. of Spring Viremia of Carp virus per fish: Kinetics and intensity of interferon production are maximum for the highest virus imput (Fig.) and neutralizing antibodies are present in most of the fish 2 1/2 months post infection (Table).     

The role of endosomal-recycling in long-term potentiation

Long-term potentiation (LTP) defines persistent increases in neurotransmission strength at synapses that are triggered by specific patterns of neuronal activity. LTP, the most widely accepted molecular model for learning, is best characterised at glutamatergic synapses on dendritic spines. In this context, LTP involves increases in dendritic spine size and the insertion of glutamate receptors into the post-synaptic spine membrane, which together boost post-synaptic responsiveness to neurotransmitters. In dendrites, the material required for LTP is sourced from an organelle termed the endosomal-recycling compartment (ERC), which is localised to the base of dendritic spines. When LTP is induced, material derived from the recycling compartment, which contains α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionate-type glutamate receptors (AMPARs), is mobilised into dendritic spines feeding the increased need for receptors and membrane at the spine neck and head. In this review, we discuss the importance of endosomal-recycling and the role of key proteins which control these processes in the context of LTP.     

Semi-synthesis of A23187 (calcimycin) analogs

Summary The cleavage of A23187 to give a synthon (4) and the semi-synthesis from (4) of 2 Des-N-methylamino A23187 isomers (7a,b) are described. Choleretic and cholestatic effects of infused bile salts in the rat.

In rats, at low infusion rates taurocholate (TC), taurochenodeoxycholate (TCDC) and taurodeoxycholate (TCD) each produced an increase in bile flow of 20-50%. However, at high infusion rates (5-20 mumoles min-1kg-1) the cholestatic effects of the bile salts were revealed and the relative toxicity of the bile salts was seen to be TDC greater than TCDC greater than TC.     

Influence of brown adipose tissue on deep cervical temperature during sleep in the young rabbit

In young rabbits the slope of the temperature in the deep cervical region close to brown adipose tissue increased during desynchronized sleep at low ambient temperature. No increase occurred at neutral ambient temperature. In control rabbits (after disappearance of brown adipose tissue), the slope of deep cervical temperature did not increase during desynchronized sleep at low or neutral ambient temperatures.     

色谱联用技术在环境和生物样品中痕量超痕量元素形态分析研究进展

随着分析科学的不断发展,常用的元素分析方法,如光谱技术(AES,AFS)和质谱等已不能满足环境和生物样品中痕量、超痕量元素的赋存形态分析。以色谱联用技术为代表的元素形态分析测试技术(如液相色谱-原子光谱联用、色谱-电感耦合等离子质谱联用、毛细管电泳-电喷雾离子化质谱联用技术等)已成为国内外研究的热点。本文扼要的介绍了近年来国内外在环境和生物样品中痕量、超痕量元素砷、硒、汞形态分析的色谱联用技术研究进展,并侧重于样品前处理方法、痕量或超痕量元素的形态分析技术。     

Calcemic responses of Stannius corpuscle extract in parrotsPsittacula psittacula

Summary In parrots (Psittacula psittacula), i.p. injection of Stannius corpuscle extract (10 mg/ml/100 g b.wt) evokes hypocalcemia at 1 h.
