Effect of relative humidity on the free-living stages of Strongyloides papillosus (Rhabdiasoidea: Nematoda)

The eggs and larvae are affected by the changes in the humidity level around them. The eggs do not develop below 87% relative humidity at 30 degrees C and 25 degrees C. At sub-developmental rel. hum. they remain viable for 30 h at 81%, but at 73% rel. hum. level they do not survive beyond 18 h. Survival of larvae in 100% rel. hum. is longer at 30 degrees C than at 25 degrees C and 35 degrees C, and also they exhibit a poor resistance to desiccation.     

Influences of temperature change on the relaxation and amplitude inhibition by noradrenaline in the rabbit jejunum.

In the rabbit jejunum, the elevation of temperature within the range of 25-37 degrees C diminished the sensitivity to noradrenaline (NA) for both the relaxation and amplitude inhibition. The relaxation by NA was mainly mediated via adrenergic beta-receptors at 25, 30 or 37 degrees C. The amplitude inhibition was mediated via alpha-receptors at 37 degrees C, and both alpha- and beta-receptors at 30 or 25 degrees C.     

Isonicotinic acid hydrazide: early effects on peripheral nerve conduction velocity

This report describes the effects of short treatments with isonicotinic acid hydrazide (isoniazid), 300 mg/kg/day, on conduction velocity in the rat tail dorsal nerve trunk. After 6 days of continuous treatment, conduction velocity falls significantly for measurements made at 35 degrees C. After 10 days it falls significantly at both 25 degrees C and 35 degrees C. This appears to be the first electrophysiological corroboration of the early neuropathological changes recently observed in isoniazid treated rats and seems to provide evidence that the temperature at which the experiments are made is important in determining conduction velocity changes.     

Effects of raised and lowered incubation temperatures on the sexual differentiation in the embryos of Emys orbicularis L. (Chelonien)]

Eggs of Emys orbicularis L. were incubated at 18 and 19 degrees 5C during the period of sexual differentiation of the gonads of the embryos; genital glands of testicular structure and retrogressed Müllerian ducts were observed in all cases, like in the embryos issued from eggs incubated at 25 +/- 1 degrees C and 27,5 +/- 0,5 degrees C. On the contrary, the sexual phenotype is female in all the embryos which developed at 35 degrees C, as it is the case between 29 and 30 degrees C.     

Effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone-treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels in the Djungarian hamster, Phodopus sungorus

The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T3 level was affected by temperature (25 degrees C less than 7 degrees C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T4 level was affected by photoperiod (short day less than long day) at 25 degrees C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T4 level under short photoperiod at 25 degrees C. Thus, higher plasma T4 level under long photoperiod at 25 degrees C might be induced by testosterone.     

Effects of thyrotrophic-releasing hormone (TRH) on thermoregulation in the rat

At ambient temperatures (Ta) of both 8 and 22 degrees C, intraventricular administration of TRH (10-80 microgram) produced a dose-dependent hypothermia in rats. The hypothermia was due to both decreased metabolic heat production and cutaneous vasodilatation. In contrast, at 30 degrees C Ta, TRH increased metabolic heat production (due to behavioral excitation) and led to hyperthermia.     

Effect of heat treatment on the ATPase activity of various sarcoplasmic reticulum preparations.

Ca2+-stimulated ATPase activity of sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) preparations is activated after a short period of preincubation at temperatures between 40 and 45 degrees C, but for temperatures higher than 48 degrees C pronounced denaturation is observed. Heat denaturation is decreased if Mg2+ or K+ are present during heat treatment.     

Temperature dependence of neurotransmitter release in the antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki

The quantal contents of endplate potentials from extraocular muscles of an antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki were measured over a range of temperatures. Quantal release was maximal at about 5 degrees C but showed little dependence on temperature between -2 degrees C and 10 degrees C. Above 10 degrees C quantal content declined until release ceased about 18 degrees C. In view of the fact that the ambient temperature at which these fish live is constant at -1.9 degrees C, the results suggest that Pagothenia borchgrevinki is only partially adapted to its environment despite 25 million years acclimatization.     

Hypothalamic histamine modulates adaptive behavior of rats at high environmental temperature

Histamine content in the rat hypothalamus was lower at 4 degrees C and higher at 31 degrees C compared to that at 21 degrees C. Pretreatment with alpha-fluoromethylhistidine, a 'suicide' inhibitor of histamine decarboxylase, attenuated both the increased level of hypothalamic histamine and rat adaptive behavior at 31 degrees C. Increase of histamine content in the hypothalamus appears to be an important factor contributing to rat adaptive behavior to high environmental temperature.     

Effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of certain Nigerian foods

The effects of storage and processing on the nutritive value of two Nigerian foods--raw cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) flour and palm oil, have been investigated. Increased retention of both thiamine and riboflavin as a result of increased water activity (Aw) were recorded for cowpea flour stored for 6 months. A storage temperature of 5 degrees C led to minimal losses of both vitamins in the stored flour. Differences in physico-chemical characteristics were observed between palm oil produced by the traditional method and that produced by a modern commercial method. Increasing Aw led to decreasing loss of unsaturation in the traditionally-produced palm oil during 4-week storage at ambient temperature (25 degrees C).     

Hyperthermia after intrahypothalamic injections of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) in the pigeon

Thermoregulatory responses to intrahypothalamic injections of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) were recorded from unanesthetized pigeons exposed to 6 degrees C, 20 degrees C and 32 degrees C. Our results suggest that TRH is a non-specific excitatory neuromodulator or neurotransmitter for heat production in the pigeon.     

Media and methods for isolation of aeromonads from fecal specimens. A multilaboratory study

An international multilaboratory study was conducted to establish the optimal combination of culture media, incubation time and temperature for recovery of aeromonads from stools using blood ampicillin (10 mg/l) agar (BAA), starch ampicillin (10 mg/l) agar (SAA), and cefsulodin irgasan novobiocin agar (CIN) with alkaline peptone water (APW) for enrichment. Optimal recovery of aeromonads (167/186) occurred using BAA (37 degrees C; 24 h) and CIN (25 degrees C; 48 h) with APW (25 degrees C; 24 h) subcultured to BAA (37 degrees C; 24 h) and CIN (25 degrees C; 48 h).     

Effects of temperature on the bioaccumulation of cadmium by the crayfish Ponstacus leptodactylus. Microanalysis by X-ray spectrography and secondary ion emission

Low temperatures (10 +/- 1 degrees C) induce a rapid entry of cadmium into the body across the gills and gut; higher temperatures (20 +/- 1 degrees C) induce a medium and long term absorption and storage of the metal in the digestive gland and its long term accumulation in the exoskeleton. From a methodical point of view, electron microprobe appears more suitable than secondary ion emission microanalysis for the detection of cadmium.     

Calorimetric studies on monomeric and polymeric actin

Differential scanning calorimetry of polymeric F-actin at pH 8.0 showed that the polymer had a concentration-independent thermal profile with a single transition temperature of 81 degrees C. In contrast, the thermal profile of G-actin was concentration-dependent, and although it resembled the F-actin profile at lower concentrations, it was found to have a more complex profile at higher protein concentrations.     

Negative inotropic effect of some H2-receptor antagonists on the isolated human atria

H2-Receptor antagonists were found to possess in various degrees a negative inotropic effect on human atria in vitro. This effect seemed to be independent of H2-receptor blockade and, at least in the case of oxmetidine, seemed to involve calcium ion transport and/or utilization.     

Acute cold exposure increases the glucagon sensitivity of thermogenic metabolism in the rat

Administration of glucagon to rats at 25 degrees C had no effect upon their VO2, while administration of noradrenaline or noradrenaline plus glucagon raised the VO2. At 5 degrees C, noradrenaline had no effect upon the cold-enhanced VO2, while glucagon caused a rise of 13.7%, implying increased glucagon sensitivity at 5 degrees C. The glucagon-induced enhancement of VO2 was abolished by concurrent administration of noradrenaline.     

Effects of temperature on K, Na and water movements in isolated hepatocytes]

Isolated hepatocytes incubated at 1 degrees C loss K, gain Na and water. Rewarming results in a transient increase in K and Na permeabilities. These are insensitive to quinine, suggesting that they are not caused by an intracellular Ca accumulation.     

Investigations on the toxic effects of Bayer 73 (bayluscid WP) on eggs and yolk-sac larvae ofTilapia leucosticta (Cichlidae)

Summary The toxic effect of Bayer 73 on larvae ofTilapia leucosticta shows a sharp increase from the day of hatching to the end of the yolk-sac stage. Different degrees of deformity appear in the course of development.This work was undertaken with the aid of Prof. Dr E. Kulzer.     

Influence of hydrocortisone on cytopathic effect of Newcastle disease virus and stability to freezing of vescicular stomatitis virus.

The presence of hydrocortisone in virus-infected cell cultures leads to enhancement of the syncytia forming ability of Newcastle disease virus and to production of vescicular stomatitis virus particles which loose their infectivity upon storage below 0 degrees C.     

Dependence on the lipophilicity of maleimide derivatives in their inhibitory action upon chemotaxis in neutrophils.

Modification of polymorphonuclear neutrophils by a series of maleimide derivatives with various degrees of lipophilicity and hydrophilicity indicated that hydrophilic reagents had little effect on chemotaxis, whereas the degree of the inhibitory effect of lipophilic reagents on the chemotaxis was parallel to the degree of their lipophilicity.
