Summary The ability to accumulate lipids was investigated in two strains of hydrogen oxidizing bacteria (Hydrogenomonas H 16 and strain 11/x). Along with the deposition of poly--hydroxybutyrate the amount of other lipids is shown to increase 1.8 times in strain H 16. It is suggested that the increase of the latter lipids is due to the formation of membrane lipids that are needed for the formation of membranes around the intracellular globules of poly--hydroxybutyrate. In strain 11/x the amount of lipids increases 7 times along with the storage of carbohydrates. In this case, the majority of lipids consists of triglycerides. It is suggested that there is a true storage of neutral fat in strain 11/x.

Summary Experiments on isolated perfused suprarenals have shown that the injection of thrombin caused a significant rise in the liberation of catechol amines. The specific thrombin-inhibitor, Hirudin, was able to abolish the thrombin effect. When isolated medullary granules from suprarenals were incubated with thrombin, no increase of catechol amine release was observed.

Summary The anti-inflammatory action of Cortisone and Phenylbutazone (Butazolidin-Geigy, TM.), as demonstrated e.g. on the formalin oedema of rats, is abolished after extirpation of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. This result seems to indicate a participation of the incretory organs mentioned on the anti-inflammatory mechanism of these products.

Summary The effect of 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) on the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-isoenzymes was studied in human fibroblast cultures. 3 isoenzyme components were separated by discelectrophoresis. A clear reduction in the enzymeactivity of the first and third component was observed, while the other fraction was little or not affected. The incorporation of radioactive amino acids in proteins of the LDH-isoenzyme bands shows the same trend.

Summary Ascites tumour cells have been employed to study the reactivity of Zn⁺⁺ on nucleic acid biosynthesis. 10^–4 M Zn⁺⁺ caused a selective inhibition of DNA synthesis of intact cells. The rate of RNA- and protein-biosynthesis, however, remained unchanged. The activity of DNA polymerase as well as DNA dependent RNA polymerase was strongly affected by Zn⁺⁺ in vitro.

Summary The uricosuric drug benzbromarone inhibits a number of membrane-bound mitochondrial enzymes. A strong inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase, -glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and pyridinnucleotide transhydrogenase was found (approximately 28, 48, 45 M benzbromarone for 50% inhibition respectively). Some possible consequences of these results for the lipid metabolism in patients during benzbromarone are discussed.

Summary In experiments on cats cough reflexes were elicited by mechanical stimuli applied to the mucosa of the tracheobronchial tree. Narcotine was found to diminish or to depress the cough reflex in doses of 0.1–1.0 mg/kg and was thus about as effective as codeine. On the bronchial muscles narcotine produced no effect or a bronchodilatation whereas codeine produced a bronchoconstrictor effect. As an isochinoline derivative narcotine should not be liable to cause addiction.

Summary A post-incubation with 1% sulfanilic acid solution in 10% CH₃COOH (approx. 2–10 min) or 5–10% potash alum or 0.5 mol AlCl₃ in 0, 1n HCl-after the histochemical reaction with diazonium salt-prevents N₂ formation. This gas originates from decomposition of tissue adsorbed diazonium salt which occurs after mounting in glycerin jelly. The inhibition of diazo-group disintegration depends, in the case of sulfanilic acid, on the formation of a diazoamino compound or double salt production with aluminium ions in the case of AlCl₃.
