Suppressor effect induced by sodium periodate on the antibody response of mouse splenic cells in vitro : inhibition of this effect by sodium borohydride]

Mild oxidation of mouse spleen cells by sodium periodate induces blastogenesis. Concomitantly, the in vitro response of these cells to sheep red blood cells is inhibited. Exposure of spleen cells to sodium borohydride following periodate treatment reduces blastogenesis and restores the immune response.     

Mitotic activity in the rat palatal shelves during their fusion in vitro]

Rat palatal shelves explanted on gestational day 15 or 16 are cultivated with their medial-edge epithelial surface in contact. Observations of histological sections showed that, before and during the fusion of the processes, mitotic activity is always lower in the epithelium of the expected fusion zone (EFZ) than in the oral epithelium and progressively decreases during the processus of the fusion.     

Ultrastructural aspects of the cell fusion induced by Visna virus on sheep choroid plexus cell in culture]

Sheep choroid plexus cells infected with low multiplicities of infection of Visna Virus were stellate and had long and thin processes containing filaments and forming cytoplasmic bridges between adjacent cells. Enlargement of the bridges resulted in the formation of multinucleated cells. Some glycoproteins were clustered on filaments outside the cell. The cytoplasmic changes showed : an intensive protein synthesis; numerous mitochondria closely associated with filaments and some lysosomes and numerous vesicules near the plasma membrane.     

Testosterone metabolism by mouse placenta in vitro

Zusammenfassung 4-C¹⁴-Testosteron wurde durch Mäuseplazenta in vitro zu Steroiden umgesetzt: 3-Hydroxy-5-androstan-3, 17-dion, 3-Hydroxy-5-androstan-3, 17-dion, 4-Androsten-3, 17-dion und 5-Androstan-3, 17-dion. Eine Umsetzung von Testosteron zu Östrogenen wurde nicht nachgewiesen.     

Inhibition by the enterotoxin of Vibrio cholerase of meiosis reinitiation of the Xenopus laevis oocyte induced in vitro by progesterone]

Progesterone reinitiates in vitro meiosis in Xenopus laevis oocytes. This action of the hormone can be abolished by the exotoxin of vibrio cholerae. The concentration of toxin which inhibits 50% of the progesterone (10 muM) action in about 2.5 pM. Binding experiments using 125I labelled toxin demonstrated the existence of high affinity binding sites (KD approximately 0.2 nM) located probably on the surface of the oocytes.     

Autophagy in mouse hepatocytes induced by lysine acetylsalicylate

Summary I.v. administration of lysine acetylsalicylate inces autophagy in mouse liver cells. Single and multiple membrane-bounded vacuoles were found. The latter seems to be an unusual morphological form of the sequestration process. These findings could express a transitory sublethal liver cell injury induced by the drug.Acknowledgments. Steroid metabolism by mouse preimplantation embryos in vitro

Summary Mouse preimplantation embryos were incubated with radioactive pregnenolone, progesterone or dehydroepiandrosterone for various periods of time. These substrates were not converted to metabolites even after incubation of 120 h. We suggest that preimplantation mouse embryo does not possess enzyme activities for steroid metabolism.Acknowledgments. The authors would like to thank Prof. L. Mitochondrial swelling induced by unconjugated bilirubin in vitro

Riassunto Gli Autori hanno studiato, per mezzo del microscopio in contrasto di fase e del microscopio a contrasto di fase interferenziale, le modificazioni della morfologìa dei mitocondri di cellule coltivate in vitro e sottoposte all'azione della bilirubina non coniugata. Questo pigmento biliare induce, dopo 15 min di contatto con le cellule, la perdita della motilità mitocondriale e dopo 30 min un evidente rigonfiamento dei mitocondri. Viene discussa l'interpretazione dei risultati sulla base dei dati morfològici e biochimici ottenuti da altri Autori su mitocondri isolati.     

Comparison of exogenous cell fusion induced by a wild and two mutant strains of sheep Visna virus]

Exogen cell fusion induced in vitro by a wild strain of Visna virus of Sheep is compared with two mutant strains isolated from the precedent. One of them produces large plaques in vitro (strain LPF), and the other produces small plaques (strain SPF). These strains behave in different ways according to infection multiplicity, type of cells, temperature and timing of fusing activity. Taking the wild strain K 796 as a base of reference, the strain SPF seems to have a higher rate fusing activity and the strain LPF lower rate of fusing activity.

The developing molar tissues of the lower jaw of 13, 14 and 15 day Mouse embryos were removed and cultured in vitro. Complete molar dentition differentiated.     

Genetic activity of mouse oocytes during in vitro "spontaneous" maturation]

Mouse oocytes, liberated from ovarian follicles, resume meiosis in the obligatory presence of Ca++. PHMPS exerts a toxic effect on this mechanism. m-RNA synthesis, in contrast to that of r-RNA. seems to be required during the first hours of maturation in order to ensure realization of the following steps: in addition the 2nd maturation period, corresponding to the first polar body extrusion, depends on the presence of proteins synthesized during the chromatin condensation process and germinal vesicle breakdown. We suggest that it might be a factor responsible for microtubule formation in metaphase I.

In vitro transmission of mouse leukemia virus to restrictive mouse cells: necessity for mixed infection by two different leukemia viruses]

The plaque formation of murine leukemia virus (MuLV) in non permissive mouse cells (N-tropic MuLV in B-type cells, or B-tropic MuLV in N-type cells) was increased by murine sarcoma virus whose plaque-forming activity was extremely low (MuSV XC-). The infection of N-tropic MuLV in B-type cells was increased by MuSV XC- propagated only in N-type cells but not in B-type cells, and the infection of B-tropic MuLV in N-type cells by MuSV XC- propagated only in B-type cells but not in N-type cells.
