Influence of thiol-inhibiting substances on the effects of ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) on chromosomes

Résumé Des semences d'orge et des graines de fèverolle ont été traitées par des solutions de sublimé corrosif et d'un arsénoxyde avant traitement par du méthane sulfonate d'éthyl. Chacun des ions accroît considérablement les effets de l'EMS sur les chromosomes d'une manière dépendant du pH, de la concentration en ions et de la concentration en EMS.     

Reduction of biological substances by water-soluble phosphines: Gamma-globulin (IgG)

Résumé Deux composés polypeptides sont formés par la réduction de la gamma-globuline par des phosphines tertiaires hydrosolubles; réduction qui s'opère à de plus faibles concentrations des phosphines que du 2-mercaptoéthanol. Avec ces 2 méthodes, les produits de la réaction sont comparables. De plus, les phosphines peuvent inactiver le facteur rheumatoïde, tel que le révèle l'agglutination au latex.     

The scent scale substances of malePieris butterflies (Pieris melete andPieris napi)

Summary 7 monoterpenes, -pinene, -pinene, myrcene, p-cymene, limonene, neral and geranial, were identified together with n-undecane in the scent scales ofP. melete, and also, together with considerable amounts of linalool, in the scent scales ofP. napi. Content ratio of neral to geranial inP. melete ranged from 0.77 to 1.04, and that inP. napi from 1.84 to 2.43. The present chemotaxonomic approach shows the 2 species ofPieris to be distinct.The authors thank Dr T. Influence of pinealectomy on corticotropin (ACTH)

Sensory deprivation produced by removing the eyes and olfactory bulbs in male rats allowed pinealectomy to markedly augment the post-adrenalectomy elevation of ACTH levels. Pineal removal or sensory deprivation separately did not have this effect. Thus, intact sensory input and an intact pineal gland are independently capable of restricting the post-adrenalectomy rise in ACTH levels.

Isolation of the two paragonial substances deposited into the spermatophores ofAcanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera,Bruchidae)

Summary Aqueous extracts from spermatophores ofAcanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) have been chromatographed on Sephadex G 25 and G 15 columns, the active fractions being further purified by preparative SiO₂ TLC. The isolation and properties of 2 biologically active compounds are reported. The paragonial substance A has a favourable action upon oogenesis, is a low molecular weight molecule (500–1000) and gives 1 single amino acid on hydrolysis, corresponding to glycin on TLC. The paragonial substance B is toxic, or an inhibitor of oogenesis at lower concentration, thus showing an antagonistic effect.     

Defensive substances of opilionids

Summary The defensive secretions of 4 species of opilionids were analyzed.Leiobunum ventricosum andHadrobunus maculosus produce 4-methylheptan-3-one, whileL. calcar produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-octen-3-one.L. longipes produces E-4,6-dimethyl-6-nonen-3-one, a new natural product.Paper No. 51 of the seriesDefensive Mechanisms of Arthropods.Acknowledgments. Increase in the total reducing substances in the hemolymph of the freshwater crab,Barytelphusa guerini,produced by a pesticide (DDT) and an indolealkylamine (serotonin)

Summary DDT and serotonin produced significant increases in the total reducing substances in the hemolymph of intact crabs,Barytelphusa guerini, apparently by triggering release of the hyperglycemic hormone.     

Influence of (-)3-hydroxy-N-propargyl-morphinan on the respiratory depressant action of codeine

Zusammenfassung Es wird festgestellt, dass Ro 1-7780 die atemdepressive Wirkung von Codein aufhebt. Die Dosis muss zweimal so gross wie die von Levallorphan sein. Das Dosisverhältnis zwischen Ro 1-7780 und Codein ist 1:50 bis 1:75.
