Summary Emblica officinalis reduced serum cholesterol (p<0.001), aortic cholesterol (p<0.001) and hepatic cholesterol (p<0.001) significantly in rabbits.Emblica officinalis did not influence euglobulin clot lysis time, platelet adhesiveness or serum triglyceride levels.  相似文献

Forty-one apparently healthy businessmen and-women and an equal number of government workers matched for age and sex underwent serum cholesterol determinations. The mean serum cholesterol levels of businessmen and-women were significantly higher than those of their government worker counterparts (p<0.001). The marked increase in the serum cholesterol of the business subjects was attributed to their overindulgence and/or eating habits and lack of physical activity. The cardiovascular risk implications of the high cholesterol value and other risk co-factors such as obesity and alcoholism observed among the business subjects are highlighted. We advise that for communities similar to the one described here, public enlightenment programmes about the health benefits of periodic medical assessment and recreational physical activities are necessary. A further comprehensive study of lipid, lipoprotein and other risk factors in these subjects should be encouraged.  相似文献

HLA phenotypes of 13 patients surviving in lasting first remission over 6 years after BCG immunotherapy for acute childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) were compared to phenotypes of normal subjects and of surviving ALL patients treated exclusively with chemotherapy. Among the BCG-treated patients, the frequency of the antigen HLA-BW 17 was 46.1% vs 7.3% in healthy controls (p less than 0.001) and the frequency of the antigen HLA-AW 33 was 30.8% vs 1.2% (p less than 0.001). 9 patients possessed at least one of these two antigens (69.2% vs 8% in controls p less than 0.001). Phenotypes of the chemotherapy-treated patients did not differ significantly from controls. These results suggest the existence in humans of HLA-linked genes which are involved in the response to BCG immunotherapy in ALL.  相似文献

Blood and breast cyst fluid were drawn simultaneously for hormonal determination. There was no difference between serum and cyst fluid values of PRL and TSH. Adult, male rats were exercised in the heat until hyperthermic exhaustion ensued. Plasma aldosterone levels were significantly (p less than 0.001) elevated after 8 min of exercise and remained increased throughout the exercise and recovery periods. Alternatively, plasma angiotensin I levels were unaffected during exercise, but increased significantly (p less than 0.001) during the recovery period. These rapid elevations in hormonal levels may be part of a sympathicoadrenal response to heat/exercise stress as well as an adaptational response to maintain plasma volume during and following exercise in the heat.  相似文献

Feeding a marginally low iron content diet (18-20 mg iron/kg diet) to weaned (21-day-old) rats for 8 weeks produced a significant decrease in liver non-heme iron (66%, p less than 0.001) but no change in blood hemoglobin. Total iron contents of liver (56%, p less than 0.01), spleen (20%, p less than 0.05), and kidney (19%, p less than 0.05) were also found to decrease along with increased zinc, copper, calcium, manganese lead and cadmium in various organs. The magnitude of alteration of a metal was different in different organs. However, liver was found to be the most affected organ. Two weeks of rehabilitation with iron-sufficient diet (390 mg iron/kg diet) normalized these altered levels.  相似文献

Evidence that miRNAs are different from other RNAs   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
An examination of 513 known pre-miRNAs and 237 other RNAs (tRNA, rRNA, and mRNA) revealed that miRNAs were significantly different from other RNAs (p < 0.001). miRNA genes were less conserved than other RNA genes, although their mature miRNA sequences were highly conserved. The A+U content of pre-miRNAs was higher than non-coding RNA (p < 0.001), but lower than mRNAs. The nucleotides in pre-miRNAs formed more hydrogen bonds and base pairs than in other RNAs. miRNAs had higher negative adjusted minimal folding free energies than other RNAs except tRNAs (p < 0.001). The MFE index (MFEI) was a sufficient criterion to distinguish miRNAs from all coding and non-coding RNAs (p < 0.001). The MFEI for miRNAs was 0.97, significantly higher than tRNAs (0.64), rRNAs (0.59), or mRNAs (0.65). Our findings should facilitate the prediction and identification of new miRNAs using computational and experimental strategies. Summary After single i.p. application of 300 mg/kgd-galactosamine-hydrochloride in male conventional Wistar-II-rats, the concentration of serum cholesterol esters and serum lysolecithin decreases in statistical significance, serum lecithin increases slightly. Because the relation of esterified serum cholesterol to total serum cholesterol increases, it may be that the significant decrease of the cholesterol ester fraction, induced by the slight galactosamine-liver injury, is not only effected by transacylation-inhibition in plasma.

Wide variations have been found in the responsiveness to (1-24)ACTH of Mongolian gerbil adrenal glands superfused in vitro. These variations were not correlated to corticosteroid plasma levels or to adrenal weights. In contrast, (1-24)ACTH-stimulated secretion greatly depended on basal in vitro secretion (quarters: r = 0.97, p less than 0.01; slices: r = 0.90, p less than 0.001) indicating that the fine adjustment of basal corticosteroidogenesis forms an important part of the regulatory mechanisms modulating (1-24)ACTH-stimulated corticosteroid secretion in vitro.  相似文献

Horse serum (HS) supported growth and differentiation of blastocysts as well as or better than fetal bovine serum (FBS) (p less than 0.01) as measured by a) the onset of trophoblastic outgrowth, b) the size of the resultant outgrowths, c) the size of nuclei in trophoblasts after their outgrowth and d) the size of the inner cell mass in outgrowths. Moreover, polyamines were found to be approximately 10-100 times less toxic to embryos when added to medium containing HS than when the medium contained FBS.  相似文献

The effect of cold or isolation stress on mortality rate and brain virus level were investigated in mice infected with West Nile virus (WNV). Exposure of mice for 5 min/day to cold water (1 +/- 0.5 degrees C) for 8-10 days resulted in 92% mortality as compared to 47% in control mice (p less than 0.001). Mice housed in individual cages (isolation stress) were also more susceptible to WN viral infection, as shown by increased mortality rate reaching 85% as compared to 50% in mice housed 6 per cage (p less than 0.01). Cold or isolation stress increased blood brain and spleen virus levels as early as 2 days after inoculation. After 8 days of isolation or cold stress, mice inoculated with WNV had 8.9 and 9.0 log10 plaque forming units in the brain, respectively, as compared to 6.9 in the control (p less than 0.01-0.001). Furthermore, lymphoid organs such as spleen and thymus showed severe mass loss. These data suggest that physical or non-physical stress situations enhance WNV encephalitis by accelerating virus proliferation and increase mortality in mice.  相似文献

Intestinal tissue mass was significantly reduced throughout the gastrointestinal tract (p less than 0.001) of intravenously fed (TPN) rats. Urogastrone-epidermal growth factor, (URO-EGF), reversed these changes. Although plasma enteroglucagon and gastrin levels showed a small increase with URO-EGF, this was far less than the gut tissue weight change, suggesting that it was unlikely that they were involved in modulating the proliferative response of the intestine to URO-EGF. Peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY) levels were however significantly increased by URO-EGF, indicating that PYY may possibly have a role in the modulation of intestinal cell proliferation.  相似文献

We compared the effects of 0.45% normal saline (NS), 5% Intralipid® (IL), and 16.7% glucose (Glu) infusions on total serum triglycerides and cholesterol, serum high-(HDL-c) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and activity of serum lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), and serum lipoprotein lipase (LPL) in rats implanted with a fibrosarcoma. In tumor-bearing rats given NS, a two-fold increase in total serum cholesterol, a four-fold increase in LDL-c, and a five-fold decrease in the HDL-c/LDL-c ratio were observed compared to tumor-free rats. In tumor-bearing rats administered IL, a two-fold increase in total serum triglyceride and cholesterol, a three-fold increase in HDL-c and HDL-c/LDL-c ratio, and a two-fold increase in LPL activity were observed compared to tumor-bearing rats administered NS. In tumor-bearing rats administered Glu, a two-fold decrease in total serum cholesterol, a two-fold decrease in HDL-c, and a three-fold decrease in LDL-c were observed compared to tumor-bearing rats administered NS. Tumor weights and LCAT activity did not differ significantly between treatment groups. Previous results have demonstrated that lipophilic compounds that interact with plasma lipoproteins have altered pharmacological effects when administered with IL. Therefore, this study suggests that IL infusions alter the HDL-c/LDL-c ratio and could affect the pharmacological behavior of anticancer compounds that predominantly distribute into the LDL fraction upon entrance into the bloodstream.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to elucidate the role of central catecholamines in regulating catecholamine metabolism in the vas deferens and adrenal gland of the rat. Rats were injected intracerebroventricularly (i.c.v.) with either vehicle or 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Groups of animals pretreated with vehicle or 6-OHDA (i.c.v.) were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine (AMT), a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor. Catecholamine turnover rates were estimated by determining norepinephrine or epinephrine content after administering AMT. Central norepinephrine and dopamine contents decreased significantly (p less than 0.05) after treatment with 6-OHDA and AMT. The norepinephrine content of the vas deferens of rats pretreated with 6-OHDA was markedly reduced (p less than 0.001) after administration of AMT, whereas that of the vehicle-treated rats remained unchanged. Administration of 6-OHDA had no effect on the norepinephrine or epinephrine content of the adrenal gland. The present results indicate that central monoaminergic neurons have an inhibitory effect on the adrenergic neurons of the vas deferens. In contrast, this inhibitory regulation does not appear to be exerted on the adrenal glands.  相似文献

Administration of garlic oil (100 mg/kg b. wt/day) for 1 month together with the HF-HC diet to another group almost nullified the lipid-increasing and albumin-decreasing effects of that diet. The reduction in total lipids, cholesterol and triglycerides and the restoration to normal level of serum albumin were highly significant in the garlic oil group. Adult rats were subjected to either a sham operation (S-rats) or a 60% partial pancreatectomy (P-rats). Both P- and S-rats were normoglycemic and normoinsulinemic after surgery. Four weeks later, the animals were injected i.v. with 1 ml of either 0.9% (w/v) saline or 30% (w/v) D-glucose, and after 5 min whole pancreatic blood flow (PBF) and islet blood flow (IBF) were measured, using a microsphere technique. In the saline-injected P-rats both PBF and IBF values were higher than in S-rats (p less than 0.001 for both values). Administration of glucose had no effects on PBF in either S- or P-rats when compared to saline-injected animals. IBF was, however, markedly increased (p less than 0.01) by glucose in S-rats in comparison with saline-injected S-rats, whilst no difference in IBF was observed between glucose- and saline-injected P-rats. The fraction of PBF diverted through the islets (fIBF) was approximately 10% in S-rats and 20% in P-rats. Glucose increased fIBF in S-rats, but had no effect in P-rats. In conclusion, in S-rats a glucose-stimulated insulin release is accompanied by an increase in IBF, but this is not observed in P-rats.  相似文献

The primary objective of this review was to assess the size and consistency of Royal Jelly (RJ) effect on serum lipids in experimental animals and humans. The data from animal studies were pooled, where possible, and statistically evaluated by Student's t-test. Meta-analysis was used for the evaluation of human trials. It was found that RJ significantly decreased serum and liver total lipids and cholesterol levels in rats and rabbits and also retarded the formation of atheromas in the aorta of rabbits fed a hyperlipemic diet. Meta-analysis of the controlled human trials of RJ to reduce hyperlipidemia showed a significant reduction in total serum lipids and cholesterol levels and normalization of HDL and LDL as determined from decrease in β/α lipoproteins. The best available evidence suggests that RJ at approximately 50 to 100 mg per day, decreased total serum cholesterol levels by about 14%, and total serum lipids by about 10% in the group of patients studied.  相似文献

The production of testosterone (measured by radioimmuno-assay) by the 18-day-old mouse fetal testis may be stimulated specifically by ovine LH (1 ng, p less than 0.005) and HCG in organ culture. A stimulation by FSH is observed only with high doses (10 mug, p less than 0.0005). Prolactin and ACTH have no effect. Summary Effect of preoperative stress on serum cholesterol level in 65 patients of different age groups in a surgical ward, has been studied. In all age groups, statistically significant rise of cholesterol in serum preoperatively was noticed as compared with serum cholesterol level at the time of discharge from hospital. The preoperative rise of cholesterol varied from 39 to 56.9% in this series.
