Summary The influence on the development of the outer segments of the rat retina of far red and red light in different sequences was investigated. The far red treatment appeared to be dominating, and for animals treated with far red light first, further treatment of red light could not bring the outer segment growth back to normal. The treatments also initiated different dopamine uptakes in the retinas.  相似文献

Summary Night N-acetyltransferase activity is suppressed by red and white light; the red light intensity, however, must be 10 times higher. Diurnal shedding by retinal rods was studied in wild cutthroat trout,Oncorhyncus clarki, hatchery rainbow trout,Oncorhyncus mykiss, and the plains killifish,Fundulus zebrinus, by counting the shed tips of rod outer segments ingested as phagosomes by pigment epithelial cells. After sunrise, phagosomes increased in all species, but fewer occurred in trout, and these were elevated from 3 to 9 hours after sunrise. Shedding occurred earlier in the light period and was more robust in killifish, with phagosomes elevated from 1.5 to 6 hours after sunset. The data suggest that both production of phagosomes by shedding and their subsequent disposal are slower at the lower temperatures experienced by trout. Otherwise, rod shedding produced under natural lighting is not appreciably different than that provoked by sudden onset of artificial light.  相似文献

Summary Sham-pinealectomy, performed under different light conditions in newborn and adult rats, is followed by changes of pineal activity resulting in variations of melatonin content. The pineal glands of rats sham-operated under white light produce significantly less melatonin. In contrast, glands of rats operated on under red light show a melatonin content corresponding to that of intact rats. This result implies that normal white light causes a disturbance in melatonin production by a non-retinal pathway.  相似文献

Summary Glucose utilization, lactate production and glutathione regeneration were measured in the red blood cells of 2 species of Australian Marsupials, Eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus gigantus) and red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), and were found to be significantly lower in the red blood cells from grey than that of red kangaroos.The author wishes to thank Mrs T. The influence of mycorrhizal colonization withGlomus mosseae on parameters of N2 fixation and plant growth was studied in pot experiments with pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) infected withRhizobium leguminosarum and supplied with varied levels of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N). Reduced light intensities were used to evaluate the dependence of the microsymbionts on assimilate supply. In plants grown with low P supply, mycorrhization increased the concentration of P in shoots, and thus N2 fixation. Reduced light intensity significantly depressed mycorrhizal colonization and nodule growth in low-P plants. When P supply did not limit plant growth and N2 fixation, however, the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization was reduced due to the higher P status, and the microsymbionts were not impaired by low light intensities. To maximize carbohydrate supply, another experiment was carried out at high light intensity of 900 mol m–2s–1 and with non-limiting P supply. Nitrogen fertilization, given as starter N, enhanced plant growth, but delayed nodule formation. Towards flowering, nodulation rapidly increased, but less so inGlomus inoculated plants. After 28 days mycorrhizal plants were lower in shoot dry weight, nodule dry weight and nitrogenase activity. The results suggest that under many, but not all, environmental conditions the host plant is able to restrict mycorrhizal colonization and, thus, to prevent impairment ofRhizobium symbiosis.deceased in May 1994  相似文献

Summary Young birds on their first migration possess innate information on the direction of their migration route. It is present in two forms, using celestial rotation and the geomagnetic field as references. These two systems, together with information provided by factors associated with sunset, interact in a complex way to establish the migratory direction. During ontogeny, celestial rotation appears to be dominant; during migration, however, celestial cues appear to be controlled by the magnetic field. The factors associated with sunset — the view of the setting sun, the characteristic pattern of polarized light — are important secondary cues which seem to derive their directional significance from the magnetic field. Their role appears to be more variable, with possible species-specific differences. During spring migration and later autumn migrations, flying in the migratory direction is complemented by navigational processes which enable the birds to return to a specific home site known from previous stays.  相似文献

Vitamin B12 (VB12) is a putative modulator of the human circadian clock, improving entrainability to the 24 h light-dark cycle. The present study was intended to elucidate the mechanism of VB12 action in an animal model. In male rats free-running under constant dim illumination, a single light pulse of 50–1000 lux for 20 min given at circadian time (CT) 20 induced a 0.28 to 1.08 h phase advance and at CT 14 induced a 0.54 to 2.10 h phase delay. A 3 h intracerebroventricular (icv) infusion of 30 nmol VB12 starting 2 h prior to a 20 min 200 lux light pulse significantly amplified phase shifts in comparison with saline-treated or untreated controls. The mean phase advance (1.13 h) was 1.8-fold greater than that of saline-infused controls, whereas the mean phase delay (2.28 h) was 2.9-fold greater. These values were comparable to the maximal phase shifts caused by 1000 lux light pulses in untreated rats. Since the same VB12 treatment alone had failed to induce a phase shift in a previous experiment, these results indicate that VB12 strongly enhanced light pulse-induced phase shifts and thus augmented the entrainability of the circadian clock to light.  相似文献

Tsetse flies are positively phototactic below about 30 degree C and negatively phototactic above it. The flies show a preference for the wet end of a humidity gradient and the bright end of a dorsal light intensity gradient. Studies of activity levels indicate that tsetse flies should aggregate in damp situations where the activity levels is minimal, whereas in practice the flies are distributed throughout the whole of gradient. Analyses of the water and fat content of experimental flies indicates that the reactions of individual flies is determined by their physiological condition and the conditions under which the flies have previously been kept. Summary There was no significant difference in the level of 2,3-DPG in the red blood cells of sheep of different haemoglobin types (Hb A and Hb B) or potassium types (HK and LK). However, low glutathione (GSHL) sheep had significantly higher (p<0.01) level of 2,3-DPG in their red blood cells than high glutathione (GSHH) sheep. There was also significant effect of interactions between glutathione, haemoglobin and potassium types (p<0.05) and glutathione and haemoglobin types (p<0.01) on red cell 2,3-DPG levels.  相似文献

Summary The naturally occurring lignan, monoepoxylignanolide (MEL) fromAegilops ovata L., inhibits germination of lettuce achenes (seeds) in incandescent light but not in the dark. The action spectrum after preincubation of MEL in darkness shows inhibition in the regions of 399 nm and 712–804 nm, but after pretreatment with incandescent light inhibition is seen at 500–577 nm and 712–804 nm. The infrared inhibition by MEL is not reversible by red light. The pretreatment of MEL with incandescent light gives rise to a photoproduct which, together with MEL itself, inhibits the germination of lettuce achenes in the dark.  相似文献

Immunoglobulin light chains are the precursor proteins for fibrils that are formed during primary amyloidosis and in amyloidosis associated with multiple myeloma. As found for the approximately 20 currently described forms of focal, localized, or systemic amyloidoses, light chain-related fibrils extracted from physiological deposits are invariably associated with glycosaminoglycans, predominantly heparan sulfate. Other amyloid-related proteins are either structurally normal, such as beta2-microglobulin and islet amyloid polypeptide, fragments of normal proteins such as serum amyloid A protein or the precursor protein of the beta peptide involved in Alzheimer's disease, or are inherited forms of single amino acid variants of a normal protein such as found in the familial forms of amyloid associated with transthyretin. In contrast, the primary structures of light chains involved in fibril formation exhibit extensive mutational diversity rendering some proteins highly amyloidogenic and others non-pathological. The interactions between light chains and glycosaminoglycans are also affected by amino acid variation and may influence the clinical course of disease by enhancing fibril stability and contributing to resistance to protease degradation. Relatively little is currently known about the mechanisms by which glycosaminoglycans interact with light chains and light-chain fibrils. It is probable that future studies of this uniquely diverse family of proteins will continue to shed light on the processes of amyloidosis, and contribute as well to a greater understanding of the normal physiological roles of glycosaminoglycans.  相似文献

Summary The effects of exposure to sudden transitions from dark to light (D/L) and light to dark (L/D) were determined on the free running circadian feding rhythm of European stalings (Sturnus vulgaris). D/L transitions (step-up) produced phase advances throughout the circadian cycle. In contrast L/D transitions (step-down) produced both advances and delays. The L/D transition phase-response curve has a contour and shape similar to the phase-response curves previously obtained in birds with light pulses.  相似文献

Summary Specific activities of NADP isocitrate dehydrogenase and acetylcholinesterase were significantly higher in muscle fibres differentiated, in vitro, from myoblasts of adductor magnus (red) than pectoralis major (white) muscles 10-day-old chick embryos. Summary The levels of Ca++ and calcium binding properties of sarcoplasmic proteins in red and white muscles of cat fish were compared.
