1 IntroductionForeign language teaching generally refers to the theory and practice of teaching a foreign language.It has close connection with linguistics,psychology,education,philosophy,sociology and other disciplines.Since linguistics and foreign language teaching both study language phenomena on the aspects of theory and practice,the two are much closely related to each other.Linguistics is beneficial to language teaching in two aspects: Firstly,applied linguistics extends theoretical linguistics in the direction of language learning and teaching,so that the teacher is enabled to make better decisions on the goal and content of the teaching.Secondly,applied linguistics states the insights and implications that linguistic theories have on the language teaching methodology.Once the goal and content of the teaching are settled,the teacher has to consider questions of how to teach.As an English teacher it really enriches my mind on what to teach and how to teach more effectively.This paper will focus on Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis and its implications on second language teaching.  相似文献

Euphemism,as a linguistic form generated to seek ideal and effective communication, is widely and vividly used in people's daily life, and has become an indispensable part in English language. So it has intrigued linguists and scholars for long time. The researches about this subject cover many different fields, including linguistics, pragmatics, and psychology and so on. However, the researches on its pragmatic application in teachers' language are few. Based on the previous scholars' achievements, its application on teacher's language from the perspective of pragmatic function would be explored in this paper. Nowadays, student-centered teaching is advocated to improve teaching. Applying euphemisms on teaching is a typical embodiment. Teacher's applying euphemisms can shake offthe fright of students in pubhc, protect their self-esteem and stimulate their interest in study. When it is applied to teaching languages appropriately, relaxing and lively atmosphere built in class, students' confidence elevated, their initiative enhanced, good teaching results can be attained.  相似文献

Nowadays, educators from home and abroad believe that learning a foreign language means learning a great deal of the foreign civilization and culture. And the utmost goal of language teaching is to cultivate EFL learners’communicative competence, but not merely the linguistic knowledge. Thus, teaching a foreign language is more than teaching new words, expressions and grammar rules, but should also incorporate the target culture elements into language knowledge. In order to improve EFL learners’English proficiency, teachers must make efforts to cultivate EFL learners’intercultural competence and promote their sensibility and adaptability to the differences between Chinese culture and the Western culture. Only by doing so, can EFL learners communicate with native speakers appropriately and smoothly. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the role of grammar in English language teaching. Grammar teaching has become a preoccupation among more and more language researchers and teachers. This paper sets out to compare the views of grammar teaching in the Grammar-Translation, Audio-Lingual and Communicative Approaches from the following five points, the status of grammar teaching, the different methods in the instruction of grammar, the teacher’s role in grammar teaching, the characteristics of typical teaching activities in the three approaches with detailed examples and the effect of the three approaches to grammar teaching.It is concluded that grammar teaching should subscribe to an eclectic approach, that is, to take advantage of the strong points of each approach and avoid their weak points. Moreover, grammar teaching should be conducted according to the variables of learners and teaching circumstances.  相似文献

Motivation to language learning is a complex set of variables including effort, desire to achieve goals, as well as attitudes toward the learning of the language. Individuals' motivation to second-language learning also includes their motivation orientations, interest in the second language, attitudes toward the second-language group, attitudes toward the second-language learning situations and second-language anxiety. Based on the basic theories and approaches, teaching activities are part of motivation in English classes. The teacher of language should have a good influence on students and develop students' keen interest in study in order to strengthen their intrinsic motivation, and set up some new goals for students to pursue and give the feedback to reinforce their inner drive and confidence. The Interaction Hypothesis, which was first advanced by Michael Long, is considered as a further supplement or extension of the Input Hypothesis in the field of second language acquisition. This paper explains the main claims of Michael Long's Interaction Hypothesis, the three steps to study how input and interaction affect the acquisition of a second language, and the importance of the interactional modifications applied by both participants of the interaction. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation of the theory as well as its relation to second language teaching, with many researchers' findings and arguments discussed as supporting evidence.
