Summary Feeding with a galactose-rich diet induced a substantial drop in blood plasma 1,5-anhydroglucitol concentration. The decline was proportional to the dose of galactose. The decline was less marked in xylose-fed rats.

Effect and fate of intravenously administered porphobilin in rats

Summary It rats after i.v. prophobilin, blood pressure and pulse rate remained stable, the animals were calm and moved freely with no symptoms or signs of nervous effect. Prophobilin was rapidly excreted in the urine.     

The effects of intracerebrally administered RNA,tubercidin and histones on learning in rats

Zusammenfassung RNA aus Hefe, RNA-Hydrolysat, Tubercidin und mit Lysin angereichertes Histon, i.c. oder i.p. injiziert, hatten keine Wirkung auf die Lernfähigkeit von Ratten. Intracerebral injiziertes¹⁴C-RNA verbreitete sich schnell über das ganze Gehirn und verschwand relativ schnell wieder. Nach i.p. Injection von¹⁴C-RNA konnte jedoch ein geringer Betrag von¹⁴C im cerebralen RNA gefunden werden.     

Timidity and metabolic elimination patterns in audiogenic-seizure susceptible and resistant female rats

Résumé Les résultats ont démontré un certain rapport entre la timidité et la tendance aux crises convulsives audiogènes chez les rates. L'augmentation de la quantité des urines et des matières fécales fut aussi notée dans les groupes d'animaux sensibles. L'augmentation du poids des matières fécales en fonction du gramme d'aliments ingérés suggère un trouble et une déficience des fonctions digestives et du métabolisme alimentaire chez les animaux à tendances convulsives.

Sodium deoxycholate promotes the absorption of heparin administered orally, probably by acting on gastrointestinal mucosa, in rats

Sodium deoxycholate (DOC), selected as a promoter of gastrointestinal absorption of heparin, was administered orally to rats, followed, at increasing intervals, by heparin. Maximal plasma clearing activity (PC) was obtained with a 60-min interval, though PC was still elicited after 24 h, suggesting that DOC acts on the gastrointestinal mucosa. Inhibition of blood coagulation was also observed after oral heparin. The suggestion that DOC increases heparin absorption is supported by increased plasma levels of heparin. No signs of several gastrointestinal damage were seen.

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Prostaglandin in Aerosolform bei mehreren Arten als Bronchodilator wirkt. Die Wirksamkeit, natÜrliches Vorkommen und schnelle Metabolisierung der Prostaglandine sprechen fÜr eine therapeutische Verwendung als bronchodilatierende Aerosole.

The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-diphosphate carboxylase fromNicotiana tabacum

Summary The N-terminal sequence of the small subunit of Fraction I protein isolated from tobacco was investigated, using an automatic protein sequencer. The amino acid sequence of the first 21 residues is presented.     

The susceptibility to exercise-induced muscle damage increases as rats grow larger

Summary Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and N-acetyl--glucosaminidase activities were both elevated after eccentric exercise indicating that this type of exercise causes muscle damage. Muscle damage as measured by glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in the vastus intermedius was greater and occurred later in larger rats indicating that the susceptibility to muscle damage is increased and the repair process delayed in older and larger animals.
