Summary A comparison was made between adaptive and signal sensitivity profiles of the surround response mechanism of cat retinal ganglion cells. The 2 profiles were found to be similar for X cells but the surrounds of Y cells appear to pool adaptation over a smaller retinal region than they pool signals. Acknowledgments. Zusammenfassung Einzelne Zellen in der Region des superior colliculus des BeuteltieresDidelphis virginiana können von der linken oder auch rechten Retina stimuliert werden. Diese Zellen verfügen über eine gut entwickelte intermodale Reaktionsfähigkeit, Selektivität gegenüber gerichteter Bewegung und rasche Gewohnheitsbildung. Zellpopulationen derselben Region repräsentieren eine grosse Anzahl von «receptive field»-Geometrien.

Extracellular cell recordings in the pigeon optic tectum show a selectivity of response to different sine-wave gratings presented in motion. The optimal frequencies are found to be between 0.4 and 0.9 cycle/degree and are independent of direction, orientation and velocity.  相似文献

Assembly and disassembly of adhesion structures such as focal adhesions (FAs) and podosomes regulate cell adhesion and differentiation. On antigen-presenting dendritic cells (DCs), acquisition of a migratory and immunostimulatory phenotype depends on podosome dissolution by prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)). Whereas the effects of physico-chemical and topographical cues have been extensively studied on FAs, little is known about how podosomes respond to these signals. Here, we show that, unlike for FAs, podosome formation is not controlled by substrate physico-chemical properties. We demonstrate that cell adhesion is the only prerequisite for podosome formation and that substrate availability dictates podosome density. Interestingly, we show that DCs sense 3-dimensional (3-D) geometry by aligning podosomes along the edges of 3-D micropatterned surfaces. Finally, whereas on a 2-dimensional (2-D) surface PGE(2) causes a rapid increase in activated RhoA levels leading to fast podosome dissolution, 3-D geometric cues prevent PGE(2)-mediated RhoA activation resulting in impaired podosome dissolution even after prolonged stimulation. Our findings indicate that 2-D and 3-D geometric cues control the spatial organization of podosomes. More importantly, our studies demonstrate the importance of substrate dimensionality in regulating podosome dissolution and suggest that substrate dimensionality plays an important role in controlling DC activation, a key process in initiating immune responses.  相似文献

A possible GABAergic innervation of the nucleus raphe dorsalis (NRD) was investigated by measuring glutamate decarboxylase activity in the NRD after lesioning the afferents of this nucleus. The slight decrease found in the enzymatic activity suggests that these afferents have a minor participation in the GABA innervation of the NRD and implies the existence of an intrinsic GABAergic system in this nucleus. This local innervation was demonstrated by radio-autography and shows fibers, axonal varicosities and cell bodies which accumulate 3H GABA in the caudal part of this nucleus.  相似文献

Summary The GABA-mimetic activities of 4 analogues muscimol, isonipecotic acid, isoguvacine and N-methyl isoguvacine have been examined at the GABA receptor in the rat isolated superior cervical ganglion. The depolarizing action of all 4 analogues could be selectively antagonized by bicuculline methochloride and isopropyl bicyclophosphate. Muscimol was the only analogue more potent than GABA (molar potency ratio=5.08±0.707). The potency of isoguvacine was 0.23±0.026 and isonipecotic acid 0.011±0.0028. The mechanism by which static and low-frequency magnetic fields are transduced into biological signals responsible for reported effects on brain electrical activity is not yet ascertained. To test the hypothesis that fields can cause a subthreshold change in the resting membrane potential of excitable cells, we measured changes in transmembrane current under voltage clamp produced in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, using the patch-clamp method in the whole-cell configuration. In separate experiments, cells were exposed to static fields of 1, 5, and 75 G, to time-varying fields of 1 and 5 G, and to combined static and time-varying fields tuned for resonance of Na+, K+, Ca2+, or H+. To increase sensitivity, measurements were made on cells connected by gap junctions. For each cell, the effect of the field was evaluated on the basis of 100 trials consisting of a 5-s exposure immediately followed by a 5-s control period. In each experiment, the field had no discernible effect on the transmembrane current in the vicinity of zero current (- 50 mV voltage clamp). The sensitivity of the measuring system was such that we would have detected a current corresponding to a change in membrane potential as small as 38 microV. Consequently, if sensitivity of mammalian cells to magnetic fields is mediated by subthreshold changes in membrane potential, as in sensory transduction of sound, light, and other stimuli, then the ion channels responsible for the putative changes are probably present only in specialized sensory neurons or neuroepithelial cells. A change in transmembrane potential in response to magnetic fields is not a general property of excitable cells in culture.  相似文献

Summary Maintained firing rates of X cells and Y cells were compared at 6 adaptation levels (AL) between –2.71 log cd/m2 and 2.28 log cd/m2 (10 mm2 pupil size). X cell maintained firing was higher at all ALs and was statistically different at medium and high ones. Changes in AL had nearly identical effects upon X and Y cell suprathreshold sensitivity to a flashing spot in the center of their receptive fields; the Weber function had a slope of 0.744 for Y cells and 0.743 for X cells.
