Summary Fine divided HF-etched quartz was dissolved in a 0.2M solution of pyrocatechol at pH 9.6. Between 17 and 40 °C the dissolution rate (v _s ) follows the equation: logv _s =0.0295 T-20.87 At 25 °Cv _s amounts to 0.8 · 10^–12 g cm^–2 sec^–1. With several phenols the dissolution rate of quartz decreases in the order: pyrocatechol > pyrogallol > 2, 3-dihydroxynaphthalene.     

The effects of temperature on ATPase activity and force generation in skinned muscle fibers from the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans)

Summary ATPase activity and force generation have been measured simultaneously in isolated, demembranated muscle fibers of the Pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) between 0 and 30°C. Tension generation is relatively independent of temperature above 15°C and falls with a Q₁₀ of <1.5 on decreasing the temperature to 0°C. In contrast, the Q₁₀ for ATPase activity is 2.2 over the range 0–30°C. The results are interpreted in terms of the cross bridge theory of contraction.     

Ventilatory responses to CO2 at different body temperatures in the snake,Coluber constrictor

Summary Ventilatory responses to CO₂ were examined at different temperatures in the snake,Coluber constrictor. CO₂ sensitivity increased between 15 and 25°C but not between 25 and 35°C. A rapidly occurring off-CO₂ transient hyperpnea suggested the presence of an intrapulmonary chemoreceptor.     

α- andβ-Guttiferins

Zusammenfassung Die Isolierung, Charakterisierung und antibiotischen Eigenschaften von-Guttiferin (I), C₃₃H₃₈O₈ (Smp. 113–115°), aus den Samenhülsen und vom nahe verwandten-Guttiferin (II), C₂₉H₃₆O₆ oder C_33–34H_38–40O₈ (Smp. 86–91°) (möglicherweise identisch mit-Gambogasäure), aus Gummigutt, dem harzigen Sekret vonGarcinia morella, wurden beschrieben und ihre Verwandtschaft zu Morellin und Moreollin, den beiden bekannten Pigmenten der Samenhülsen, dargelegt. Für I wurde eine Partialstruktur vorgeschlagen. Die Bildung derselben komplexen bromhaltigen Säure vom Smp. 199 bis 200° unter der Einwirkung von Natriumhypobromit auf I und II spricht ferner für deren nahe strukturelle Verwandtschaft.     

Cocsulin: a new bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid fromCocculus pendulus Diels

Zusammenfassung Ein neuesbisbenzylisochinolines Alkaloid vom Typ des Trilobins wird Cocsulin genannt, (C₃₅H₃₄N₂O₅), Schmp. 272–274°, []d+280°, und ist aus Blättern und Stamm vonCocculus pendulus Diels isoliert und als Struktur V angegeben worden.

Effets de la température d'élevage sur la croissance et l'équilibre hormonal deSchistocerca gregaria au cours des deux derniers stades larvaires

Summary A fall in diurnal rearing temperature (from 33°C to 28°C) during the 2 last larval instars ofSchistocerca gregaria induces a lengthening of development and a slowing down of growth. At 28°C, circulating levels of juvenile hormones, particularly those of JH₃, diminish from the middle of the 4th instar but ecdysteroids and proteins accumulate in haemolymph.     

The effect of temperature on the respiratory function of coelacanth blood

Zusammenfassung Die Sauerstoffdissoziationskurve vomLatimeria-Blut zeigt eine grössere Affinität zu Sauerstoff bei 15°C (P₅₀=2–3 mm) als bei 28°C (P₅₀=18.0 mm). Diese Unterschiede und die geringe Sauerstoffkapazität sind für eine Diskussion über das Überleben des Fisches beim Aufsteigen aus grosser Tiefe an die Gewässeroberfläche massgebend.

Summary Coccuvine C₁₇H₁₉NO₂, m.p. 137–38°, a new alkaloid fromCocculus laurifolius DC has been assigned the structure and stereochemistry as (I) on the basis of spectroscopic studies and chemical correlation.     

Elaboration of vitamin B12 byEscherichia coli

Résumé Les auteurs ont constaté l'absence de la vitamine B₁₂ dans le corps 1° deE. coli 113-3, 2° de son parent prototrophique et 3° dans la souche sauvage. Le titre de B₁₂ dans le milieu de culture s'est trouvé fortement augmenté par la méthionine, dans le cas de la souche sauvage uniquement. En ajoutant de la cyanocobalamine on a obtenu dans les trois cas une augmentation de désoxyribosides.

Serpine—a new isomeride of yohimbine isolated fromRauwolfia serpentina benth

Zusammenfassung AusRauwolfia serpentina Benth. wurde das neue Alkaloid Serpin, C₂₁H₂₆O₃N₂, Smp. 213–14°, isoliert. Es ist mit Yohimbin isomer. Das Alkaloid enthält eine-OH- und eine -COOCH₃-Gruppe. Das I.R.-Spektrum des Serpins zeigt die typische -COOMe-Bande (5,80µ). Eine Iminogruppierung -NH wird durch die intensive 2,95-µ-Bande verursacht. Bei der Bande bei 2,75µ handelt es sich um eine Hydroxyl-Gruppierung. Nach seinem UV.-Spektrum und IR.-Spektrum handelt es sich um ein Indolalkaloid. Durch Dehydrierung des Serpins mit Selenstaub wurdeYobyrin, das sogenannte «Tetrabyrin» undKetoyobyrin gebildet. Aus diesen Spaltstükken ergab sich die Konstitutionsformel des Serpins.     

Arctigenin-4′-β-gentiobioside fromTrachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium

Zusammenfassung Eine neue Lignansubstanz, Arctigenin-4--gentiobiosid C₃₃H₄₄O₁₆·H₂O wurde als weisses Pulver von Smp. 174–176° aus Stengeln vonTrachelospermum asiaticum Nakai var.intermedium Nakai gewonnen.     

Experimenteller Nachweis der autochthonen Automatie der Lymphgefässe

Summary It is shown that the peristaltic activity of the isolated mesenterial-lymph vessels of mammals (Cavia porcellus L.) is provoked by two different stimuli:1. by extension (internal pressure of the vessel: 2–25 cm H₂O); 2. by temperature (biokinetic Temperature-Space of 23°; between 22–45°C).Based on these experiments, the autochthonous automaticy of the lymph vessels has been proved.

Effects of photoperiod,temperature and testosterone-treatment on plasma T3 and T4 levels in the Djungarian hamster,Phodopus sungorus

Summary The effects of photoperiod, temperature and testosterone treatment on plasma T₃ and T₄ levels were investigated in the Djungarian hamster. Plasma T₃ level was affected by temperature (25°C<7°C) but not by photoperiod. Plasma T₄ level was affected by photoperiod (short day < long day) at 25°C. Administration of testosterone increased plasma T₄ level under short photoperiod at 25°C. Thus, higher plasma T₄ level under long photoperiod at 25°C might be induced by testosterone.

Polarographic determination of the reaction rate of the second step in an SN1 displacement

Zusammenfassung Die Zeitabhängigkeit des polarographischen Stromes, welche man bei der gemäss SN1 verlaufenden Hydrolyse vonp-Methoxy-2-phenylpropylchlorid beobachtet, ermöglicht die Bestimmung der Geschwindigkeitskonstantenk ₁ der Gesamtreaktion sowie auch der Geschwindigkeitskonstantenk ₂ des zweiten raschen Schrittes, welcher nach pseudo-erster Ordnung verläuft. Fürk ₂ ergibt sich in Aceton, das 5% Wasser enthält, bei 25°Ck ₂=2,0×10³ sec^–1.

Summary Mycoside C_m, m.p. 198–200° []_D = – 31° (CHCl₃), a new peptido-glycolipid isolated fromMycobacterium marianum, has the approximate molecular formula C₁₀₈H₁₈₅N₇O₂₈ and gives on hydrolysis seven molecules ofd-amino acids (oned-phenylalanine, threed-allo-threonine, threed-alanine), three molecules of 6-deoxyhexoses (one 6-deoxy-talose of as yet undetermined configuration and two molecules of 3,4-di-O-methyl-l-rhamnose); the lipid moiety of mycoside C_m is a hydroxy-acid of approximate formula C₅₀H₉₆O₃; three O-acetyl groups are also present. The preliminary formula (I) is proposed for mycoside C_m.

Demethylcephaeline,a new alkaloid fromAlangium lamarckii. Characterization of AL 60, the hypotensive principle from the stem-bark

Résumé A partir de l'écorce de la tige d'Alangiumlamarckii Thw., une base, C₂₇H₃₆N₂O₄ (p.f. 147–149°, []_d-53,5°) ainsi que de la céphaeline, psychotrine, desméthylpsychotrine et tubulosine ont été isolées. Cette nouvelle base est identifiée comme déméthylcéphaeline, montrant que le principe hypotendu AL 60, précédemment obtenu de la même provenance est un mélange de psychotrine, de céphaeline et de déméthylcéphaeline.     

A contribution on the effect of noradrenaline on heat production in mice

Zusammenfassung Bei ausgewachsenen Mäusen wurde nach i.p. Noradrenalininjektion die Steigerung der O₂-Aufnahme über den Grundumsatz in der Thermoneutralzone verfolgt. Nach einer Dosis von 1,6 mg/kg wurde ein bedeutender Unterschied (p < 0,05) der O₂-Aufnahmesteigerung zwischen der Gruppe normaler (155%) und normaler, auf 17°C adaptierter Mäuse (165%) und der Gruppe haarloser Mäuse (195%) festgestellt.
