Inhibition of growth and lactic acid synthesis inLactobacillus casei by maltol and its reversal by glutamic acid

Summary Maltol inhibited growth and lactic acid synthesis byLactobacillus casei. The inhibition was partially overcome by the addition of casein hydrolysate and yeast extract. Some amino acid mixtures were also effective, among which glutamic acid was able to reverse the inhibition completely.     

On the chemical nature of acerin and the virucidal and antiviral effects of some vegetable tannins

Zusammenfassung Die viruzide Wirkung von Extrakten aus Ahornsamen auf Coli-Bakteriophagen ist durch Tannine bedingt. Verschiedene Gerbstoffe zeigen einen zum Teil sehr starken virushemmenden Effekt, wobei nur das extrazelluläre Virus angegriffen wird. Wahrscheinlich handelt es sich um eine Gerbwirkung auf das Protein des Virus.Die pflanzlichen Gerbstoffe tragen vermutlich dazu bei, die Pflanzensäfte virusfrei zu halten.

While this paper in print, our attention was called to a recent publication in J. Bact. (66, 572 1953) byCarson andFrisch about the growth inhibiting action of tannic acid on influenza virusin ovo. We were ignorant of this work and of the previous publication from 1948 byGreen, Proc. Soc. Exptl. Biol. Med.67, 483 (1948).     

Agglutininbildung durch verschiedene Proteinfraktionen vonSalmonella ballerup

Summary The author has examined the agglutinogenic property of nucleoprotein and its components, the nucleic acid and proteins fromS. ballerup. The nucleoprotein was obtained by the extraction of fresh bacteria desintegrated by means of glass powder at pH 8.4 and precipitated with acetic acid at pH 4.6, and its components by splitting the nucleoprotein with 0.5% sodium carbonate at pH 5.5. The protein component was separated from the nucleic acid by forming a chloroform-proteingel. The protein component was submitted to a further purification by dissolving at pH 7 and precipitating at pH 5.5. Rabbits to whom 4–8 mg of the substance were given in 10–12 doses were used for the immunization. The agglutinins were determined byHeidelberger andKabat's quantitative method with aS. ballerup suspension. The maximum quantity of agglutinin is shown in mg nitrogen per 1 cm³ of serum. In comparison with the results obtained by the immunization with whole germs, it follows that, by means of nitrogen compounds, the nucleoprotein has the most substantial agglutinogenic effect, and the nucleic acid the poorest one.

Summary In a strain ofAspergillus niger grown in Bernhauer medium, oxalacetic decarboxylase activity increased, while citric acid accumulated in the medium. The mechanism of citric acid accumulation is discussed.

Summary Emericid is a new polyether polycyclic ionophore antibiotic excreted byStreptomyces hygroscopicus (DS 24 367). Active in vitro against Gram-positive bacteria, it is ineffective in vivo. At a 0.006–0.02% level in the diet it protects chickens and rabbits against coccidiosis.From a recent paper byN. Otake (Tetrahedron Lett.1970, 4147) emericid and lonomycin would be identical.

Summary Oxalic acid is only dissimilated if other carbon sources are present (e.g. citric acid, succinic acid), whereas malonic acid is also dissimilated as a single component byA. niger. It is supposed that the latter is used by the mould not only energetically but also for building up cell substance.
