Summary Several of 17 carbohydrates stimulated ingestion by black beetle larvae (Heteronychus arator) and of these maltose induced an exceptionally strong response. Only maltose, glucose, fructose and sucrose stimulated feeding by adult beetles.  相似文献

The dorsal vessel of the blood feeding insect,Rhodnius prolixus, was found to increase or decrease its rate of contraction in response to a number of different stimuli. Handling increased contraction rates whereas tactile stimulation of the ventral abdominal cuticle inhibited contraction. Injection of very low concentrations of serotonin or of high concentrations of octopamine enhanced the inhibitory effect, apparently by acting via the nervous system. Higher concentrations of serotonin increased heart rate by acting directly on the myocardium. The inhibitory response is suggested to be one facet of a generalised thigmotactic response.  相似文献

There was a significant increase in immunoreactive insulin (IRI) following lateral hypothalamus (LHA) stimulation. An opposite response was obtained from ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH). We experimentally tested a model predicting that colony-level genotypic diversity contributes to colonylevel foraging flexibility in honey bees. We established a colony into which we placed individually marked workers from three genetically distinct groups. The colony was placed in an enclosure that contained feeding stations with pollen and sugar syrup. Foraging resources, stores of pollen and the quantity of brood within the colony were varied temporally. Individual foragers switched between resource types in response to changes in relative resource quality and colony need, demonstrating flexibility in resource choice at the individual level. However, genetic groups within the colony varied in their tendency to collect pollen versus nectar, and in lability of response to changes in foraging stimuli. Our data suggest that within-colony genotypic diversity contributes to a resilient foraging response to environmental variation.  相似文献

Total and ouabain-sensitive ATPase activities were determined in the salivary glands of ticks throughout the feeding cycle. Activities were very low in unfed specimens. In the glands of feeding females, the activities rose until a maximum was reached for both ATPase components at approximately 200 mg. The activities remain low in males throughout the feeding period. These findings are discussed in relation to the fluid secretory process of the salivary glands.  相似文献

The defensive anal effluent discharged by Silpha americana in response to disturbance contains a mixture of steroids stemming from a glandular annex of the rectum. The compounds have been characterized as 15 beta-hydroxyprogesterone (1, principal component), 5 beta-pregnan-15 beta-ol-3,20-dione (2), 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 15 beta-diol-20-one (3), 5 beta-pregnan-7 beta, 15 beta-diol-3,20-dione (4), 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 7 beta, 15 beta-triol-20-one (5), 5 beta-pregnan-16 alpha-ol-3,20-dione (6), and 5 beta-pregnan-3 alpha, 16 alpha-diol-20-one (7), none previously found in insects. Bioassays with jumping spiders showed compounds 1 and 6 to be feeding deterrents at the 1 microgram level.  相似文献

For each rat, food approach behaviour was constant over a long period of time. This allows conversion of approach behaviour data into quantified feeding behaviour. The effect on energy metabolism of delayed absorption of starch by inhibition of -amylase was examined by considering levels of plasma glucose and 3-hydroxybutyric acid (3-OHBA) in rats. Addition of -amylase inhibitor (AI) to a high starch diet delayed the plasma glucose response after feeding: peak plasma glucose levels in the control group occurred 15 min after feeding, whereas in the AI group this peak did not occur until 30 min after. The total plasma glucose response was not different between the two groups. Plasma 3-OHBA levels 1 day after food restriction increased approximately five-fold in both groups. After 3 days of food restriction, the AI group maintained the same level of plasma 3-OHBA as after 1 day of food restriction, while the control group showed significantly decreased levels of 3-OHBA. After 3 days of food restriction, plasma insulin levels were significantly decreased in the AI group compared with the corresponding levels of the control group and with levels before the restriction. There was no significant difference in body weight between the two groups. These findings suggest that delayed hyperglycemia due to delayed absorption of starch following AI loading may attenuate insulin secretion, leading to altered metabolism of 3-OHBA during the delayed response to energy deficit.  相似文献

Histamine antagonists were infused into the third ventricle of the cerebrum in rats. All the H1-, but none of the H2-antagonists tested, induced initial feeding during the early portion of the light phase when histamine level was highest. No periprandial drinking was observed. Ambulation increased during feeding. The effect on feeding was attenuated when brain histamine was normally low during the early portion of the dark phase, or was decreased by alpha-fluoromethylhistidine. Hypothalamic neuronal histamine may suppress food intake through H1-receptors, and diurnal fluctuations of food intake may mirror neuronal histamine levels.  相似文献

Medaka were maintained on a 16:8 light-dark cycle and fed once daily on one of 5 different feeding schedules. The daily rhythm of agonistic behavior rapidly entrained to the scheduled feeding time and maintained this entrainment during a 3-day starvation period. In contrast the daily rhythms of egg laying and courtship stayed entrained to the L:D cycle regardless of the feeding schedule. Thus, temporal integration of this fish with its daily environment can involve multistimuli which concurrently and differentially entrain externally expressed circadian systems.  相似文献

Summary Duration of the feeding stage and corresponding weight increase during the last larval instar of the codling moth,Laspeyresia pomonella, are controlled by JH. Larvae reared under short day conditions have a relatively high titer of JH during the last larval instar and enter diapause as mature larvae. They feed longer and become heavier than larvae reared under long day conditions, which have no JH during the last larval instar and pupate when mature. By application of the JH mimetic Altosid® during the first 2 or 3 days of the last larval instar, the duration of feeding activity of larvae reared under respectively long and short day conditions was prolongated and the larvae became significantly heavier. The feeding behaviour could only be influenced by the juvenoid as long as the feeding activity of the larvae had not yet ceased.  相似文献

We have developed an oral feeding model for Aeromonas hydrophila enteritis using Rattus norvegicus with clindamycin pretreatment. All animals in the clindamycin group developed a self-limited, loose stool by day four of feeding. Intestinal examination revealed evidence of enteritis. Moreover, antibiotic usage may be a predisposing risk factor to infection.  相似文献

Summary Oncopeltus fasciatus adults were treated with the antiallatotropin, precocene II and the circadian rhythms of feeding and mating behavior were monitored at 2-h intervals from lights on to lights off under 2 photoperiod regimes. Females ovariectomized as 5th instars were monitored for feeding and mating behavior at 2–3-h intervals from lights on to lights off as well. Neither precocene treatment nor ovariectomy was found to affect the mating or feeding behavioral rhythms under any photoperiod regime.Acknowledgment. Summary Larval density of Culex fatigans essentially influences the predatory rate of the mosquito-fish Gambusia affinis. The feeding rate of the fish gradually increases up to a maximum value at intermediate prey densities beyond which there is an asymptotic saturation in the feeding rate. The relationship is represented by an empirical equation which helps in the prediction of the ideal stocking rate of the fish in natural systems.  相似文献
