Comparison of counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE), latex agglutination (LA) and staphylococcal coagglutination (COAG) in pneumococcal antigen detection in vitro

Summary CIE was compared to agglutination assays employing commercial kits (Directigen, Phadebact), as well as our own LA and COAG reagents, in detection of pneumococcal capsular polysaccharide (PCP) antigens in vitro. Directigen provided the most sensitive assay. CIE was of comparable sensitivity except for PCP antigen types 7 and 14.     

Amantadine modulates phencyclidine binding site sensitivity in rat brain

Summary Amantadine, an antiviral drug with various CNS effects, significantly increases the affinity of the [³H] PCP receptor in rat brain. Rimantadine, an analogue of amantadine devoided of CNS effects, does not have any affect on the [³H] PCP receptor. These results may suggest that some of the CNS actions of amantadine are related to an interaction with the PCP receptor.Acknowledgments. We thank Dr W. K. Schmidt (E.I. Summary Phencyclidine (PCP), when given to mice, induces general hyperactivity and rapid circling, similar to that caused by morphine. Theory (In-)Equivalence and conventionalism in f(R) gravity

f(R) Gravity is the most natural extension of General Relativity within Riemannian Geometry. Due to (inter alia) its potential capacity for a unified treatment of early and late-time cosmic expansion, it has enjoyed recent attention in astrophysics and cosmology. I critically examine three inter-related claims found in the pertinent physics literature, of general interest to the philosopher of science. 1. f(R) Gravity is equivalent to a particular Brans-Dicke Theory. 2. The spacetime geometry underpinning f(R) Gravity has substantial conventional elements. 3. f(R) Gravity is an instance of a theory in which the distinction between matter and spacetime is conventional. Whilst the first claim can be vindicated in precise terms, the remaining two claims, I submit, are unwarranted – at least for the reasons usually adduced. On different grounds, though, the case for conventionalism about spacetime geometry in f(R) Gravity (as well as General Relativity) turns out to be considerably stronger.

Elastase digested urokinase (ED-UK)

Summary Elastase digested urokinase (ED-UK) was prepared from human high mol. wt urokinase (HMW-UK). It resembled low mol. wt urokinase (LMW-UK) in its mol. wt, specific activity, and active sites. The steady-state kinetic parameters of each enzyme for the activation of human Glu-plasminogen also resembled each other, as did their amidase parameters (with pyro-Glu-Gly-Arg-pNA).

Biodegradation of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) in the absence of oxygen

Summary A microbiol culture able to grow in the absence of oxygen with nitrilotriacetate (NTA) as the sole source of carbon and energy was enriched from river sediment. Growth was strictly dependent on the presence of nitrate and the results indicate that nitrate was exclusively used as the electron acceptor and was reduced to dinitrogen (N₂). The stoichiometry of anaerobic NTA degradation by the enrichment culture was determined.     

The identification of ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone) in 3 species of molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata)

Summary Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vectorBiomphalaria glabrata Say and inHelix aspersa Müller as well as inLymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper.We wish to thank Professor P. Karlson and Dr J. Bacterial utilization of cyclo(glycyl-L-prolyl)

Summary 3 strains of soil bacteria (2Achromobacter, 1Flavobacterium) were isolated by growth on cyclo(Gly-L-Pro) as carbon/nitrogen source. Good growth required yeast extract supplements. Utilization of cyclo(Gly-L-Pro) was inducible. Many efforts failed to obtain active cell-free preparations. Injected radioactive cyclo(Gly-L-Pro) was excreted intact by the albino rat; in contrast, injected radioactive H-Gly-L-Pro-OH was extensively metabolized.Supported by Grant GM-11105 from the National Institutes of Health.

Occurrence and biosynthesis of 11 (R)-hydroxy-eicosatetraenoic acid (11-R-HETE) in the Caribbean soft coralPlexaurella dichotoma

Gorgonian soft corals from the Caribbean Sea are known to contain prostaglandin-like compounds as well as other products of arachidonic acid lipoxygenation, and the formation of the latter has been suggested to represent the first step in prostaglandin biosynthesis. Here we present evidence for the presence of 11-R-hydroxy-5Z, 8Z, 12E, 14Z-eicosatetraenoic acid (11-R-HETE), as well as of the enzyme responsible for its biosynthesis, in the Caribbean gorgonianPlexaurella dichotoma. Lipid extracts fromP. dichotoma were purified by conventional SiO₂ column chromatography followed by reversed phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). These yielded a component having chromatographic and spectroscopic properties identical to synthetic 11-HETE. Electron impact mass spectrometric analysis of the acetoxy-, methyl ester derivative of the compound confirmed its identity as 11-HETE, while chiral phase HPLC of the methyl ester derivative showed that the stereochemistry of the alcoholic carbon atom wasR. Enzymatically active homogenates fromP. dichotoma were able to convert both unlabelled and [³H] arachidonic acid into 11-HETE. In vitro biosynthesis of the latter metabolite was also observed with homogenates of the Mediterranean gorgonianParamuricea clavata, another non-prostaglandin-containing soft coral, thus suggesting that 11-R-HETE production is not necessarily accompanied by prostaglandin formation in gorgonian corals.     

Hepatic silver binding protein (Ag BP) from sparrow (Passer domesticus)

A silver binding protein (Ag BP) has been identified in the liver of sparrows administered a tracer dose of 110mAg. The protein as purified by gel-filtration shows a major absorption maximum at 260 nm and a minor one at 225 nm. It has a mol.wt of 9500 daltons and is stable when exposed to high temperature (64 degrees C for 15 min) as well as to acidic pH (2.2).     

Locomotory energetics in a marsupial (Antechinomys spenceri) and a rodent (Notomys alexis)

Summary Steady state oxygen consumption was compared in a rodentNotomys alexis and a marsupialAntechinomys spenceri. The marsupial was found to diverge from predicted eutherian energetic patterns.N. alexis appears to use energy storage as a significant part of the step cycle before becoming bipedal. Serotonin metabolism in chronic alcoholism (author's transl)

Serotonin was determined in platelets of 47 patients with alcoholism during the state of withdrawal as well as in a group of healthy persons. The results show that serotonin values were significantly lower in the group of patients with alcoholism as compared with the control group of healthy persons.     

Activation with (±)N-n-propyl-nor-apomorphine (NPA) of the male rat copulatory behavior

Summary I.p. (±)N-n-propyl-nor-apomorphine HCl (NPA) influences copulatory behavior of vigorous adult male rats in the same ways as apomorphine, i.e., it reduces the latency to ejaculation as well as mount and intromission frequency. Furthermore, NPA administered to impotent male rats restores normal mating behavior in some of them.     

Increase in muscle fibres in the lateralis muscle (white portion) of Mugilidae (Pisces,Teleostei)

Summary A cycle of postlarval growth is described in the white portion of the lateralis muscle of Mugilidae. The cycle was identified histochemically by the myosin-ATPase reaction.This work was supported by a CNR grant (Oceanografia e fondi marini project).
