On the relationship between wool quality and the type and concentration of blood potassium in sheep

Résumé Dans le sang des moutons, la fréquence des gènes du type LK est en relation linéaire inversément proportionelle à l'épaisseur de la fibre de laine. Il en va de mÊme pour le degré de concentration du potassium. En se basant sur ces observations, les auteurs envisagent la possibilité d'améliorer la qualité de la laine ordinaire.     

Investigating the relationship between gold and silver prices

This paper analyses the long-run relationship between gold and silver prices. The three main questions addressed are: the influence of a large bubble from 1979:9 to 1980:3 on the cointegration relationship, the extent to which by including error-correction terms in a non-linear way we can beat the random walk model out-of-sample, and the existence of a strong simultaneous relationship between the rates of return of gold and silver. Different efficient single-equation estimation techniques are required for each of the three questions and this is explained within a simple bivariate cointegrating system. With monthly data from 1971 to 1990, it is found that cointegration could have occurred during some periods and especially during the bubble and post-bubble periods. However, dummy variables for the intercept of the long-run relationships are needed during the full sample. For the price of gold the non-linear models perform better than the random walk in-sample and out-of-sample. In-sample non-linear models for the price of silver perform better than the random walk but this predictive capacity is lost out-of-sample, mainly due to the structural change that occurs (reduction) in the variance of the out-of-sample models. The in-sample and out-of-sample predictive capacity of the non-linear models is reduced when the variables are in logs. Clear and strong evidence is found for a simultaneous relationship between the rates of return of gold and silver. In the three type of relationships that we have analysed between the prices of gold and silver, the dependence is less out-of-sample, possibly meaning that the two markets are becoming separated. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Antigenic relationship between the cysts and trophozoites ofEntamoeba invadens

Résumé La technique des anticorps fluorescents a été appliquée à l'étude de la relation antigénique des cystes et des trophozoïtes d'Entamoeba invadens. Le sérum anticyste préalablement absorbé par les trophozoïtes a montré chez ces derniers une fluorescence négligeable mais il continua a produire une fluorescence intense chez les cystes, ce qui indique que les antigènes de surface des cystes sont différents de ceux des trophozoïtes.     

Immunological blocking of exogenous and endogenous secretin in the dog

Summary In mongrel dogs with chronic gastric and duodenal fistula the biological activity of secretin on exocrine pancreatic secretion could be blocked by preincubating the secretin injected with rabbit antisecretin antibody. In addition, the activity of endogenous secretin released by acid was markedly reduced by application of antibody. Inverse relationship between melanogenesis and endogenous hydroquinone

Summary Inhibition or stimulation of melanogenesis have been found to occur as a result of the alteration of hydroquinone levels in the body. Substances which stimulate melanogenesis are found to lower the level of hydroquinone in amphibia, and evidence for the relationship is also given by mammalian experiments.Acknowledgments. Zusammenfassung Vier aufsteigende Rückenmarksbahnen werden bei spinalen Katzen durch somatische Afferenzen, die den Flexorreflex auslösen, beeinflusst. Genau wie beim Flexorreflex ist die Übertragung auf diese Bahnen bei dezerebrierten Katzen stark gehemmt. Die Regulierung der supraspinalen Hemmung der Bahnen und des Flexorreflexes scheint in gleicher Weise organisiert zu sein.     

Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural detection of the secretin cell in the pig intestinal mucosa

Riassunto Le cellule a secretina vengono identificate con l'immunofluorescenza nella mucosa duodenale e digiunale di maiale facendo uso di antisieri anti-secretina sintetica porcina. Parallele ricerche ultrastrutturali consentono di identificare in un tipo peculiare di cellular endocrina l'equivalente ultrastrutturale della cellular a secretina.

An empirical relationship between the prey density and predatory efficiency ofGambusia affinis

Summary Larval density of Culex fatigans essentially influences the predatory rate of the mosquito-fish Gambusia affinis. The feeding rate of the fish gradually increases up to a maximum value at intermediate prey densities beyond which there is an asymptotic saturation in the feeding rate. The relationship is represented by an empirical equation which helps in the prediction of the ideal stocking rate of the fish in natural systems.     

The relationship between the ring D-substituents and the absolute configuration for the aporphine alkaloids

Evidence of relationship between the dopaminergic neurotransmitters and the nuclei of the retinal cells

Summary Biochemical and quantitative autoradiographic methods indicated the accumulation of labelled dopamine inside the nuclei of retinal cells, and this decreased after treatment with 6 OH dopamine.     

An empirical relationship between intrinsic viscosity and frictional ratio
