The peritoneal fluid cytology of the adult female rhesus monkey

Synthesis of sulfated glycosaminoglycans by the three cell types of the rabbit cornea in culture

Summary Rabbit corneal cells were cultivated for 21 days and then exposed to Na₂ ³⁵SO₄, a precursor of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAG). All 3 cell types of the cornea, the fibroblasts, the epithelial as well as the endothelial cells, synthesize GAG. The fractionation-patterns of the epithelial and endothelial GAG are almost identical and differ clearly from the one of fibrolastic GAG.Supported by SNSF, grant No. 3.534.71.     

A short-term culture method for chromosome preparation from somatic tissues of adult mussel (Mytilus edulis)

In order to improve the efficiency of mussel chromosome preparation, a tissue culture procedure has been developed. Mantle and foot explants were grown in tubes in media composed of Eagle's Basal Medium supplemented either with salts or seawater, enriched with egg yolk, adjusted to pH 7.50, and containing penicillin and streptomycin. After 4 days of incubation at 18°C, antibiotics were renewed and after 6–7 days, cultures were ready for harvesting and preparation of microscopical slides. The cultures were a source of actively dividing cells and consistent metaphase spreads were obtained. Evidence from BrdU incorporation suggested that cells could undergo several rounds of replication. The chromsome spreads were good enough for karyotyping and to successfully silver stain the nucleolar organizer regions.     

Synthesis of sulfated glycosaminoglycans by the three cell types of the rabbit cornea in culture.

All 3 cell types of the cornea, the fibroblasts, the epithelial as well as the endothelial cells, synthesize GAG. The fractionation-patterns of the epithelial and endotherlial GAG are almost identical and differ clearly from the one of fibroblastic GAG.     

Quantitation of cutaneous blood circulation in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Zusammenfassung Die Durchblutung der Haut von Rhesus-Affen (Macaca mulatta) wurde mittels Verteilung radioaktiver Kügelchen gemessen und beträgt etwa 7% des HerzMinutenvolumens.     

Distribution of calcitonin cells in the thyroid glands of normal adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta.

The calcitonin cells of adult rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta are located in the central region of thyroid along the median axis. The anterior and posterior poles, the isthmus and peripheral regions of thyroid are completely devoid of C cells. The parathyroid also lacks C cells.     

Pre- and post-partum plasma amine oxidase differences in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Summary Plasma amine oxidase activity increased from 23.4 nmol/ml/h during pregnancy to 49.5 nmol/ml/h during an extended post partum period in 10 rhesus monkeys. Comparison with non-pregnant control monkeys sampled at similar times indicated that the significant differences were in the extended post partum period.We thank Dr.C. H. Conaway and Dr.J. D. Histamine-induced hypotension modified by H1 and H2 antagonists in the monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Summary Blocking H₂ receptors with burimamide in the dose used (20 mg/kg) approximately doubles the amount) of histamine needed to produced the same effect as seen when H₁ antagonists (chlorpheniramine or mepyramine) are used alone. TheK ₂ ratios for chlorpheniramine-chlorpheniramine plus burimamide are 117–204 and for mepyramine-mepyramine phus burimamide are 200–478. H₁ and H₂ receptors, in the monkey, when stimulated, both cause cardiovascular responses in the same direction.
